  • IVs are a hit or miss - and today I tried to do everything I could think of to make its placement easy. When you're going in for ostomy related dehydration, it can make it harder for an intravenous catheter to be inserted. Even though it seems counterintuitive, I continue to drink electrolytes prior to ensure I am as hydrated as possible!

Hi, I'm Maggie and I have Crohn's disease. I am thrilled to be here sharing my personal experiences with Inflammatory Bowel Disease as well as living with an ostomy. I'm proud to share a little bit from a clinical experience as well, having worked as a GI pediatric nurse and ostomy telehealth nurse. I am so glad you are here. ♄ #ostomy #ibd #chronicillness

No GI I’ve talked to in my seven year battle with Chrons ever brought up fluids. I had to find out on my own. I’m so glad you’re talking about electrolytes because they make a huge difference in quality of life.

I’m so happy to be part of a Community Paramedic program in my area. We have a robust program working with a hospital physician group that has us do IV fluids in the field. We can draw labs before if need be or a VN before our visit does it. Patients are so damn happy to stay home. In the future maybe it’ll be an option for you. And btw as a patient who has had multiple iron infusions in an infusion center I’ve decided that some of the nurses are NOT super good at IV’s because most people have ports. ER nurses and techs are pretty awesome. Many infusions centers, radiology centers and infusions centers are now starting to hire medics because when you’ve learned to start an IV in bad light on a combative patient while bumping down the street it makes most lines not so terrible. I see this as a blessing, I’m not trying to boast! Thank god I come from that background.

You getting out of your sweatshirt reminded me of when I was at the clinic for my colostomy a few weeks ago. I was in the process of changing into the gown. With all the commotion going on with nurses coming in to ask question and get the IV into my arm and everything, I forgot to take off a few things. So about 45 minutes later, I was having the nurse to help me out of them and get tangled up in them. LoL

I want to “Thank You”, your all I have to help me understand my newish Ileostomy & what’s happening, what to do, what’s normal & what isn’t
. Even just changing my bag quite often I have to watch 1 of your bag change videos over & over just to feel comfortable to do mine & not shaking & scared if doing it. Now I have my mom & newish stepdad in my life, but my mom doesn’t want to see it or talk about it, let alone help me in anyway??? I’m a mom & I would have wanted to know everything about it & help my daughter through it & know how to change it myself, if she had something like this. Especially if she was permanently disabled & medically homebound like me for the last 19 years, but other that some groceries and some laundry ( now that for the 1st time in 12 years I have NO CAREGIVER 6-8 hrs a day, ever since my surgery
..) when I always did have one they didn’t do that stuff for me, because “ I have a caregiver for that” or at least that’s what my mom would say
” I’m not young, but it’s still so difficult all by myself & since mine was a Emergency more extreme surgery I didn’t get to know much. And due to my disease/ disability I was in the hospital 10 days and couldn’t even talk to anyone due to the pain for 5-6 days. So I had a in home Ostomy nurse every 2-3 days for 2 months, but since they were just nurses who new the basics of changing a bag they didn’t teach me anything than that & I’m still scared to do it myself
I have a lot of liquid more that anything all day & can usually only change it between 6-8-10 pm with a tired disabled body.. so your videos help me soooooo very much & I Thank God I found you hunđŸ€â€ïžâŒâ€ïžâŁïž So thanks for ALL you share & tell people, your my support groupđŸ€âŁïžđŸ˜‰âŁïžđŸ€šđŸ˜” kind of pathetic I know, but yahhhhđŸ˜‡âŁïžâŁïžâŁïžâŁïžâŁïž

Great news on the weight gain :D, such a hard thing to keep weight on.
I have such a hard time drinking enough during the day, I try and force myself to drink a couple Gatorades and bottles of water daily, just never seems to be enough. Always low key dehydrated. My output (Ileostomy) is always basically pure liquid, no matter what I eat to try and thicken it up. But right now the GI is more concerned with my low iron, B and D levels - and my PSC (Liver disease) issues - that the hydration issues are low on his list of priorities.

Just wondering if you'd be more comfortable having the fluids sent to your house, especially with your RN license. I'm in Arizona and insurance has no problem doing mine that way. They send fluid and IV supplies, and even an IV pole if you need it. Take care.

Question đŸ™‹â€â™€ïž please: does the Berry flavored Nuun dissolve clear? I am wondering because I have a colonoscopy in a week & I ordered them for before & after, to feel better. I can still use after if not, but was hoping they don’t color the water (as you know well
no orange, red, or purples lol) this will be my 14th colonoscopy 😜 ulcerative colitis 👎
But doing good 👍 (hopefully no surprises found during my scope) my doctor calls mine sneaky 😂
Because a mass was found that turned out NOT cancer (yay!) but an angry mass of active colitis that no one had seen before, took it before her colleagues and a older GI doctor had seen it once in a Crohn’s patient who had Crohn’s of the colon. So then I went through all the diagnostic’s for Crohn’s. I still don’t think they know for sure, so back to the label of UC đŸ€·â€â™€ïžđŸ˜

Ports require surgery and have their own complications and care. I don't want one at this time but it's definitely a great option for many!
