- We're taking you with us as we pick up two bottle baby calves, purchase all the necessary supplies, visit the vet, and get them settled in! The little guy was a surprise addition to the day, and he gave us a scare the first night!
Let me just say, that my first choice is always to keep a baby animal with its mother. But there are many reasons that babies end up needing to be bottle fed. They can lose their mom. Some mom's reject their babies and won't care for them. Larger farms with many animals sometimes bottle feed all their babies to prevent any potential spread of disease that travels through milk. It also makes for very friendly cows. Dairies separate their calves because they are using the milk.
On our farm, whenever possible, we will keep babies with their moms. But we love giving a home to a bottle baby when the opportunity arises! This is our first time bottle feeding a calf!
Supplies You Need
Make sure the calf has had COLOSTRUM(it will not survive without it)
There are Colostrum replacement products out there, but nothing is as good as the real thing!
MILK REPLACER(if you can't get whole milk, straight from a cow)- I will NOT be purchasing the one in this video again, so I this link is for a different option. I have not had much luck finding an organic milk replacer, so I may just try using whole milk(I'll keep you updated)

I just love your family and you are just so adorable. I just love your voice and you can tell that little twin which they often don’t do too well from when I’ve read over the years but I think if that little guy is going to make it, he’ll make it under your care good job we’re getting our first bottle calf in a few days. Yours is my favorite video so far.
We always wiped baby animals with a paper towel, sometimes even damp with warm water. Great way to stimulate to poop. It works for most baby animals.

Think about giving your calf electrolights, with milk for the down calf, you can find recipes on the internet of buy packets. Basically sugar added makes them really liven up!! Also be ready for scours and have pills for those on hand!!! Best of luck!!

beautiful 4 or 5 days age calf purchasing & bottle feeding # but why U R castrating young calf ???? good colostrum bottle feeding but colostrum must be fed within 12 hours of birth to provide antibodies to calf otherwise after 12 hours it loses its antibodies action #

very late reply but storebought milk doesn't have the same nutrients that milk replacer or raw milk have. They also have preservatives that calves shouldn't be having

Just to add to the person who's already kindly answered your question here, whilst it's certainly true that store bought whole milk is not suitable for feeding really young calves at all, you can get away with occasionally giving it to slightly older ones.
To be really honest with you, even with the really tiny amount of experience I personally have with bottle calves, you can even give unsweetened 'home made' flavoured store bought whole milk as a 'very occasionally' feed to slightly older calves, provided they are in all round good health.
However, as the first person to answer your question stated, best practice is to avoid offering store bought whole milk to calves period.

Little dairy bull calves grow into dairy bulls. Dairy bulls will be happy to kill you. You want to stay alive long enough to have these guys in your freezer, so it is necessary to turn them into steers at a very young age to make sure you live longer than they do.
