Sky, Space, Art and Imagination: My Response to the

This video is my entry for the #SkyIsTheLimitArtChallenge organised by Dena Tolefson @DenaTollefson. Dena organises art challenges among members of the art community on CZcams, which I really enjoy and appreciate. The goal of this specific challenge is to create a painting that features sky.
I paint an astronaut in video. The main reason why I selected this figure is because it gives me freedom to paint what I imagine. The image I selected was black and white, and that gives me freedom to apply colours I want to the figure. Being a learner who started painting regularly about eights months ago, it takes some effort to draw objects that you usually don't select. So I tried a sketch on my sketchbook. Then I drew a similar figure on watercolour paper. You can see the full painting process in this video.
I'm using basic colours for this painting. For watercolour work, I use a basic Winsor and Newton Cotman student paint set with twelve colours. For the background I'm using a HIMI gouache set with eighteen colours. However, I use a very few number of colours. I encourage using a limited palette as it helps you to draw paintings that are not too busy. You also get to learn how to mix colours if you use a limited colour palette.
The steps I use here are quite basic. I use an initial wash to highlight the shades in the figure. Second, I paint the background. This is where I really use freedom. The space beyond atmosphere can be imagined in many ways, and I chose space because that allows me to interpret the sky the way I want. I use dark pigments/tones using gouache to give the feeling of dark space. I do use blue colour. However, I use a bit of purple to add energy. The space/background does not have shapes (as you would paint clouds). I wanted to indicate that space has no limit and we can imagine what it is like. So I use random brushstrokes and splatter to bring in business to the background.

Wow, I love your spacey painting for this art challenge, I have done a spacey one too for this challenge.. I love your vibrant colors and the composition.. And I found your narrative of what inspired you for this painting very interesting.. and I enjoyed watching your technique creating space, and the astronaut.. I don't think you overdid the background at all, it's beautiful! ☺👍
