  • FRIDGE REORGANIZATION TIME! A clean refrigerator = a clean lifestyle. I have been wanting to cook more food at home and meal prep, but without an organized fridge, it's been difficult to achieve that goal. So it was time to declutter, organize and start cleaning out my fridge! Time for a KITCHEN ORGANIZATION! At the end of the deep clean, I give you a fridge tour and show you what's in my fridge!
By working with @horderly (my favorite personal organization team), I learned how to clean your fridge, how to organize your kitchen, and how to simplify your space. I picked up a ton of home organizing and spring cleaning tips for an overall organized and clean kitchen.
I totally overhauled my refrigerator and made it as sustainable as possible (HELLO Package Free glass jars!), while also making it highly functional for me and my wellness lifestyle.
You'll notice we don't have any meat in the fridge. While Michael and I do eat meat, we just prefer not to cook it ourselves at home, so we typically purchase our meat already cooked from high-quality restaurants and grocers. That's why this fridge contains mostly fruits & veggies! đŸŒ¶ đŸŒœ đŸ„’ 🍆 đŸ„• đŸ„” đŸ„— 🍠 🍅

Just a note, if you unnecessarily moving things from plastic to glass, for example yoghurt you’re actually using more water. You will have to clean out two containers instead of the one.

This is true. But also, with time, wouldn't the chemicals in the plastic container seep into the food that is inside it? Or would that take a longer period of time to happen?

Interesting to watch but not sure how practical this is. You still need to set time aside to maintain this level of organization specially if you're someone who cooks a lot, unless the goal is to simply make it aesthetically pleasing and you don't cook as much. • @wmf831
    @wmf831 Pƙed 4 lety +27

Holy mackerel. This fridge is a whole room! Pre-cutting everything sounds nice, but that way everything also spoils a lot faster. I gave up on doing this.
Did I hear that right? You buy pre-peeled garlic? In plastic boxes? To then put it in a glas jar. Garlic comes naturally with a skin that dries off, it doesn't need to be packaged at all! Certainly it doesn't need to be refrigerated , you just pull off as much as you need and the rest can still sit outside the fridge. Mind-blowing, right? Especially when you talk about sustinability! Chocolate in the fridge? But "why" I ask? It looses all its taste!
Where is the cheese, or cold cuts or similar? You don't eat that and therefore you don't have it?
Quick tip: NEVER put anything together with apples. They let everything ripen (and therefore spoil) a lot faster. They emit ethylen, which can also alter the taste of other things, for example carrots. Chia seeds and flax seeds should not be stored in the fridge, they should be stored cool and dry (but not in a fridge).
I agree, however, very much with cleaning your fridge regulary and buying foods without packaging!

Hey! I absolutely love your videos and this was so helpful! But I saw you had a biodegradable produce spray and I thought you’d want to know this eye-opening piece I read. Apparently biodegradable doesn’t mean environmentally friendly! It actually just means that product is able to break down, but usually with toxic chemicals and plastics😬 The word I now look for in my products is compostable - breaks down in plant-based materials. Hope you found this helpful!

Lucie I’ve adored your videos for so long, and seriously admire your efforts to be more eco-friendly through zero waste, meal prep, etc. However, this video missed the spot in several places. Especially with the getting rid of plastic containers (or even NONE plastic containers, like the pickles), just to put the food in something else. If you know you’re going to be transferring it as soon as you get home, you could try a little harder to find alternatives.... if it’s really impossible, i get it. But I’d be lying if I said that seeing you transfer all those food sand create unnecessary waste didn’t hurt a bit

In choosing to put things in pretty glass, you are also creating more dishes to do, which wastes water. Like your plastic soy sauce bottle is not going to get too moldy to wash out later, just keep it. I dont get the purpose of having an aesthetic fridge, other than the views.

You can preserve peeled garlic cloves for much longer by filling the jar with vinegar. I thought this would pickle the garlic, but so long as I rinse the vinegar off before using a clove, I don't get any pickle-ness, just great garlic. I've also read that you can soak the cloves in a jar of vinegar for at least two days, and then drain the vinegar and add olive oil. The couple of days in vinegar preserves the garlic and staves off bacteria, and then the olive oil is preservative enough after that.

Thanks for mentioning your kitchen organization video: I'll have to check that out because I'm trying to find storage containers that actually fit in my cabinets! Lots of cute options are simply too tall or wide for the cabinets, and while storing on the counter seems aesthetically pleasing, it's not practical for me if I want to form the habit of cleaning my counters.
This video was really interesting; I feel encouraged to at least peel my garlic and dice onions to have them prepped. Would love to see how much y'all keep up with this system maybe in 4-5 months!
I know you did a spring cleaning video a while ago, but it would be cool to see what kind of cleaning habits/routines you have to keep your space tidy and clean in a consistent way. Everyone loves an inspiring declutter session (including me!), but then weeks go by, and I find the dust bunnies forming allies with tumbleweeds of hair.
What habits do you have that keep that normal level of "clean" before it gets to a point of "well, I better set aside 2.5 days to clean everything"?

@@luciebfink that's kind of missing her point. I think the one thing that irks a lot of people with this video is because most of the time showing off a " plastic free" life style is quickly being seen more and more of a fad , and being shared as something that's more lux and well.. Instagram satisfying for a younger and smaller household instead of something that would not so easily obtained for families who don't have the ability or means to afford such things in a realistic matter.
(( for example: take the all over price of everything you bought from the orignal food bought , to the glass containers and etc (( which is probably for 2 people)) and then times that by 2 for the average house hold of 4))
Wanting to reduce your plastic isn necessarily a bad idea , but there is the matter of addressing that sometimes people are hijacking something noble into a luxary to obtain. (( ie look at the price of a " eco friendly water bottle vs a one time plastic one you can pick up for half the price ) .
Instead of quickly plugging a video with a quirky emote, why not consider making a video addressing those kind of issues , and if not being able to replace your plastic items , how about exploring the idea of reusing your old plastic until it has to be tossed and following that with how to properly recycle it?
      Reduce. Reuse . And Recycle.
Also, if you are going to make alot of your videos about being plastic free , I would really try stressing how the issue is our overuse , abuse and misuse of plastic is what the bigger issue is. Not just the evils of plastic itself.
For example, the man who created the plastic bag originally created it to be a reusable , so we wouldn't have to cut down so many trees to keep up with the demand for paper or clear thousands of acres of forest to make way for land fo grow cotton crops. It's the idea of SINGLE USE that's the issue.

I really want to get into 'meal prepping' in the same way you have done here Lucy.
My main concern is how long pre-cut veg and pre-cooked grains will last in the fridge?

Eggs almond lettuce and garlic all usually come in non-plastic packaging. youre looking at a shelf in a grocery store making the conscious choice to buy the one in plastic. its so saddening when it's so easy to change. some things cant be bought not in plastic but those can. and I get that you want to have things prechopped, my mom is a chef and feels the same way, but cleaning and chopping lettuce and leaving it in a salad spinner is very easy and you should try it.

Damn this fridge is beautiful! Honestly I do get where some of the criticisms in the comments come from, but I did still admire your intentions, and if this is what works for you, then power to ya! The germaphobe in me would have an anxiety attack whenever I opened a fridge of pre-cut veggies, because I know they spoil faster and I'm lazy so I'll forget them. BUUUTTTT, I will say for anyone who sees this, if you do want to start storing stuff in reusable containers (either Tupperware or glass), then start by a) reusing jars from things you buy and b) buying secondhand containers and jars from thrift stores! It's a lot cheaper, and you're recycling.

My Almond Milk comes in a thick plastic carafe shape. I don't like my food in plastic, so I transfer it to a glass jar, wash the plastic one, and use it to store things in my craft room or workshop. They all match and look so cute in the craft room. I only use the milk for coffee, so I only have one every week or two. Try to reuse plastic before recycle because it can only be recycled once and takes a lot of energy and large footprint to recycle it into a usable product.

Also a more sustainable tip i saw from other people, instead of using stickers for labeling the jars, use chalk-paper stickers or glass markers

Oh my gosh guys!! She is still in the process of being sustainable! It won’t happen all in one day. It’s not her fault that some items at the store come in plastic. Y’all are starting to sound like those vegan people who feel so entitled to correct and undermine anyone who is in the process of becoming vegan. Everyone is human. We all give and find new ways that work for us meanwhile trying to make the planet better. Don’t attack someone and mask it as “constructive criticism.” Be kind and give examples if you don’t agree with a method she used. Don’t just complain without giving a solution!!
