Fat Birds Are Easy Prey: Fulmar Hunting in the Faroe Islands
Vložit
- čas přidán 16. 11. 2014
- In the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic, baby fulmar hunting is an annual August activity. The Faroese depend on seasonal hunting and fishing as a major part of their diet and lifestyle.
At the end of each summer, baby fulmar birds fall from their nests in the fjords, where they bob in the water because they are too fat to fly. During the week or so before they manage to lose weight and take off, the Faroese go out in boats to scoop them from the sea and eat them.
MUNCHIES went baby fulmar hunting with local Høgni Mohr, a writer by profession and a hunter in his spare time. He caught birds for his family and friends to last throughout the coming year. He showed us, via the fulmar feast, what it means to get a local meal in the Faroe Islands.

My grandparents taught us that those who do not participate in the "barbaric natural act of hunting" will not respect their food and therefore waste it. And it rings so true. I see people just wanting the good cuts of meat and they throw the rest in the bin. Hunting yourself teaches you the value of life and hopefully makes you respect that animal enough to use all of it. Puffin tastes better
My mum and I live near the coast in the capital (Greece). Since I was a kid to now in my 20s, we often go fishing on these rocks near the beach. During the winter she catches squid and cuttlefish in the night.
I swim there, so I help her to spot fish, avoid rocks, etc. I gather clams, urchins, and snails for us to use as bait.
I even caught an octopus once. It was an hour long battle of me lifting rocks and dragging it out of holes with a metal rod. We ate well that night.
We also had tomatoes and potatoes in our back yard. Best damn potatoes I've ever had.
We moved recently and we have a much smaller yard, but I think it's still doable.
Obviously we needed to buy food, but the fish save us some money. And we have a good time together! The veggies are just a nice bonus.
We also have lemon trees, and every year gather olives from the neighbourhood's olive trees. Big jugs, we brine them and gift some to friends, and family abroad. We keep a few. Same for the lemons.
Enjoy your life man. You are fortunate.

Any good hunter/fisherman respects the animal they kill. Just cuz we kill animals doesn’t mean we don’t respect the beauty of them n 9/10 us hunters care about the conservation of the animal we’re hunting. @The Emperor Protects my father do the same except we usually use knife.
@Mr. CU NT you don’t care about the animals your hunting stop making hunters look good because they clearly don’t give a fuck for example people who hunt rhinos aren’t doing it cause they are helping the environment they are doing it cause they want the horn which is worth more than gold and also some people are trophy hunting they will purposely kill rare animals cause they are more valuable if hunters cared about animals they are hunting these type of coincidence wouldn’t happen.

"It's not fun to kill them but if I don't eat them, I'll eat a chicken or a cow. What's the difference"? So much knowledge dropped on us in that one sentence.
The difference is that if you eat chicken or a cow, you're not harming wildlife, which is harmed already enough. Maybe it is sad, but domesticated animals are the key for holding so many people alive on this planet. If everyone has thouhgts like you, there would be no wildlife on this planet left.
@@jenicekfromlondon Maybe but most people are too pussy to go out and harvest their own meat, so they are ok with eating "domesticated" animals that have abysmal lives before being slaughtered. I'm pretty sure the wildlife is safe.

Star01984 Nature - not just something to be visited, but a home where people provide sustenance for themselves
The author of this article, Ford Elms, has written this story of the Faroe Islands please enjoy this little story. :)
In a tradition going back more than a thousand years, the Faroese renew their connectedness to their history, their culture, their communities, and the natural world around them. The pilot whales return to the Faroe Islands, and the people harvest this bounty from the sea. The Faroes are small islands in the middle of the cold North Atlantic. The growing season is short, the islands rocky, grudgingly yielding grass and a few of the more hardy vegetables. The people’s diet has traditionally relied heavily on meat and seafood, and the pilot whales are a welcome addition. It’s a natural thing, of course, something many in the 21st century don’t understand, while pretending they do.
At a time when many people have to call themselves “human animals” to remind themselves of their place as part of nature while never actually understanding what that means, the people of the Faroe Islands have known it from their earliest childhoods.
You can’t tell wild animals how to behave. The return of the whales is not predictable. Some years they don’t come at all. Few things remind you of your place in the natural world as when nature does not provide you with the food you depend on. So in this modern world of schedules and deadlines, those who can down tools and attend to what nature has dictated, and man’s artificiality falls before something far greater.
A pod of whales is sighted, and the call goes out. Grindaboð! People drop what they are doing and gather for the Grindaboð. You can’t tell a wild animal to wait until you get off work at the office. Families gather on the beach, some man boats to go out and slowly drive the pod onto the shore. Only certain beaches are used, they have to be long and shallow to allow the whales to be driven high out of the water. Kids, parents, grandparents all gather. The men begin the arduous and dirty task of killing the whales, dragging them high on the shore before dispatching them with a cut to the spinal cord. Blood fills the water, as it must.
In the almost subconscious way that traditions are passed on in traditional cultures around the world, the kids learn by watching. Often, it’s watching out of the corner of their eye, as they play around the beach, climbing on the dead whales, watching their elders, learning skills their people have known for centuries.
Because it’s no easy task to kill a whale properly. Do it wrong, and a majestic animal could lie for hours, dying slowly in agony. You have to make it quick, a job that gets harder as the blood gathers, the water is churned up by the thrashing of the whales, and fatigue starts to set in. Kids have to learn how to do it right before they take their place besides their elders. This is not play.
And the old men, their joints stiff and their reflexes dulled, stand back and watch, remembering the Grinds of their boyhoods, criticizing how the young ones aren't as good as they were in their day, or complimenting the skills of the more expert. And the old women share the news, and wink to each other at the younger girls eyeing the younger boys taking part for the first time, and the boys eyeing them back. And the old women remember when they were the ones doing the eyeing.
Then it’s over. The whales are butchered and the meat distributed in a complicated tradition as old as the Grindadráp itself. The blood clears from the cove and the communities go back to their houses. What they have done might not seem like much. Or it may seem to some a horrendous crime. Yet, what have they actually done?
They have taken part in something that binds them to their ancestors. They have provided sustenance for themselves. They have renewed their traditional connections to each other and the natural world around them, connections that their detractors in their self-righteous, bigoted ignorance cannot possibly understand, and so do not condescend to try. They have done this for themselves and for their children, children who, without really even being conscious of it, are learning who they are.
And for that they are derided by people who have no knowledge of who they are themselves, nor of what they are defaming, people who romanticize the natural world while spreading hatred of those who are more a part of that natural world than these self-righteous judges could ever hope to be. It takes a village? Well, these are the villages it takes.
Many of their detractors live in urban environments, their paved and synthetic lifestyles wreaking havoc on the natural world. This havoc extends to the Faroe Islands, where mercury is a worrisome part of the food chain. The Faroese leave a far smaller footprint on the global ecosystem. Yet those whose lifestyles contributed a lot of that mercury use its potential toxicity both as an argument against eating whale, and as a weapon to portray the Faroese as somehow mentally deficient and no better than brute beasts, all the while ignoring the ominous fact that the whales they claim to defend are being poisoned in their natural environment. As one Faroese man said, why is it acceptable for whales to be poisoned with mercury as long as no-one kills and eats them?
But the Grindaboð continues, fiercely defended by the Faroese as central to their culture. Who knows how long it will last. And if it is lost, will we have lost much? We will have lost something that, though it is not unique to the Faroe Islands, is in short supply. We will have lost a people whose lives were governed by rhythms as old as the planet, who understood the land and sea around them, and their place in it, and that they have as much right as the orca to eat the pilot whale, being no less natural than the orca.
Whether you think it a great loss depends, I guess, on what respect you have for human beings and human cultural diversity. I consider loss of a traditional culture to be an immeasurable tragedy, no less so than the loss of an animal species. We lose something of the human experience. These people live their lives knowing that nature is not something to be visited once in a while in an attempt to feel spiritual. It is their home.
How ironic then that people who live their lives worlds away from the source of their food, and who seem to consider the wilderness as a colossal petting zoo populated by furry four legged humans who can't talk, should preach to them about respect for nature.

Fish seeing the bird head: who’s eating who now sucker
As a 14 year old Faroe Islander, I don't understand why people say that we can't eat fish, pilot whales and fat birds. It has been our meals, everyday, for the past 200 years, so why stop now? We kill the animals so fast, that they're not in pain. The whales get a cut in the neck, and die right away. If you do it wrong and if the whale's in pain, you're no longer allowed to kill whales.
I'm not a big lover of fat bird, but I eat it if it's on the table. You eat what you get.
I spend a lot of time in the summer outside, helping my grandpa, my uncle and dad, with the sheeps and birds. it's just our way of living our lives.
The people don’t like you killing whales, they could care less about the birds an other animals. But the whales people really care about an they would like your people to stop killing them. As would I, we believe they are to intelligent to be stabbed in the neck.
U eat what u get it isnt right or wrong some ppl dosent have the luxury of going to the mall and buying food So deal with it

@@gregorydimaio3260 All animals are intelligent. Some are just more intelligent than others, but while Pilot whales probably are not dumb, their is no scientific research stating that pilot whales are abnormally intelligent. According to most so called "animal smart lists" they do not even feature among the top 100.
At the same time pigs are well documented to be among the most intelligent animals in this planet.
Yet they are deprived of any of their dignity and killed for money. Even in your own country..and mine
Maybe people should not lecture others when they are worse them selves
@@annikaniclasen9025 1. The whale meat isn't even good for you. It is way too high in Mercury and other heavy metals to be safe enough to consume. It's also frequently contaminated with DDT and PCB.
2. Being stabbed in the neck and bleeding out isn't that fast. And it's not necessarily the killing itself that does harm. It's the animals being corralled and separated and watching each other die. These whales have very tight social groups like humans. How would you feel having your relatives murdered in front of you?
I don't know how I got here, but I stayed for Mohr's narration. His outlook on life and food is something I don't get to see very often where I live. The look on his face and how much he appreciates every bird he catches, or potato he picks is just so genuine.

+Savvy Living off the land is the best way to live life I'm glad I grew up in a 3rd world country and in the countryside since we just lived off the land and fish for food, trapping animals for meat but nowadays certain laws have restricted some way of life. Also the thing with these type of living is there is always going to be that one greedy fucker who purposely hunt for the reason of selling which results to over hunting and driving the population down.
+Savvy animals were NOT "put on this earth for our survival". I have no problem with the food chain, the circle of life, but this is savage, cruel, unnecessary. and he smiles as he tears their heads off, slowly.

I ate these birds and I must say that they are delicious if well cooked. Greetings to Faroe People. I spent 13 months between you. If it wasn't for the weather and provincialism, I could live there permanently.
Hey that actually sounds really good, now I wanna try!
What an amazing life as hunter/gatherers they lead. So much to admire.

You know it's actually simple kind of life most people love. You live off from what nature provides you and most of all the food that they eat are natural no preservatives and so on.

I see nothing wrong here, no animal cruelty, and they are eating meat they hunted themselves, everyone in the develop countries should meet their diner first, half of us would not eat so much meat.
J. Colton Cox He snapped the neck first
yeah the animal did not live a miserable life in a cage and its death although gruesome was quick enough. Like Temple Grandin says: "give them a happy life and quick death, we owe them that much if we are to Slaughter them"
The bird got kicked out from the nest by its parents and got kill right after before it even had a chance to fly but every species has their way of staying alive, survival of the fittest.
J. Colton Cox the neck breaks in the first seconds of pulling and the bird doesnt feel anymore pain then dies only a couple more seconds later

It’s probably comforting to know the birds population is increasing and taking 50-200 birds does not affect their populations. It’s a sustainable food source.
Those too fat birds to fly that need to float for days are going to get eaten by large fish anyway. Harvesting them this way is best.
Sadly if a human does that to a cat then they get death threats.

No because before the heads gets ripped off the spine separates. So it's dead before the head come off. They do the same to rabbits
i dont think it makes them die instantly. it just separates spine and nervous system. i believe it takes afew seconds more for brain to use the blood till it stops. i've read that in some researchs it takes 20-30 seconds for humans and they were probably concious in that period. im not sure about the hearth tho maybe a doctor or veterinarian with knowledge can explain it better.
