Both I guess, if you watch the beginning of the movie where Lucy and the others are captured by the space villain, it shifts to the real world where the boy exclaims to his sister about a time travel plot.
All the foreshadowing for this movie: 1)in Emmet's vision after everyone is kidnapped, Finn said he was working on a story with time travel and mind blowing twists 2) Rex and Emmet look ALOT alike, 'cos come on, just look at these two 3) They're both voiced by Chris Pratt 4) Rex knows alot about Emmet 5) half the time Rex is talking he talks about the past, present and future 6)the other half is talking about how alike he and Emmet are 7)When Emmet first sees Rex's ship hes says 'ahhhhhh enemy ship!' 8) Emmet literally says about rex when Lucy sees him, 'oh thank gosh hes real, I was so worried he was just a projection of what my ego needs deep down!'
My guess is rex wanted to turn emmet into a new rex and send him back in time to make it one continues loop of rex coming back in time. Emmet flying into space. Almost crash. Rex saves the day. The whole armageddon thing. Turn emmet into rex. And then time travel to the past to complete the new loop and stay in the time line.

Well time travel aside. Symbolically speaking Emmet and Rex are both sides of Finn (the human boy). Emmet is the positive attitude who is trying to accept his sister as a playmate while Rex is his side who wants to destroy that what has taken Finns belongings (Emmets friends etc.)
Nah I think they're representations of finn during different times in his life, finn in the first movie was maybe 9/10? And in this one, judging by how old bianca is, is probably 13/14, this is the age all pre tweens usually get interested in acting older than their age, and that's reflected in apocalypseburg where everything is dark and gritty, also rex seems like a collection of everything that a tweenager would find mature and cool
It’s amazing to see that Rex’s time-traveling spaceship was made from the DeLorean Time Machine, the time traveling phone booth, the TARDIS, H.G. Wells’ time machine, the time displacement equipment, and the Hot Tub Time Machine. He could’ve used more (I know there are no lego sets for these, so I’m just pretending): the time machine from the other two time machine films of the same name and from time after time, the WABAC machine from Mr. Peabody and Sherman, the time specter and timeship from teenage mutant ninja turtles 2012 series and the third live action movie, and the time stone and quantum tunnel from marvel.
This scene is exactly like Lightyear. Zurg turned out to be an older version of Buzz from another dimension timeline. And Rex turned out to be a future version of Emmet, from another dimension.
That means Rex is an Emmet minifigure that got lost and the kid bought a new Emmet figure then found out that the original one was there the whole time ....so he decides to customize it and call him Rex ..........why did I just realize that🤨😶
Huh. Basically, Rex would have won in the end if he never actually went into the past. He already hated his "friends" for forgetting about him, and he already had a working spaceship with a crew. Why he needed Emmet, is what i don't know. By changing the past he prevented his own "creation". So, it's like signing a death sentence, dude. Why? He had everything in his hands to do... whatever he wanted to do. If nothing else, (and if he doesn't really cares about the paradoxes) he could have took an Emmet that already changed into Rex. That is, if he was truly desperate for some company. And actually, ... that way is even better. Like, by saving himself from under that washer he only proved to other himself that only he cared about himself and thus no one will ever save him, except for himself. Also, another idea... Let's say, Rex went into the past,... but he didn't save himself, thus not preventing his change of heart. Instead he goes through everything he would have gone with his past self like in the movie,... but he does it all alone and like in the movie - wins. He interrupts the wedding, destroys the big cake thing, everyone is sad and down, like he was, and Rex is out there... i don't know, celebrating? By not meeting himself he creates a loop hole, that it doesn't matter what happens next - Emmet WILL become Rex and unleash Armamageddon (Or how do they say it in the movie).
First in The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Rex turned out to be a future version of Emmet. Then, in Abominable, Dr. Zara turned out to be an evil version of Merida. Then, in Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers, Sweet Pete turned out to be an evil version of Peter Pan. Then, in Lightyear, Zurg turned out to be an old version of Buzz. Now, in Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, Chelsea turned out to be an evil version of Ariel.
Emmet is not alone in having trouble getting his head around this. When I think about time travel too much, I end up creating time paradoxes and getting further from the answers to any of my questions.
I can buy that Chris Pratt voices both Emmet AND Rex in this film and the fact that Rex's backstory tells us that he is a future version of Emmet kind of fits with the narrative to be honest. But I clearly thought that despite that both characters are voiced by the same actor, there was no connection between the two, until I first saw a clip on Watchmojo where Rex DID start out as Emmet.
It’s not that they abandoned him they didn’t actually know emmet was in the dryer of the under system. It maybe possible that they said “hold up where’s emmet, I don’t know, we can’t find him nowhere I hope he’s ok.”
That was a real time machine out of nothing but plastic and Rex even says during the battle with Emmet at the end of the film that the both of them aren’t even real. So let’s spell this out. An entity that isn’t real, gained the will power to move in the REAL WORLD, and then built a REAL FUNCTIONAL TIME MACHINE out of nothing but plastic pieces. Rex is a god. Straight up. And Emmet learned how to do the same things Rex did in this film. Master Breaker technique, free movement in the real world… An 8 1/5 year old created a god.
Basement = Apocalypseburg Bianca's room = Systar System Finn has enraged to destroy bianca's wedding cake Reason: bianca stole emmet's friends and into systar system to wedding
Rex's backstory is indeed pretty tragic. Sure, that's still not an excuse for his actions, but think about it. Emmet has nothing but crap from his friends most of the time he spent with them throughout the two movies. Laughing at him, looking down on him, belittling and trying to change him, altogether mocking him at times. And this happens to him, too? Trapped, alone, forgotten, is it any wonder why he turned into Rex at all? This is why I don't agree with Tv tropes (and I agree with what they write MOST of the time) when they said that Rex is one of, if not the most unsympathetic villains in the Lego Movie franchise.
@@gircakes Oh my gosh, yes! Definitely! Rex was Emmet, and we all know how much crap Emmet already had to go through as himself in the first movie. And now this? You're so right. I thought I was the only one. TV Tropes does not agree, though, but should I care? This guy's story IS sad.
@Spider Chavo I get what you're saying. And you're so right about how they developed Rex's backstory. Like you, I was thinking, what? All of his friends, and Lucy, of all people, would just give up on him like that and continue on with their lives? Impossible. Perhaps they'd given up and stopped looking, assuming the worst, but I highly doubt they'd have done so that quickly. Five years? No. Not likely. How they plotted out his story really surprises me, considering how they've already done and are already doing such a great job with the rest of the film. And the previous one was super awesome, too. As you've said, they definitely flubbed up something with Rex, which is too bad, since I really enjoyed and love his character so much.
@Spider Chavo Yes! I see what you're saying now. Would you have given Rex not only a sad backstory, but a sad backstory in which the people responsible for said sadness and all of the story's tragic events were supposedly 'heroes'? You're right, I don't quite get that.
Spider Chavo I get what your saying, but what if they weren’t trying to justify his friends actions at all? They were mean to him throughout the beginning of the movie and I doubt your supposed to not feel bad for Emmet for how his friends treated him. Rex isn’t the villain he’s just the antagonist, and you are supposed to feel sympathy for him because he is a victim. I’m pretty sure that you’re supposed to feel sympathy for Rex because the end of the movie doesn’t shame him for his actions. The end of the movie was about the forgiveness of Emmet’s friends because they redeem themselves by coming to save him the second time right away. Now I just wish it was cannon that Rex is now living as a separate minifigure because he didn’t deserve to die.
This is a great example of a twist villain done right. People complanits with twist villains in animated moviex is that the reveal near the end of the movie barley gives them any development fir us to ferl anything for them. But here, because Rex IS Emmett, Emmets problems afe Rex's problems. All those scenes of everyone tellinh Emmet he needs to toughen up. That he's too soft, weak, a total Hufflepuff! That was a clever way to set up and develop the villain of this movie without is even realizing it until the reveal itself. A great way to make a twist villain work.

In theory, if Rex’s friends were going back to Apocolypseburg to pick him up, they could’ve realized he was gone and thought he was dead. So if Rex went straight to the ceremony instead of traveling back in time, it would probably end like how it actually ended but without the past Emmet. Emmet (Rex)’s friends would realize he was alive, try to be happy and hug him blah blah, but since Emmet (Rex) thought they forgot him, he would’ve tried to destroy the ceremony. So then it would be the ending of the first movie but with Lucy changing Rex into the good guy again.
After all, she is the one who persuaded Emmet to change more than anybody. And look how that turned out, he turned into Rex Dangervest. Lucy should've been more careful with what she wants to wish for.
My theory: Between the first and second movie, Emmet was thrown under the washing machine. Then he became Rex. Emmet was friends with the others, but he forgot them. On Finn’s 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th birthday, he got another Emmet. This was the Emmet in The Lego Movie 2. He had all of Old Emmet’s/Rex’s memories. The other characters never knew about this, apart from Lucy. She never told New Emmet, but she wanted to make sure Emmet didn’t turn into Rex. She knew Finn wouldn’t want another Emmet, so she saved him. Extras: Rex didn’t actually disappear. It was pretend. Rex’s spaceship did not time travel, as it wouldn’t work.
There was absolutely no need for Rex to go back in time and force Emmet to become him. It would've happened naturally, as it did in Rex's timeline. What probably happened was the two siblings decided to continue the story, this time without fighting. If the brother and sister didn't fight, then Emmet wouldn't have crashed the second time around. I think this was just something the brother came up with to make the story better. In universe though, I don't think Rex time-traveled to make sure his origin story happened. He probably told himself he wanted to stop it from happening, but then why would he want Emmet to forget his friends and start being him? He was likely tired of being alone but couldn't find it in himself to trust anyone but _himself,_ so he tried to make another Rex just so he would have a friend. He didn't want Emmet to become Rex, or to stop Emmet from doing so, he just wanted a friend that would understand him. And who else would understand Rex than Rex? Emmet clearly doesn't get it, but Rex V2 would.
Rex could've just destroyed the ceremony in his timeline. But he was probably desperate for company which was why he went back in time and rescued Emmet.
This film used the Twist Villain trope, the Villain is related to the Protagonist trope, and the All Hope Is Lost until it isn’t trope, mixed them into a stew, and succeeded at it, whereas Rise Of Skywalker(released the same year) failed at ALL OF THEM.
I stopped watching the movie after it said "The End." It felt good to leave it on a bad-note with Rex winning & Emmett going under the dryer - despite 24 minutes left. Sometimes it's just better to have a bad ending (it doesn't always have to be gumdrops & rainbows which I see in waaaay too many films) ... and that was just perfect for me.
Time travel is a tricky thing to pull off for movie stories. So I'm not sure if the Time traveling aspect of this movie is good or bad? The story tellers could just have Rex be a lost brother to Emit. And then figure out the rest.

Fun Fact: Rex’s voice was based on Ego from GOTGV2 And yes we all know Chris Pratt was in that movie
Gamora - Lucy
All the foreshadowing for this movie:
1)in Emmet's vision after everyone is kidnapped, Finn said he was working on a story with time travel and mind blowing twists
2) Rex and Emmet look ALOT alike, 'cos come on, just look at these two
3) They're both voiced by Chris Pratt
4) Rex knows alot about Emmet
5) half the time Rex is talking he talks about the past, present and future
6)the other half is talking about how alike he and Emmet are
7)When Emmet first sees Rex's ship hes says 'ahhhhhh enemy ship!'
8) Emmet literally says about rex when Lucy sees him, 'oh thank gosh hes real, I was so worried he was just a projection of what my ego needs deep down!'
And the part when he gives a Rex vest to Emmet and when Emmet drawed stubble dots on his face like Rex
3:30 hold up if rex saved emmit from crashing in the past doesn't he already affected the future
It probably is the multiverse version of time travel. If that makes sense to you.
@@TheJengshoun2 remember, near the end when he fight Emmet and Wildstyle, he has the flux capacitor from the DeLorean with him that, once it's destroyed he starts to be erased from the timeline. That's why he shot emmet off the ship under the dryer but widlstyle came to save him since no one did to rex so since emmet was saved he can't become rex which is why he vanishes at the end

Nahh Pratt was playing Rex
They would but they hear that he maybe be Trump supporters or something stupid like that.. 😜
That's a twist that's very twisty
Without Rex, there would've been no possible way for Emmet to remain Emmet.
If Sweet Mayhem took Emmet with her and his friends Rex wouldn't exist in the first place.
I feel so bad for emmet and his friends

Movies like to hide things until we figure it out ourselves
Rex: I'm you from the future.
Aremomgetin
Because very deep down, he still cares. It's like Vader's redemption.
I think that's all Rex's fault because he's like a teenager Finn who wants revenge on his sister, his maturity creating a major disaster
But compare him being under a dryer for who knows, we don't blame him for that.
If rex hadn't turned out to be an evil emmet from the future , and had these movies kept going, I wouldve loved to see a rex prequel/spinoff

Its even more depressing to realise rex actually has experienced the events of the first lego Movie.
Now, in Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, Chelsea turned out to be an evil version of Ariel.
ik this is an old comment but Ruby gillman is not a disney movie
Emmet is not alone in having trouble getting his head around this. When I think about time travel too much, I end up creating time paradoxes and getting further from the answers to any of my questions.
The so-called “hero” was the true villain all along. The cruel, cruel irony

Is no one talking about how lego made a reference to the terminator in a kids movie?
@Spider Chavo I agree. See, I think this is why I often find myself wanting more Rex, somehow, some way...

It wouldn't fit into the movie plot tho.

Dark Emmet becomes Rex 2:11
My theory:
Between the first and second movie, Emmet was thrown under the washing machine.
Extras:
Rex didn’t actually disappear. It was pretend.
Rex’s spaceship did not time travel, as it wouldn’t work.
Yeah that's what I know too.
Rex was original Emmet the whole time.
I didn't realize that until I read your theory which has surprised me that Rex is Emmet for the whole time.
That means emmet is my favorite hero and a villain
Good job nailing his real motivations. This comment needs more exposure.
What adds to the theory is Emmet saying ¨I know how you feel¨ then Rex replying ¨You couldn´t possibly know how I feel¨.
I agree I wish this was a real ending with a post credit scene were the mini figures of famous musicians are the new heroes to stop Rex
