      Only people who should upgrade every year are tech reviewers, content creators/influencer, software/hardware engineers needing them for their job, or those getting it for free in their phone plan (can downgrade and pay less??)

    • @AndroidAuthority
      @AndroidAuthority  Před měsícem +8

      It's difficult to make an apples-to-apples comparison because there's no version of the Pixel 8 Pro with a Snapdragon processor. However, multiple people on the Android Authority staff use the Pixel 8 Pro as their daily driver, and all of us think the battery life is either good or great. In other words, battery life shouldn't be a concern with the Pixel 8 Pro!
      If you're talking about performance though, well...let's just say Snapdragon is going to win every fight against Tensor G3! 🫠

  • @ArthurZakaryan23
    @ArthurZakaryan23 Před měsícem +3

    While I still find it hard to recommend a Pixel, even the best Pixel yet which I fully believe the 8 Pro is, it is closest I have gotten to safely recommending one with less caveats than ever before.
    For day to day use, personally it is the closest iPhone like "it just works" experience you're going to get on Android. I know a S24 series Galaxy owner can argue this also and they would be valid to do so but I prefer the unique Pixel experience above any other Android brand which has practical features I use daily and I feel like don't get enough credit/recognition when considering a Pixel over any other Android phone.
    Things like the AoD which for me is easily the best on the market. All pertinent info I value most is available to me at all times with a single glance. If I have a active timer going, that timer is always there at a single glance. These might seem like small or more obscure/less common examples but it's these small details you grow to use and rely on when you use a phone as your daily driver for months and learn about all the little nuances that can easily be overlooked in initial reviews.

    Actually, I find it much easier to make the back gesture on a slightly-curved display than a totally flat one, especially Pixel's, since the metal edge of the frame is at the same level with the glass. Also, curved looks more futuristic. Don't forget that flat displays are way older than the curved ones. Also...iphone as an example ? Really ?

    One aspect you didn't touch is battery life. I bought a pixel 8 pro in December 2023. I am very happy about the battery, but I have to confess, I use the pixel 8 pro all the time in battery saver mode. If I feel I need more power, I disable the battery saver mode, but I rarely see the need to turn off the battery saver mode.
    I'm using accubattery pro and I have to say that my battery heath increased from 100% to now 104%. I can easily go through the day on a single charge. I have so far NEVER had to charge more in a single day. Compared to my old mi 9T pro, it is just twice as good.
    I was very worried about the battery life, but it seems that the battery life is not an issue.
    This is my honest review about the battery life. I have no affiliation with google. I actually wanted to buy another phone, but I ended buying the pixel 8 pro as I was in an emergency situation when my 9T pro screen just died.

    • @Mark..01
      @Mark..01 Před měsícem

      My experience was the opposite. My 3 year old Pixel 5 had better battery life than the new 8 Pro.
      Standby battery drain is terrible on it, loses 2% per hour overnight on WiFi and more when on mobile data.
      Camera usage drains it very fast also, but I guess that's with most phones. 3 hours of shooting photos and battery was dead!
      Overall I found I got me through a day, but only just. Screen on time rarely made it to 5 hours.
      The only bright spot, it seems to be very good with CZcams, an hour or more of CZcams videos and it doesn't lose much battery.

    Swapped my 8 pro after 4 months to a galaxy s24 ultra. Miss the camera and the face log in for banking apps. Camera was like 2 generations ahead of what I have in the Samsung which sucks. However I don't regret the swap. S24 ultra is the better phone especially in performance. The pixel isn't slow but the snapdragon runs rings around it. Especially notice it when you're juggling a few apps at a time where the tensor just seems to take a beat to think about what it's doing.

  • @anakinskyguy6582

    Had the 7 pro and although I loved that thing the tensor was just a headache, a lot of optimization issues, heating issues, battery life issues and signal issues, ended up selling it and going with the s24 ultra, I'm not getting another pixel until google figures out how to make a proper SoC

    • @Mark..01
      @Mark..01 Před měsícem +3

      My 3 year old Pixel 5 (Qualcomm chipset) still had better battery life than the Pixel 8 Pro.
      Tensor is bad, do anything remotely intensive, like updating a bunch of apps or downloading a few large files and it heats up and chews battery.
      I think it's convenient that Google launches their phones at the end of the year, going into the North American winter, so these issues are less noticeable.
      Having just gone through an Australian summer with the Pixel 8 Pro, it seriously heats up. Using Google maps with Android auto, phone screen off and out of the sun and the phone is ridiculously hot!

    • @anakinskyguy6582
      @anakinskyguy6582 Před měsícem +1

      @Mark..01 Yup, the moment you do something slightly heavy like a gaming session or record a video in 4K for 10 minutes, they heat up like crazy, especially in hot weather as you mentioned. There's just something about the Pixel experience that feels so intuitive and enjoyable to use everyday. I have an 8 pro , I can't say I've been overly happy with the face ID or the finger print sensor, face id is not bad in good light , in poor lighting conditions it's not great and I'm darkness it just doesn't work full stop where as an iPhones face ID works very well in day time and in pitch dark.
    The finger print sensor on my unit up until some weeks ago absolutely sucked and only worked when it wanted to , however in recent weeks the hit rate seems to have improved somewhat ( was there an update for the FPS ? )
    The camera is decent most of the time, it probably has a very slight edge over my iPhone 14 pro max occasionally, I have my pro max set to take 48 mpg shots every time .
    Surprisingly, night shots or poor lighting situations not using night mode , my iPhone utterly kills the pixel .
    You watch the iPhone taking a shot in poor light and you can see the sensor in steps adjust the white balance, and it does a good job , the 8 pro not so much.
    General navigating around the 8 pro it seems pretty snappy most of the time. There are time when doing heavy lifting you can see it taking it's good time to complete a task.
    I just did 5 MB update, and OMG , it took so long 😂.

    I have Pixel 8 Pro since the launch, and it works great, love the camera, though in heavy tasks (games) it tends to get warm/hot. So overall its a GOOD smartphone, but not excellent, so I will wait till 2025 to see if Google (Pixel 10 ??) will switch to Snapdragon chips, but until then I don't wish to upgrade.

    • @AndroidAuthority
      @AndroidAuthority  Před měsícem +2

      We agree with most of what you say here, but you should abandon hope of a Snapdragon Pixel anytime soon. Google is all-in on making its own chips, so the Qualcomm days are gone and likely never coming back.

      @@AndroidAuthority Well it is sad, at least rumors say they are switching to use TSMC chip maker in 2025, so hopefully it will help eliminate heating issues of Samsung Exynos platform (Tensor G3, G4)... so waiting to se what will be Tensor G5 like... will decide then between Pixel and Galaxy phones =)... as for Pixel 8Pro, it will be quite viable to last another 2-3 more years without being too outdated.

      @ArtixBlader Před měsícem

      @@AndroidAuthoritycompletely agree that Pixel will continue to use "tensor" CPUs for some time to come. Why would they pay high amounts for TSMC when it works just fine for the average user, and clearly they have a great business deals with Samsung who is the raw manufacturer of the chip and the display for the pixel 8 pro?

    • @AssassinIsAfk
      @AssassinIsAfk Před měsícem

      Well they are not gonna switch to snapdragon chips instead what they are going to do is most probably make their own chips like what Samsung do or what apple do but with TMC which apple and Snapdragon use to make their chips. I expect them to be on par with the previous snapdragon chips maybe the current ones at that time but it's unknown what they will do with their own chipsets.

    Got the P8P at launch and ditched it as soon as the S24 series came out. Tensor just doesn't get it done, the fingerprint sensor is so bad they didn't even cover it during this video, and the face unlock only worked in ideal lighting conditions. Then you add the constant delayed updates that always break something. As much as I'm a Pixel fan, Google just can't get it together. Pixels have had issues since the P1, and nothing has changed 8 years later.

    I’ve recently bought a Pixel 8 Pro coming from 20 years of Apple and I have mixed feelings about it. The phone lacks of functionality outside the USA which makes the experience less appalling. Google customer support is also appalling, and possibly the worst of the worst, leaving customers with ongoing unresolved issues, and useless devices. I like the camera system and the AI features, as well as the battery life, but in terms of usability, compared to my old iPhone 14 Pro, it lags even on basic tasks such as launching an app or editing a picture. I was expecting more from the processor and I wasn’t expecting the main features to be geographically locked to the USA. I mean, it’s annoying paying for a phone that has Gemini and automatically screens calls in the USA, but doesn’t do any such thing if you live somewhere else.

    With that being said, my s23u was miles better. Battery life on pixel is bad, it gets toasty, it gets overwhelmed (im a power user) and overall it's not great. That being said the cameras are fantastic and so is the display. Software support is also good.
    Depends how much you buy it for but it might be worth it if you get it for cheap.
    I wouldnt pay 1k for it. That would be silly. S24u would be so much better to buy.

    All of these comments about not getting all of the latest features for seven years is ridiculous and how could anyone expect that. Of course new phones will have new features otherwise they would sell a new one every seven years 🙄. That said though, with Android many new features are delivered via application updates so I suspect if on current OS the experience may be better than expected.

    Got a Pixel, wanted to make a switch from an IPhone 13 Pro. At the first glance it was incredibly good, but 1 week was enough to understand that it’s not even better than 2-years old iPhone.
    Tensor is really bad. Cellular worse than on the IPhone.
    Battery life.. poor. It lasts almost same as 13 pro with 2-years old battery.
    Biometrics are not even close to the Face ID. Face unlock on a pixel works only when it is bright outside and from a short distance. Fingerprint is optical, and while it works well, when it is dark outside you will be blinded by a flash of this freaking fingerprint. Why can’t Google put the same sensor as Samsung does? Come on Google, this is not a budget phone (yes I know it is cheaper, but look at Chinese phones).
    Camera.. sometimes it is brilliant, but sometimes you just wonder WTF have you just captured. It is unstable and this is a bad thing, especially when you try to take a photo of kids (toddlers). Portrait mode is also not so great.
    And the biggest issue for me is PWM. I literally couldn’t use it without strain on my eyes and headaches. I tried so many OLED phones and this is the first case for me.
    I am actually very disappointed. I wanted to try Pixel and I thought it is the best Android phone, the only one that can be considered for switching from IOS.
