I just looked up Austin's 5 mind sets. This is absolutely some of the best advice you will ever get. 90 percent or more of the people will try to stand in your way to success. Just because they never had the gumption to step out on a limb. They would love to see you fail just because they did. Several people tried to stop me from going off to auto/diesel school. But I would not trade the experience for any thing. The book,"Success Through A Positive Mental Attitude" was recomended to me my junior year in high school. It perty much is the same as Austin's "5 Mind Sets". There is nothing like having a madeup mind and to know where you are going. TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH IN YOUR SELF AND GO PLACES!!!!!

A bit pricy but the teachers don’t excel in the bookworm portion, they excel in welding. Having a instructor at my hip telling me how to establish a good puddle to form a great bead is such a good confidence booster and experience. As of now we’re working on fluxcore welding and I wasn’t confident in my overhead, but having the teach there to provide different techniques is why they do what they do! Would totally recommend

Austin I agree with the work ethic. I can't tell you number of folks who have told me they can't get folks to show up on time or at all. As to schooling, from my perspective, they give you the opportunity to put a large number of hours under the hood on a wide variety of rigs you may or may not have seen or used. I am a hobby woodworker and I look at welding as another option on how to join materials to fabricate something. I agree with hood time however, fundamentals are extremely valuable.
As to what interests me most I would say in order laser welding (yes cutting edge), tig/mig.

Hi Austin. Have been working as an electrician for over 15 years. Just love your videos.
You have the best attitude towards life, just because the school has ended your learning of new things shouldn't stop.
This past week for me I learned how an gantry crane works because I had to service one and reverse some of the controls, I love my work because I really don’t know what new potential fun stuff that is ahead.
I also love to work with people with much greater age of my own (35) just because of what I could learn from them with all the experience that they have.
But now with my experience that I have now I have coworkers younger then me that are asking me for advice, and that feels great!
    Keep up the great videos!
    Greetings from Gothenburg Sweden!

Austin..... I love you channel and especially some of the places and conditions that you weld in. I am 69 now and cannot get into a lot of those places.... or get out of them. In fact, a few years ago, I started to specialize in making Aluminum Products for ground support of the Aircraft Industry. I have been a Commercial Pilot and am an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer with over 40 years of experience. I now for the last 12 years have my own company to make various Tools, Equipment, and Support gear for Aircraft. I learned to weld from my Grandfather and still have his old machine. He did Atomic Hydrogen for Boyles Brothers Diamond Drilling in Vancouver B.C. I have several Miller Machines, MM252, MM350 Aluminum, Passport Plus, and my favourite machine being TIG welding with the Dynasty 280 DX with wireless remote and a 310 Amp Crafter Series Water Cooled Torch. I specialize in Aluminum for many reasons. It is clean, light, easy to cut and machine, and a joy to TIG weld with the right machines and techniques. Pulsed Wire Feed with an Alumipro Push-Pull Gun for large pieces. You are absolutely correct...... practice and time makes the best teacher. I now prefer welding Aluminum to most other metals. Also..... TIG is the bomb for fine intricate work. I regularly use it to remove broken exhaust studs from Aircraft Engine Cylinders. TIG is my preferred "TOOL" for many repairs. Stay well and keep up the good work. Also I love the "Character Interviews", as there are many interesting people and stories out there that should be told.

Exclent advice. However I am an advocate of going to school. I attended auto/diesel school right out of high school, later at the age of 32 I went to aviation school. You are never to old to learn. I realize this video is now four years old, and I have been following Austin for quite a while now, but just came across this video.
In growing up from the 6th grade through high school I worked with dad in his fabrication shop, so I have been exposed to a lot of types of welding. I have never worked as a welder. I can say if you get the wright school you will learn principles and fundamentals that will give you an edge. You may not necessarily have to have certificates to hire on a particular job, but keep in mind you will most likley have to pass a welding test before qualifying for the job. So each time, and the more certifications you can get is more better and more experience. I know first hand schools are expensive but like Austin says it is an investment in yourself. The school dont have to be in your back door, I can personally tell you that moving away from home for school makes you a better person. I highly recommend it. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO TAKE OUT A SCHOOL LOAN AND MOVE AWAY FROM HOME. JUST BE SURE YOU HAVE A SOLID MADEUP MIND THAT THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. THERE IS NOTHING, NOTHING LIKE A MADEUP MIND.

I suggest going to school first(start pay $5+ higher)then working at a shipyard that does Naval contracts since all welders new & old are trained - As an electrician the school certified me as a structural welder to use 6010, 7018 and 309 on flat, vertical & overhead & to attach pipe. The first weld an instructor held on to my hand (flat) then two days later vertical he held on again & the second week overhead - the metal was steel 3/16 x 2 x 6" - tacked into a T which we broke in to see how even the fillet weld was. 4 weeks 8 hrs a day - next was heating & burning school then steel pipe /w mirror. Nuclear welders learned wire TIG & MIG .w/ X-ray checking.

Thanks Austin, Welding is a great career . I am not in pipeline but love to watch your videos and others that you areaware of probebly met at KWI As cool as Pipeline is it most certainly is not for most Its good for a few and those few may not even stay at it for more than 10 15 years. Therfore I think its important for that 18 year old to know there are good jobs and pay in the pipe trades both in and out of the U.A. (union). Single hand not on pipeline welding Pipe making some darn good money and even pipefitting with out welding making over 100k a year is common. Some travel and some guys never travel. Personaly I wouldnt delve into a job knowing I would never be home If I was a family man But I have traveled to support my family but didnt plan it that way and didnt raise a family all the while traveling. To each thier own. on the other hand you can buy a house and work half the time and be home a lot and still have money left over if you are smart about it . As a single guy , Id be all in but when your young things change fast from single and being a family

You will strike an arc and learn how to put a tig root in a pipe on your first day of class. There’s no learning on plate then moving to pipe, they have helpers that work for the school and all they do is bevel and prep coupons. Once you get the basics down they have all the simulators you want. Convection box, boiler wall, scaffolding to practice.

As far as being a welder I think it’s a great career path. The neat thing about welding is it is so diverse. There are soo many industries that require welding. Pipe welding at that. I talk a lot about being diverse as far as learning different welding processes. I use my own situation for example, I have been doing all types of mobile rig welding since my last pipeline job. We are now working on a 50x100 metal building. So as long as a guy is willing to learn and diversify his welding skills it is a great career path.

    Thats what im saying!!!!!
Im currently taking a continuing education mig class at my local college (because they dont offer stick). And im also taking the stick class in the next county over. BUT ITS STILL NOT ENOUGH!!! I asked both schools if i could get some booth time so i can practice some beads. The mig class didnt allow it, but the stick class did! 😃
So i can get a bit of time on my non school days to free-weld on my own.
If stick machines were a bit cheaper id buy one and keep it at home.

What do you think about Tulsa welding school? Classes are 7 months long with 4 days in the shop and 1 day in the class. Goes through everything. Mig,tig, stick, welding pipe, structural and going over left and right handed situations. Only bad thing is it’s very pricey. And when I got into the field I had to relearn stuff they didn’t teach us.. they gave us the chance to learn and the test in the branch weld, 6gr all that good stuff. I recommend that anyone that’s looking into going to school figure out what you want to do first and stick with it so you don’t waste time and money like half the guys I went to school with did.
