Stockfish plays brilliant moves according to Stockfish.
The craziest thing about this game is that all of Mamedyarov's moves were among the top engine recommendations. He didn't make a bad move until the very end, at which point he was already losing and was desperately just trying to create some chaos. He played all good moves, and lost.
Truly insane game
This is a great example of the difference between people and engines, really. He played an amazing line that was better for him, but REQUIRED precise play the whole way through. We use up our energy and time as we play while engines don't, so even if the line in Stockfish says it's winning it's just SO MUCH HARDER for a human to do it. This is the type of stuff you need to keep in mind when picking which openings and prep to learn, how easy the position is to play is such a hard thing to grade but it's just so important
He had two slight inaccuracies according to Svidler on the live broadcast. Not taking anything away from either player ofc.
h6 was an inaccuracy and Be6 wasn’t the best move according to the engine. f6 was the decisive mistake though.
@@hawkmore Exactly! I learned this lesson the hard way. Not long ago I played a game as black and I had a completely winning position, but I lost because I needed to find a hard move to give mate in 13.
From the interview with Carlsen on norwegian television, right after the game, he did predict the rook sacrifice. Said it was «His (Mamedyarov) style»

Those last 13 moves of Magnus were just incredible. Those were the only moves which maintain his winning position and many of them were by NO means easy to see, very very difficult in fact. This guy is a monster.

Yeah. If your opponent plays b3 against you in that position, he's either cheating or Magnus Carlsen. I'm sure there's other GMs that could find it, but I don't think anyone on the broadcasts did without glancing at the engine.

I would resing as soon as he moves any pawn, just to avoid checkmate. Thats what superGMs do, never let their opponents to checkmate them, so im something of a superGM my self
All these games make so much sense to me when Gotham explains them, but then I start my own game, I blunder a rook in 10 moves.

Actually Kasparov's era was more longer. Magnus has to go more way to compete that..He was totally unbeatable then. Even he was unstoppable for sometime after the end of that golden run.
@@Masua90 Well the US vs USSR rivalry were greatly important especially within the two superpowers(granted it did certainly make it into the cultural awareness abroad, yet to a substantially lesser degree), but its quite clear that you are seeing it through an American-centric perspective, where one underplay the cultural significance this has had for Chess in Norway for instance.

Yeah except it's also much more accessible. You couldn't keep up with the games as they were happening in past eras. You didn't have video recaps and live streams by a half dozen content creators either. You didn't have the ability to watch Kasparov and his buddies getting drunk and listening to Eminem while playing blitz or bullet. This is truly the golden age of chess from a spectator's perspective

Watching the whole day unfold live, was an absolute treat. Naroditsky explained it all to us laymen as it unfolded, and with 4 decisive, exciting games, Magnus and Anish in 1st and 2nd, this was maybe the best tour day so far.

One thing you should have mentioned is how much time Magnus had on the clock, he played all the top engine moves with little thought. The man is too powerful
Most impressive thing was that he must have been out of prep before he started playing perfect move after perfect move since it was from move 18 and onwards or so

I'm sure that every one will remember Arjun's name in a few years; that guy is playing incredible chess. We have some very talented juniors, feels great to see them rise up the ranks.
I reckon Magnus started studying the Catalan extensively after Alpha Zero used it as its preferred opening. In your video a few months back on Alpha Zero v Stockfish you mentioned sometime that that opening was what it went for most of the time and it didn't find any significant advantage with 1. e4. And then, after another few weeks you released a video on what Magnus learned from Alpha Zero and I believe this is one of the things he learned from it.
Also Dubov likes the catalan and im pretty sure he inspired and helped w all this catalan prep we see from magnus
This is completely irrelevant but I'm a firm believer than AlphaZero is trash. And so are all these neural network engines. Google was using some fancy custom made TPUs. Right now, if you're an average guy, run Leela on your average GPU and it'll be trash. Competitions just use great GPUs and hype up all of them. The problem is that there's no comparison CPU x = GPU y. There can never be a fair match up.
Basically, I believe that even in 2018, if you ran Stockfish in a good enough computer, it'd be better.

The Catalan is going to become so trendy definitely, like the Sveshnikov which Magnus used extensively in 2018 against Caruana in the WCC and many other opponents.
Magnus is absolutely a monster. To be able to see all those ‘only’ moves that maintain his winning position.
Magnus is BEASTING this tournament. Loving watching his matches. It's extremely difficult for him to get to 2900, but I think he's going to do it. Best chess in history being played.
Queenless attacking games that aren't just "endgamey" and about winning pawns and promoting are so fascinating to me. It requires so much piece coordination and understanding positions where it doesn't seem to matter what you play because there are no obvious threats or captures or checkmating ideas.
I was following live the game and Magnus played top engine move after top engine move. He pummeled Mamedyarov is 27 moves! Crazy !
And Mamedyarov never even played a bad move until the very end when he was already losing.
Magnus was going to win anyway, mamed just avoid a +120 moves lose game

That Fabiano Caruana game was amazing tbh. It’s good to see him come back in vicious style after hanging a rook in an earlier game. Plus, it shows that the French is viable for black and can even be played for a win at the highest level despite the bad rep it gets.

Magnus and his Catalan
38:25 I'm pretty sure Magnus has played the Catalan before (I don't remember if it was only in faster time controls, but I think he has played it in classical before).
Magnus threw some shade at Giri in the postgame interview with Norwegian TV, saying "I am impressed with his will to win. If he is willing to take the forfeit instead of giving Dubov a game on the rest day, and to score that point for free, he must really want the victory."
He clarified that it was his understanding that Dubov was willing to play on the rest day, but Giri refused, and thus won the game when Dubov didn't play. People, including Karjakin, were giving the organisers shit for the way it went down, but it seems the option was indeed given to the players!
It shouldnt be the players choice its on the organizers to have this prepared with clear guidelines giri did nthn wrong. Also im pretty sure magnus was kidding he tweeted “😉
Yea honestly I feel the same sure anish in second place but even if he would win this people would question because he took the forfait, he should have just played dubov on the rest day escpecially since it was a corona situation. @@mohammadalmasri7578 Agreed, they should have put clear terms for when the game would be played in case of positive cases in a player's camp. Anish was perfectly in his right to take the forfeit, of course. Magnus was giving a post-game interview, Anish walked behind him and gave the V-sign to the camera, so I think Magnus just felt encouraged to troll him a bit in return. I don't doubt that Magnus would have played on the rest day, that seems to be his attitude to these things, but then again, he has less to lose than most of the other players.

Bottom line dubov couldve played the match but forfeited, anish was waiting for him at the board.
I can even understand dubov that he doesnt want to play with a mask on. It's fine...but giri isnt obligated at all to play him outside the schedule. Thats silly.

37:16 Daniel King's PowerPlayChess channel mentions that the idea of Ne1 is not to play Nd3, but it's Nc2. Nc2 puts pressure on d5 after Ne3 in some lines, and otherwise frees the queen from duty of protecting d4. Nd3 is played because f7 shakes things up.
Needs to be said, the fact that he says "Ladies and gentlemen" at the start of every video even though his audience is overwhelmingly male is pretty cool

I work full time in the restaurant industry and when I am not doing that I work on my music but I wanted to say thanks for turning me onto chess. I don't play enough to ever become great but it's become a great hobby for those moments I just want to relax or if I am on a bus, great way to pass the time in those moments. Levy speaks the truth about the Tenderloin District in SF. As someone who works there, it can get dicey in an instant. Still some nice people who live there, but it is a rough place to be.
@gothamchess What is your production setup like? Your voice sounds clear despite you moving around a decent amount when talking. Is a lot cleaned up in post?
You should do a series where you have to play from a losing position. You can title it "Creating Counter-play" or something. In the low elo games you can just hang a piece for free, and then later maybe a piece for a pawn, then maybe a rook for a knight or bishop. and in the high elo games maybe just get into a bad position but one that still has life in it. You could just make custom games and start the game from the losing position. Anyway I just think it would be pretty informative and it plainly sounds like good content.
(I've commented this 26 times and I'll continue to do so until either Levy responds, or I see the series. Or maybe I'll give up who knows?)
