    I remember playing a protector aasimar Divine Soul sorcerer in Descent into Avernus, and it was fun. Her dad was supposed to be a solar, and I played her as basically a power-of-friendship kind of character that was super-sweet and nice in social situations. Her first reaction to seeing Lulu, the hollyphant? She immediately went "omg so cute" then asked it if she could give it a hug. She would also try to comfort any frightened NPCs the party ran into by also giving them comforting hugs.
    But when it was go time, she immediately went from sunshine-and-rainbows to smite-the-unclean, raining holy energy down on her foes. And when it came to dealing with evil legendary items/artifacts like the Shield of the Hidden Lord, she was like "nope, don't you DARE attune to that." So at least in my headcanon, Gargauth the pit fiend is now forever locked in a prison demiplane. Hell, if I had gotten to play her to the end, I would have had her offer up her soul to save the people of Elturel in hopes that Zariel could be redeemed by seeing her noble, selfless act before actually having to give it up.
    As for her spell list, it fit her personality - healing and radiant damage spells like Sacred Flame and Guiding Bolt, because radiant damage is best damage. Seriously, there is no monster in the core rulebooks that is outright immune to it...even celestials just have resistance!

    This looks similar to a class I used to play back in the day called Favored Soul. We modified it a bit to fit our campaign. We had an established world where we had brought down a deity in our previouse campaign (Epic Leveled characters from 3.5), and in our next one, my new character (at first unknowingly) got to grow into that position due to a celestial need to keep balance amongst the deities.

    In this period I'm playing a Drow Divine Soul Sorceress of Lolth, with Evil affinity, which tries to pass as a normal priestess of Lolth, and I have to say, it is a blast. I'm just a 5th level character (Metamagic Adept feat), but everything you can do make you feel... like somebody who really has power at their fingertips. You also left out the most important part: how cleric spells interact with metamagic. Extended Aid is so powerful, and Quickening a Bless in combat, take the disengage/dash action, and leave is amazing. When I Twinned a Cure light wounds to raise up from the dying condition both the fighter and the rogue I felt... powerful, and impactful. And when in the last encounter I Subtle Counterspelled a wizard spell (counterspell has only somatic component) and I started to ask him: "Man, what are you doing moving your hands in that way, throwing bat guano all around, and then all I can see is a tiny spark of fire that winks out? Did you study magic in a human academy? AHAHAHA", when I humiliated the enemy before defeating him.. I felt like a drow, and it felt amazing. Hands down one of the best subclasses of the best class in all D&D 5e.

      @@RichMerry we are all drows in the current campaign! We just made up an excuse not to mess up between us (no backstabbing, no stealing from the party and so on) and this campaign has become truly incredible.

    I played a Kitsune (homebrew) Divine Soul Sorcerer straight from Level 1-20. She was a lot of fun to play. Her Divine Origin was the homebrew world's equivalent of Tamamo-no-mae who brought down empires with her charm. She played into it with her personality by being flirtatious and charming wherever she went. She had lots of very handy healing spells (Cure Wounds, Healing Word, Heal, and Mass Heal at 9th Level). She of course loved using Fireball, Flamestrike, Magic Missile, Scorching Ray, and others. When she hit 14th Level her "Wings" manifested as her fox tail glowing and splitting into nine glowing tails while she lifts off Magneto style.

    Is there a way to play divine sorcerer just focusing on damage rather than healing

    • @joelalcazar8558
      @joelalcazar8558 Před 3 lety +2

      Absolutely. Especially if you take one level in death cleric at level two. Take inflict wounds for your divine magic spell, and toll the dead as one of your cantrips. The one level in death cleric gives you an ability called reaper, medium armor proficiency, and shield proficiency. Reaper let's you hit two targets with necromancy spells like toll the dead. Inflict wounds is less risky as a spell caster once you get better armor, and you can follow up the following round with toll the dead. At level four pick twinned and quickened for your meta magics. Now you can twin inflict wounds (hitting two people in front of you), the quicken toll the dead (hitting the same two people with 2 d12s each).
      I play this and do a lot of damage. My ac is 19 with my medium armor and shield. Plus I've managed to get a staff of protection which allows me to cast shield for 24 armor when needed. I rarely use any healing spells.
      Sorry for the long post.
      Edit: If allowed, Yuan-ti Pureblood makes a great racial choice for this build.
      Edit 2: Also remember, take offensive spells from your sorcerer, and spells with no dc from your cleric. You will be focusing on charisma since all but one level will be in sorcerer, so you want your spell dc to be charisma based, not wisdom based.

      Mechanically your not optimising your abilites but don't let that get in the way of some fun ideas. In the web series critical role I know one of the characters is a Cleric that doesn't heal unless there is a life or death situation, playing a divine sorcerer in a similar playstyle is possible.

    • @MrDarkir
      @MrDarkir Před 3 lety +3

      You absolutely can! Divine Soul Sorcerer's can have incredibly good damage per round while maximizing their action economy in ways that few other classes can.
      Start as an Infernal Legacy Tiefling, make sure you have 17-18 Cha and 14 Con (for the concentration saves). Now at level three you are going to take spiritual weapon, warding bond, and the twinned spell metamagic. Before combat or on the first turn twin warding bond on two of your front line allies (or don't twin it and only cast it on one you know is very very likely to get hit, I twin it in order to increase the chance that one of them will take damage that round and subsequent rounds outside my turn), then whenever they get hit use your reaction to cast Hellish Rebuke at second level for 3d10 damage (once per day). On your next turn you stay back, twin cast firebolt for 2d10 dmg (assuming you have more than one target), and then cast spiritual weapon for 1d8+CHA mod. Assuming that your CHA is 17 your average damage for that round will be 16.5 (hellish rebuke) + 11 (twinned firebolt) + 7.5 (spiritual weapon) for a total of 35 damage at level 3! Subsequent rounds you will cast hellish rebuke at only first level (11 dmg on average) and you will not have any more sorcery points for twinned firebolt (you will get more as you level up) so the average damage on subsequent rounds will be 23.5 damage which is still very very good at that level.
      Being a divine soul sorcerer lets you weaponize your action, bonus action, AND reaction almost every round in order to maximize your damage.

    • @joelalcazar8558
      @joelalcazar8558 Před 3 lety

      Yes, this is very nice too! And regardless of how you build it, I would always take spiritual weapon. It is a fantastic spell. I actually belive divine soul sorcerer is much better as a damage dealer than a healer. People see that it has access to cleric spells and automatically think it should be a healer, but that is not the most optimal way to go in my opinion.

    • @personman8734
      @personman8734 Před 2 lety +1

      I feel like no one is talking about some of the crazier elements you have access to a the divine sorcerer that only the divine sorcerer has like RAISE and CREATE UNDEAD which you can enhance with metamagic like extended spell to possibly double your zombies. You are officially the only sorcerer with access to proper necromancy on top of SUMMON CELESTIAL WHICH YOU CAN TWIN CAST. You are an absolute demon in combat that can rain down death. You’re a heaven imbued monster that strikes the fear of god into your enemies as they watch skeletons send volleys of arrows tearing them asunder.

  • @zourin8804
    @zourin8804 Před 2 lety +1

    Divine soul merely gives more options on an already tragically limited class. Revivify is a tough sacrifice to make for a spell you may only use once or twice through a whole campaign, while consuming one of your precious few slots. Aquiring scrolls of Revivify would be far, far more practical. Healing word is, in a nutshell, weaksauce except for yo-yo-ing partymembers in combat and begging the DM to either focus your poorly armored ass or executing the yo-yo so he doesn't get back up. You are better off upcasting CLW and taking advantage of your free metamagic option and making sure your ally STAYS on their feet.
    Sorcerers are blasters, so you want things you can blast with, such as Inflict wounds/guiding bolt, CLW, Aid (better than HW!). Spirit guardians vs fireball is a good argument to have. Don't fall into the trap of always taking Twinned metamagic on a sorcerer. Heightened is a powerful choice for a Divine Soul, forcing disadvantage on offensive saving throws, as well as Distant spell for landing touch spells at range. Pick up Metamagic feat at 4th for Subtle and Quickened, or the Healer feat if you're the party's only healer, which is superior in every way to Inspiring Leader and gives you more health-recovery power that isn't hinged on spell slots.
