Baxty fails to see the bigger picture blaming Lewis for the set-up error. This from the Daily Telegraph who explains it well:
"The decision-making process on Hamilton’s side of the garage has to be questioned. He took responsibility for the decision, but you would expect any radical set-up changes to be made after consultation with a larger group. This includes the key engineers with perhaps even Wolff involved, especially if there is an element of risk to it."
So, the real question should be why are the engineers and other consulted persons allowing these changes? Why are they not forseeing the problems with the changes? Baxty is being too simplistic just blaming Lewis. It's a larger problem.

Because engineering/setting up an F1 car is an extremely difficult task that teams often get wrong, especially when their star driver appears to think he knows better than his engineers at times. I'm by no means a Lewis hater, I think he's objectively one of the best drivers in the history of the sport. However, I get the strong impression that he thinks he knows more about the technical aspects of car set up/design than he really does. To be clear by no means am I trying to imply that he doesn't know anything about these things.
As an engineer that did FSAE and knows engineers in F1 (not at Mercades) this is a common "problem" with some drivers. They think that doing X will cause Y based on their experience with one car, when in reality that's just not the case for complicated reasons that often arent intuative or obvious.
Nico said on one of his YT videos years ago, that one of the few advantages he had over Lewis was his technical understanding of car set up and the fact that he was able to play with things like differential settings and braking bias on specific corners more than Lewis did. By most accounts Lewis is much more of a "feel" driver than a "technical" one and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I just think the frustration of not having a top tier car is really getting to him and I personally don't think he's necessarily handled it well at times.

@@specialK319319 I don't buy the Nico Rosberg better tech knowledge speil. I recall Malaysia 2014--where Merc had to produce a massive dossier on Hamilton's techniques to help a struggling Rosberg. And from what i recall, it was often Rosberg who couldn't work out what engine settings to use and /or was in the wrong setting, such as Spain 2016.
The whole point of my post was to point out that there are other people involved in choosing a particular set-up. It's not solely on Lewis as Baxty seems to intimate. It's more complex than 1 person making all the decisions.

It the biggest issue is that they are trying to use sci fi solutions like they did in days gone by when the regulations are fundamentally old school engineering and philosophy of aero. I’m not saying it’s gotten simpler but it’s mastering the fundamentals of the suspension that has crippled them!

Toto has been doing his job well which is pleasing the shareholders (including himself). He joined a team on the rise at the point where they were about to dominate via engine reg changes. Keeping it together prior to the cost cap was easy, he's now done the same as most business CEOs and stripped costs (got rid of expensive human capital) to increase profits. The race team is now very profitable so the board is happy, but now the brain drain means Merc is a shell of it's prior self. Losing performance and losing Hamilton is now a PR nightmare. Bringing in Verstappen would be a desperate attempt to stick a huge plaster over a gaping wound and to distract from the brand performing poorly. Merc unironically need Horner to replace Toto. He's the only person qualified to rebuild a previously Championship winning team back to title contention. I don't think that the Merc board have the appetite for that though. I can see them bowing out of F1, selling to the highest bidder after 2026 when Audi come in and outperform them.

The problem for Toto and Lewis is that they have had it so easy during their winning streak and not having needed to fight for their wins, that now they are both lost in terms of what needs to be done. They can’t do the same things that they were doing when they were winning easy, but those are the principles on which their victories were created and so they keep coming back to those principles. Where they are now, they need a complete change of mindset. For Redbull, their success now is driven by all those years of pain from the losing years. I’ll be very surprised if Mercedes get this right without getting an Adrian Newey from RB or getting info on intellectual property of their rivals.

And Verstappen did beat Saiz, a topdriver, he did beat Ricciardo (who did beat 4 times world champion Vettel). He did beat all his opponements. He started at the age of 18 in the Red Bull and did win his first Grand Prix in the Red Bull. Since his age of 18 and driving for Red Bull (for 9 years now) he won each year at least 1 Grand Prix. Even when Red Bull ended third or second in the constructors championchip. When Mercedes ended third or second (2022, 2023) in the constructors championchip Hamilton did not 1 Grand Prix. Just facts.
