Once again the C series model in the LG OLED line-up offers excellent all-round performance with a good mix of features, picture quality and gaming credentials. The C3 continues what has gone before and the upgrade from the 2022 C2 model is not huge, but then why fix something that wasn’t really broken? There is slightly more brightness on offer thanks to the Alpha 9 AI Processor 4K Gen6 chip and the latest OLED panel, which when combined together are classed as OLED Evo, plus, like last year, the video processing is now some of the best on the market for upscaling, detail, smooth gradation and motion. But, if you don’t need the slight increase in brightness, the slightly better processing or the newly designed WebOS and quick menu, you could pick up the 2022 65-inch C2 which is almost identical performance-wise for close to £1200 less (in May 2023). We have no doubt that the C3 pricing will also follow the same course over a year that the C2 has, so the choice, as they say, is yours.
    The good
👍 Excellent accuracy out of the box in Filmmaker Mode
👍 Superb 3D LUT calibration capabilities & AutoCal
👍 Superb video processing from the a9 Gen6 AI processor
👍 Very good just above black performance in SDR and HDR
    👍 Excellent 24fps & 50Hz motion
    👍 Upscaling is superb
    👍 Superb HDR accuracy
    👍 Dolby Vision / HDR10 / HLG / DV IQ
    👍 Improved panel uniformity
👍 Dolby Atmos & DTS support
👍 Superb gaming features and four HDMI 2.1 (48Gbps) ports
    👍 WebOS 23
    👍 Excellent design and materials
👍 WOW Orchestra integration with optional USC9S soundbar and subwoofer
    The not so good
    👎 No HDR10+/HDR10+ Adaptive
👎 WebOS 23 top third advertising space is not welcome and is a waste of screen real estate
👎 No backlight on the remote
👎 Sound quality is only serviceable via built-in speakers
👎 Expensive at the time of launch (£200 more expensive vs. C2 launch)

I would avoid the C2 because of the pink tinting issues with the panel.
You will have to calibrate the panel to get rid of it or find an alternative D65 white point.

The reference monitor tells a different story about the Samsung S90C. QD-OLED is just closer to the reference than LG's WRGB OLEDs. Or does reference monitor now also favor Samsung?

My LG C1 is such a beast. There are 2 things i hate about it : The lack of space to put a soundbar under the tv and the ridiculous build in power cord with no option to replace it or to extend it ( easily).
Sometimes i feel that the bigger the brand, the more stupid decisions are taken.

      I got a CS which is a C1/C2 hybrid.
The stand is horrible, I have mine on a trolley stand which allows me to hide the cable, put a sound bar underneath and also be able to freely move around a 65 inch fragile OLED by myself when needed.
Stands are not to everyone's taste, but in my case, perfect solution.

No they are some like 9.1.2 (VIRTUAL), in comparison to 7.1.2. And very importantly dts audio playback and passthrough which the LG c2 lacks which is very very very annoying 😡. I wish the c3 was out when I got my c2, I was one month early to release. DTS audio support is annoying I have to plug hdmi into soundbar and lose VRR and 4k 120hz because soundbar would never support that signal. I hope LG sends update to older oleds for dts passthrough AT LEAST. Playback can be absent I don't care. I know dts is a dying format but loads of blu rays use it and Disney plus use it so it's annoying.

Great review Phil. I look at it this way. I have the excellent C1 that I have owned since March of last year and there is nothing that has came out that has made me want to upgrade. Not the higher brightness nor the new Fad QD-OLED. So I plan on rolling with my C1 for a few years then I will see where the tech is at. That being said. I used your C1 settings when I first got my C1 and havent changed them since.

Think I got a fair deal ... 400 bucks more than the C-1, 400 less than the C-3. You got a GREAT Deal ! Hold on to it! I hope to get 10yrs out of the C-2.

“The difference between the C2/C3 and the S95B isn’t as night and day as many influences would have you believe”….facts, and shots fired 🔥 I love you honesty, and objective analysis.
I’ve been saying this ever since last year, when I had experienced both sets for myself, and spent a good amount of time learning them. Prior to that, I was losing sleep over deciding between the two, for nearly two weeks. I still haven’t caught up on sleep 😅
However, once I experienced them both, my mind was made up rather quickly, and I kept the C2 over the S95B, despite many claiming the gap is just so astronomically HUGE between the two sets. It was not as mind blowing to me, clearly. And don’t get me wrong, I love QDO, especially for its higher color volume/gamut, better SPD, etc. There’s also thing I do not like, too. To me tho, the Samsungs implementation of QDO was rather poor, especially all the FW update fiasco’s….despite the panel being technically superior on paper. In real world content, especially when aiming for accuracy, it’s not that large of a gap at all, as content is still being graded/client referenced on WRGB’s. And tbh, even when going for punch/brightness preferred type of mode, the C2 imo gets plenty bright and punchy….way beyond the creative intent.
I mean look at it this way…the S95B outperforms the HX310 when it comes to color luminance, and BT2020 gamut coverage. So how exactly can we truly benefit from QDO, if the grading monitors being used, can’t even reproduce the color of QDO. I’m not saying there’s no benefits…there definitely is…but in 99.5% of content, the wider gamut, is rarely utilized, as the technology is still catching up to the standards. (Can’t tell you how many people I’ve spoken too, that think HDR has no standards). 🤣
The processing just isn’t the best on the S95B, compared to the C2, especially low-bitrate/highly compressed content.
Samsung has definitely made some nice improvements this year tho, with the S95C. Tho, I’m still not sold on a Samsung QDO, as I’m a purist type, and my idea of a good image, differs from what Samsung thinks is a good image.

Cheers, i am thorn atm between C2 and S90C, and problem all said S90C will get second gen panel at end of year or next year after it sold out first batch of units with gen 1 panel. Are u happy with brightness on ur C2?

    • @ye-rochawkins5432
      @ye-rochawkins5432 Před rokem +6

PS…I’ve noticed this trend with certain influencers shooting TV’s deceptively, purposely, in order to make one look significantly dimmer than the other. The good ole meter the camera down trick….and who knows what else.
The representation they often show, is such a misrepresentation of what our eye’s actually, see in real life, that it steers people completely wrong…imo. They will show a TV that looks like it’s barely on, while I’m over here squinting at my C2, not even maxed out in SDR…and I’ve owned some of the brightest QLEDs on the market, so I know what high peak brightness/APL brings to the table. I’ve experienced every technology on the market, other than Dual Cell….tmk. Oh and not to mention, this iPhone I’m typing this on, is well over 1,100 nits, and can get very bright full field. Yet, my C2 here nearly perceptually matching it in majority of real world content, regardless of the standard I’m watching…doesn’t matter if it’s DoVi, HDR10, SDR, etc. It’s actually kinda crazy tbh, how similar this iPhone and C2 look…with such a discrepancies in luminance and the difference in technology. I guess that goes to show, standard work, and are there for a reason. It also shows I’ve probably done a good job calibrating my C2, tho with proper settings, they were very close OOTB. Samsung seems like they could care less about Standards imo, as they’ve gone against the grain of creative intent, since they’ve probably been making displays. It’s nice to see them learning tho, and cater to kore purist types.
Anyways, Obviously there is a decent difference in luminance when you have a full image of solid colors, due to ABL
being more aggressive….but even then, it’s not like omg, this C2 is just unwatchable bc it’s so dim. I’ve never felt that way….again coming from someone who’s owned some very bright QLEDs.
I also, have noticed that these creators also like a 600 nit or higher SDR experience, with a lower gamma than reference, 99% of the time. So there’s this misconception (at least in my eyes), that a LG OLED NEEDS to have peak brightness enabled in SDR game mode…which is ridiculous imho, as the standard is not created for such luminance levels. I actually wish LG would just allow it to be enabled, to close the mouth of said creators, misleading people, as they would no longer have that said talking point. If they wanna burn their retinas out, and go far beyond the standards…while simultaneously ruining their vision of what HDR actually is….and more and likely potentially ruin their panel, then I say go for it. More power to ya. My eyes don’t need such high luminance in SDR tho.
It’s honestly a bit upsetting to me, as some who understand the standards in place, and how their supposed to be replicated. It bothers me that so many people out there are so willing and eager to mislead people, in order to line their pockets.

    • @ye-rochawkins5432
      @ye-rochawkins5432 Před rokem +3

@@Markzy_DM So yeah, I’m pretty sure you are absolutely correct about the S90C, at least from what I’ve been hearing…they have told certain people that the later build S90C will be using the newer more efficient blue OLED stack. Which is probably a good thing, as a buddy of mine has had two S95B’s burn in on him, in under a year. Samsung just got done putting a new panel in his S95B literally today, and I’m curious if they’ve replaced it with the new panel/OLED stack, or the first Gen. Hopefully we can find out. I’m hoping he got some paperwork with a part number for the panel lol.
I’ve heard that the new QDO panels went from 4 blue OLED layers, to two now…with the newer stack being more efficient. Idk if reducing the layers was smart, considering the issues people are now starting to see with their 1 year old QDO’s. I’m just speculating, but this was probably a cost saving measure. It doesn’t leave me with much confidence at the moment tho. I warned people about first Gen tech last year, which was another thing that swayed my purchase. If the car industry has taught me anything…it’s that you DO NOT buy first Gen technology, unless you’re prepared for issues to arise. LG’s had 10 years to master WRGB and BI/IR.
To answer your question about the brightness of the C2…it’s plenty bright for me. Never has it ever seemed dim to me…quite the contrary. For perspective, I came from a CX, and before that, I had sets like the Q8FN, and PQX, TCL 6 series. All bright QLEDs. The CX was my first OLED, and it did kinda let me down a bit, and didn’t always flatter me. But I’m almost positive I got a bad panel on my CX. So I had this expectations to return my C2 before I even got it. I truly did. I was full bore ready for QDO. However, the C2 just won me over, especially once I started comparing it to the S95B. Not everyone has the same opinion tho. There’s many in my camp tho, that kept a C2, and returned thr S95B.
Anyways, the improvements LG made in such a short amount of time, we’re very apparent to me. Especially in the processing department. Every gripe I had with the CX was addressed with the C2. It truly impressed me, and still impresses me to this day.
In all reality tho, it’s going to depend on who you are, and what you like and value in an image. If you’re used to watching content outside of the standards, and could care less, then you might want to look outside of LG. But just hear me out, and understand that you’re deviating from what the content was originally supposed to look like, and that will come with side effects of it’s own. There’s always a give and take here. For instance, if you wanna watch HDR overbrightened…just know that you will be introducing posterization into the image, which will produce a visual artifact. It’s why PQ EOTF is a absolute STANDARD. Also, if you want a eye searing 600+ nit SDR gaming experience, LG is not going to be for you. Again, you have trade off, no matter what. So if you’re a person that just wants punch, and to hell with accuracy, at the cost of detail and creative intent, than you should probably go with the S90C. Like I said, it’s really going to depend on who you are, and what you like. There’s a right way, and a wrong way…and there’s also preferences. Sorry for that long explanation.
You might wanna also read my other comment I made in this thread. You really need to be careful to not fall into the hype train these influencers often conduct. There seems to be a real incentive to mislead people these days. There’s many objective reviewers out there, but there’s also people pretending to be experts too, that truly don’t understand display tech, standards, etc. They give a more subjective viewpoint, vs an objective one. That’s how I see it at least. It’s a good thing you’ve ended up
here tho, and are watching and learning from a reputable and objective company, that has basically echoed many of the same sentiments…for instance, if I reviewed TV’s for a living, my review would include many of the same talking points/sentiments as a video like this. I’d give an objective take based on evaluating the set, per the standards. However, if you go to a person that’s just started reviewing TV’s around…say the C19 time frame, we would more and likely disagree on a great deal of things. Then again, they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder..right?
My eyes are blue, so one might call me “sensitive to light”…I often ponder if this is why some need such high levels of luminance, vs what I feel I need. It seems like there’s a trend I’m noticing…being most of these people have brown eyes, and wear glasses/contacts. Probably just a coincidence tho 😅
And don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love high peak brightness and high APL, but only when it’s called for. HDR is FAR, FAR more than just brightness alone, which has lead to entirely too many misconceptions about the purpose of the standard. I mean, I can often get headaches from watching bright HDR content, on what many would claim, “is a dim TV”. Remember, HDR is more about dynamic range, giving you far more stops of dynamic range vs SDR, than brightness alone.

I don’t have any OLED tv, planning to get one, I’ve seen c2, g2 in person and honestly I didn’t notice the difference, but I also have seen in person c3 and g3 and I can tell you that g3 is brighter when you have white images on the screen, because in dark images g3 just give you a bit more detail. I wish I could get g3 55 but it’s too expensive I think I’ll go with the c3 because I don’t have the c1 or c2, if you have those ones, I think you can keep them, maybe next year, MLA tech will be in C line panels.

  • @mistajericho

ATTENTION! Nothing wrong with buying an older model, but if you are interested in buying the C2 keep in mind that this version still has the well known problem of the faulty auto dimming (TPC)! This means that under certain circumstances (dark scenes with not much movement going on like in game of thrones) the TV dims the display until you can barely see anything at all. If you research this problem on the internet you'll see that quite a few people are annoyed by this. You can switch the feature off in the service menu, but be aware that you might invalidate your warranty by doing so. The C3 originally also had this problem but it was fixed by an official update. In my opinion the faulty auto dimming is still a major difference between the two models, because as of now it is very much unclear, whether the C2 will also receive the update fixing this problem.

  • @semigene
    @semigene Před rokem +2

This C3 is clearly using an MLA panel. The viewing angle improvement shows this, impossible without SEMLA, because the color shift in C2 and earlier was caused by the additional height of the stacks of OLED emitters causing light to scatter unevenly at angle.

webOS and the magic remote suck in comparison with google tv, android tv and Sony premium remotes. That being said it is not a deal breaker for the extra cost you have to face in order to get an equivalent Sony TV. However, a TV is something that hopefully you are not going to replace in 5 years time, so if you are going to use it a lot for gaming and/or watching movies and TV on a daily basis and you like the SONY save some money a get a Sony TV if you can.
I am still thinking about it as I am planning to get either the LG C3 55 or the Sony A90K 48 on Black Friday. I can't wait to be honest, I am done with my old 2019 PHILIPS led TV.

Looking to upgrade my 10 year old Sony soon for my first OLED. Thinking 55 inch again maybe the G2. The G3 price is a bit steep, or do I try C3. Never seen a 3 up close yet but looked at a c2/g2 in the same shop and definitely preferred the g2. Or do I wait until Xmas or January to see if the drop price again?

  • @Deltax5

Plenty on above budget TV's. probably around a grand as well.
They only upgrade every year anyways.
I got the c1. It's alright. Missed the 3d glasses era. Why they take it out. How am i suppose to watch aviator now.
I got it for gaming. Does the job.
720p needs to be worked on in a update for all lg TV's. most part it's good. Color tint i noticed using windows. To see what TV i have. ARG. why that way. Maybe a color dot off screen somewhere.
4k gaming for the ps5 and computer.
got the 48" because of room and i managed to raise the funds. I don't think i could afford a bigger size oled. I could get a way bigger tv for the price of the oled and maybe upgrade it later on in the years.
    Whatever.
Lots of settings to tinker with.

Fun fact…as I too was concerned about the new WebOS coming from a CX, to a C2…but you can disable all ads on the Home Screen of a LG with the new WebOS. It’s very simple, and makes operations so much faster on the TV, and doesn’t clutter up the Home Screen. I thought I was going to miss the old WebOS, but tbh, I dig the newer version better. The OS is just so much faster than it was on my CX, and it just has more polish. Easier to read, settings are laid out in a more practical manner, etc.
The only thing that’s questionable, is taking you to the Home Screen when summoning the home button, rather than popping up in the traditional blade style. Not a huge deal at all tho, as chances are, if you’re going back and hitting home, you’re switching the content, 99% of the time. Hate is a very strong word…and I think your opinion is probably based off non personal experiences, and more off what others say…

S90C and S95B are essentially the same TV using the same panel and processor. The S95C is the TV with the latest 2023 QD OLED panel, so using the S95B - as we own one - was easy to do and is relevant as it is essentially the same TV as the S90C and in the same class as the C3. I should have made it clearer in the video that we are waiting on the S95C retail units.

Could you tell if it's possible to adjust the white balance with multipoint (10 point or 22 point) precision in the Game Optimizer image mode and with input set to PC / Chroma 4:4:4 Passthrough option enabled, by any chance? I know that Game Optimizer mode allows for a 2 point adjustment, but that feels inadequate to me taking into account the extent of inaccuracies in that mode, especially with it's EOTF tracking.
Or is it possible to do a hardware calibration for that image mode via CalMan' calibration suite for LG? Does that bypass the image processing limitations imposed by that mode?
