Thank you for this video! I'm 46 and have many diffuse floaters that seem to have always been there. After turning 40, I started to notice new floaties that were different. I call these my "blurry floaties." They act just like the darker squiggly ones, but they blur my vision as they pass by. These make it difficult to read, particularly if the background is light. I seem to have more problems with glare now. I had Lasik in 2014. It's a dream of mine and many others I'm sure to have a day without floaties before we die. Fingers crossed something with low risk and great results comes soon!

I started having floaters when I was 34, at the age of 36 I got the laser surgery done with four laser treatments and I can tell you it did not work. The doc talked me into how I would be a perfect candidate since I had chunk of floaters but he was clearly wrong. It’s been six years and I am still living with it and it has gotten worse.

Hi, I’m 30 years old and I just started noticing the eye floters a couple months ago. It’s very scary and worrisome because you don’t know the cause of this or why this is happening to your vision. I felt like I was going blind. It’s still very hard to get use to it, my worry is what’s the outcome as I age, do they get worse???
What a great informative video. I'm 69 and have had floaters in both eyes for 20 years. My eye doctor said they are huge blobs but nothing can be done. It's getting to the point they hinder my sight very badly. Will check to see if medicare will help.
I've had eye floaters since I was 18 years old , I'm 24 now. They bother me every single moment of my life. They're constantly in my field of vision. It pretty much makes going outside very difficult to do.

thanks alot, soo helpfull, i have lots of floaters that arnt really bothersome, but when im reading, the darker ones tend to make it very dificult. i seriously thought i was the only one, i was told its just my imagination as a child.

I’m 63, blue eyed, and near sighted. The floater in left eye started with lighting bolt flash about 3 years ago. The floater is now stable but large, dead center in my vision. My brain has accommodated about 70% of it, but there is enough that I ‘see’ when I’m trying to focus on detail that it diminishes both detail and light. The right eye has developed a smaller floater in recent months, but my brain can screen it out most of the time. It tends to be seen more in peripheral vision. I’m thinking about techniques to minimize the floater in left eye, hence watching this vid. But, the risks of futzing with my vision warrants great caution. That said,I’m discussing the options with my doc. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for a very informative video! Is there a standard system for grading the severity of floaters? My online search found a grading system for cataracts but nothing for floaters. Thought a grading system would be helpful in discussions about floaters.
I learned quite a bit about eye floaters here and the presentation is quick and concise regarding the details that are useful to know. I originally starting experiencing floaters years ago but they were few and far between and actually seemed to disappear after a period of months. In the last 2 years they have drastically increased and are starting to obstruct my vision in certain situations. Most notably when using a computer where I can see the floaters quite clearly against a white background on the monitor screen.
62+yo - finally convinced my parents, when about 10yrs old, to take me to a specialist. Result : "you are imagining it". Was detection not possible (way back in the late 60's? Surely a lot of people would have a similar complaint!
I noticed my floaters almost 50 years ago, when I was in high school. I am used to them, but they are worse, plus I have cataracts...
My cataract evaluation has been rescheduled twice because of Covid-19.
I noticed mine 40 years ago walking home one day after school.
I had a cataract in my right eye in my mid-50s and a PVD shortly following the cataract surgery. The floater is a large tumbleweed that moves across my vision whenever I move my eye. It's tolerable because I don't have floaters in my left eye. It's been about 18 months. I'd consider a FOV if things stay the same.
I'm 65 and started with floaters a couple of weeks ago. Got into a High Street opticians in days and had an OCT scan which didn't show any issues. However they are very annoying and I reckon I am suffering from depression because of this. I'm currently waiting to see a specialist with our NHS to see if anything can be done. Greta video.

Sorry to hear that. I have kind of got used to them. I find sunglasses and peaked cap help when I'm out and little things like having white text on a dark background on my electronic devices. Hang in there, they won't seem as bad in a few months. I have friends and family who also have them, so very common.
I'm headed to Mayo Clinic as a follow-up to a Vitreous Hemorrhage. Current doc is leaning towards a Vitrectomy, since we're nine months out and still dealing with significant floaters. Can you tell me if any docs at Mayo are embracing Vitreolysis? And thank you for creating these videos. Hands-down, the best eye care videos I have found. Please keep making them. 🙂
I have had eye floaters since I was about 23 years old (now 34), I had YAG laser procedure due to secondary cataracts in both eyes. I have so many floaters I can't count them, and during a job interview, the interviewer was sitting with a grey background in a well lit room and it was not easy to look him in the eye with all these floaters. I don't really want any more lasers being shot into my eyes, honestly I would rather Ophthalmology find safer ways to handle this treatment that won't harm the eye. I have been told that I am at risk for retinal detachment due to the artificial lenses being thinner than the natural lens, this thinner lens makes more room for the vitreous fluid to expand. I really hope that there is some breakthrough with STEM cells or something that will enable me to see properly again.
I believe I noticed my first floater when I was about 13. They have increased over the years, I’m now 70. They are bothersome to be sure. Not certain I’m ready for laser surgery however.

I have eye floaters caused by the laser capsulotomy to treat a PCO after cataract surgery. I see my eye doctor again in February. He did the procedure 4 days ago
Thank you Doc, this was very informative. I've had these floaters in my eye ever since I had an head injury in football and the ball hit me in the eye really hard. I thought that they'll just disappear after a while but after 2 years they're still in my sight and it has really bothered me for instance when I'm reading I can't concentrate on the text and just look at the floaters instead. @@mukeshlnh Sorry for replying so late but unfortunately due to the pandemic my treatment wasn't in the priority list so it has been postponed until march of this year but I will happily inform you about the process. The treatment itself is called Vitreolysis or laser floater removal. It's basically a mild laser enermy beams thst pop the floaters into smaller pieces until they're are unrecognisable by your brain.

I have had one of those Wiess floaters in my left eye for maybe 15 plus years. Of course, I have gotten used to it, but it does affect my eye exam.

If I don't do lesser than I lost my vision or retina detachment?
Its been around 6 years I haven’t operated and there increasing day by day. Could you please suggest me what to in that case and even i think i have cataract problem as well. What will be the best procedure to go for
38 years old living with a swirl storm of varying opacities, large weiss ring and a bunch of small floaters wrecking havoc on my right eye. It’s been about 4 months now since I was diagnosed with PVD, and have now been to 3 specialists. I WAS a photographer, but my condition has gotten so bad, I can’t sit behind a computer monitor and edit images from my past shoots in the studio without constantly moving my head around, and my visions isn’t tack sharp in my right eye. I also have trouble at night, as the lights from passing cars and tail lights look like giant blurs on my right eye.
I had to put my photography career on hold, and get a part-time job until I get the issue resolved. It’s left me feeling extremely depressed and anxious, and as of Monday next week I’m meeting with. Therapist to deal with onset of stress and depression this has brought on. What’s more, I’m noticing issues with my left eye, but the last specialist I saw didn’t notice any onset of PVD in the left eye.
I am completely besides myself and have been waking up in tears some mornings having a difficult time comprehending how this has become my life and why this happened to me at not even 40 years of age.
I had a big one for about 8 months. So so bothersome and it was getting to the point where I was really bothered by it like a hurt back or something debilitating. Went for first laser treatment and it feels so much better
How it is so far , is there any side effect ?

Thanks for the video! I’ve had floaters for about 5 months now in my right eye. I had a vitrectomy for VMT and resulted in floaters as some of the jelly was too sticky for the Dr to remove without risking damage to my retina. I had a full thickness hole in my left eye so that’s why I went thru an early intervention surgery on the right eye. The floaters were definitely worrisome in the beginning but I am getting used to them. They are mostly in my peripheral vision and I don’t usually see them cross my central vision unless I am outside looking up at the sky.
Hi. Just had cobweb eye floaters 2 days ago. Went to opticians immediately, told me nothing could be done. I have been very depressed since but seeing this episode and others there are things out there that can be done. So more info please

Hello Doctor Alan, what a great educational video ! You really do such a great job in making lay people understand quite complex problems of the eye and the different therapies. Thanks very much. I got eye floaters from a retinal detachment and a cryopexy surgery. They look like a grey-brown ink cloud in water or a spider web. Since the structure is quite in the center of the eye it’s really annoying and impacts my vision significantly. The incident happened 9 months ago and the floaters haven’t changed at all ( neither better nor worse) What is your suggestion to do ?

@CT-lo9ot my status is unchanged, I try to live with it since 2 doctors advised against removing the vitreous body. Apparently there is a chance between 5 to 15% of a new retinal detachment after surgery. I don't have much knowledge about removing my type of floaters with laser and wold be very grateful for any additional information.

had them for over 12 / 13 years... i have good days and bad days, but im seriously considering YAG treatment for one that falls into my line of sight. it's only in my right eye.
There is a doctor in florida that has done this to people as young as 25 years old. I am in Cali but I might be giving him a visit.
I had a very scary(for me) PVD in my left eye with all kinds of very pronounced symptoms. I have a great eye doctor who explained to me what was happening to my eye(I'm 68) , and emphasized it was a common occurance in older people and in fact he had recently dealt with it himself. He basically said don't worry about unless he told me to.He really made an effort to reassure me but my symtoms seemed to me to be more severe than a lot of people that experience it. Finally most of the visual symtoms that concerned me disappeared , but two or three months later I started getting circular flashes in that eye with the appearance of some major floaters so I went in for an emergency visit. Fortunately everything was ok in terms of the eye structure, but I've got some major floaters that won't go away, unlike the ones I've had all my life.I've got one huge one that when I squint and look at a bright background looks like a floating curled sheet and that's the one that's big and bothersome and is noticable all the time.I ask about them every time I go in (every three months because of a severe glaucoma in my other eye), but he always says yes they're there but my vision is good enough that he wouldn't recommend doing anything about it until it got a lot worse, because of the risks.I'm going to ask him about the laser method time I go in. Hi! I had a posterior vitreous detachment almost three years ago and had laser vitreolysis done several times in Southern California, in Irvine, i.e, the floater doctor. I had 7 treatments on my left eye and 2 on my right eye. I had a large Weiss ring in both eyes, but my left eye was particularly bad. I had a tune-up done today after more than a year because Dr. Johnson moves to Texas, but I found there is another doctor who offers it now in Long Beach, CA. So, I am not totally out of options should I decide to have more treatments. I would say, today, that improvement is now close to 85%. in one eye and 90% in the other eye. I got very frustrated by all the doctors telling me I should get used to it. I even had one Kaiser doctor tell me I could give one particularly big floater a name like Bob. I am not kidding. Unless you have experienced dark, not transparent, rings, strings, cobwebs, and specks in your eyes, you really cannot estimate the psychological and emotional impact. Yes, the brain adapts to a certain extent, but not when these things are present in large numbers or in the middle of your vision. Dr. Johnson is great. He saved my sanity.

Have had them for 15 years. They look like someone in my eye pulled apart a Brillo pad and it has big holes and little holes and tethers with flags waving around. They are absolutely horrible and have been praying for a treatment. Voila! Thank you so much for your easy to understand explanation of the different floaters and how they would be treated. Next task, find a good doctor who does the procedure. I live in Savannah, Georgia, if anyone knows someone close by.

Uggg. yes, I started having floaters in my 20's. I am now going to be 43 (YIKES) and for the last 3 years they have increased where they are more webs which move to the center of my vision in both eyes. I ALWAYS see them whether in bright or dimmed lights which makes it very hard. I've also started to see flashes once in a while on the side of my eyes. I have a very high astigmatism so I'm hoping that I can be a candidate for the laser one.

Thanks for the informative video, it's taken a long time for me to identify the type of floaters I have, I now know I have Weiss ring in both eyes, I'm fed up with people saying you'll have to live with them, these floaters are not the little squigly ones that everyone / google assumes, they are large clumps that have been very disabiltating and seriously affect my vision every day, ive had these for over a year now does anyone know if this laser treatment is available in uk?
Revered Doctor Allen, I am suffering from blurred vision and suspect that after a huge bout of keratoconjunctivitis, my Meibomian glands have stopped working altogether causing dry eyes. My question is, whats the treatment or management procedure if the Meibomian glands atrophy permanently ? Thanks a lot in advance , and yours is the best medical channel on the Tube!
Thank you so much Soham. There are very few reports of success getting Meibomian glands back after they have completely atrophied. Have you had any assessment to measure how many glands you have left? If I remember right I believe there was at least 1 anecdotal reports of the Regener-Eyes medications improving MGD atrophy

I just went to the Doctor’s and found out that I have PVD. He told me that my loathe floater will probably go away but I also had a cataract and had it removed a year ago. Would this laser treatment be good for me if it doesn’t go away? Thanks so much!
I've just had this treatment from Dr. Scott Geller here in Fort Myers Florida. One session for the left eye and three for the right. Huge improvement. Very satisfied.
is there any long term effects with this procedure if so, did your doctor mentioned it or do you know what are they?
@@luisalvaro5601 I'm not aware of any long term effects, but I should add to my previous comment that my left eye improved very substantially after only one treatment but in my right eye, it was like tearing open a bag of garbage. There is a big mess to clean up. That is why there were three treatments on the right eye so far and more to come when I return to Florida. Dr. Geller has nearly a quarter century of experience doing this and he is quite precise with his instruments and competent with his knowledge. I think the biggest risk is like what I am going through, but I am confident Dr. Geller will get the job done.

@@sunethsilva2720 I've now had several more treatments during this last winter and after each one I seemed to have improvement but after a couple weeks that improvement was gone. Now, in my right eye only, it seems worse than when I started, but my left eye is still better than when I started. Dr. Geller is now suggesting vitrectomy but I am not comfortable with the risks.

The optometrist never offered any kind of solution for them.
FUNNY DOGS three doctors I know of Johnson in LA, Geller in fort Myers and Singh in Wisconsin.
You have pvd started in late December. So the vitreous jell never stops separating?
It is so frustrating. Those optometrist never helps in floater cases. They just say that we have to live with them.

Until watching this video, I thought that any eye floater treatments were considered to be risky at best, with a string of possible side effects that may not make treatment ‘worth it’ because it could actually lead to bigger problems in the future.
Is this the case with the first treatment you described in this video? Or is this a newer or possibly more recently ‘accepted’ sort of treatment for floaters in folks that otherwise have healthy eyes?
In the past two years, I’ve noticed a lot more floaters in my own eyes (my doc told me to live with it-that he can hardly see them when examining my eyes) that are quite bothersome if I am in a well-lit area.

Thanks Lisa! I appreciate you. The surgical options for floater treatment still carry their own risks but as new techniques and studies come out, the reported rate of complications are getting to about 2% (depending on the study). It very much depends on how bad someones symptoms are, how comfortable the surgeon is and other health factors.

I have a giant floater that is distorting my vision basically I cannot focus and seem to have lost some depth perception. when this floater first arrived it was combined with a flashing light show. the light show went away but the floater has not. My eye doctor said it was very large which I already knew ....but it might go away. Its been about 4 weeks now and it is still smack dab in the middle of my vision so I have an appointment with a retina specialist next week. it is good to have all of the knowledge this in advance.

I feel like I’ve had them all my life but recently within the last 3 month they’ve gotten worse. Particularly in my right eye. Sometimes it scares me because it looks like the shadow of someone walking by me. When I’m alone that can startle me a bit. Lol after quarantine is over I will be making an appointment to see my eye specialist.

Last year I was diagnosed with central serous retinopathy in my left eye. I've been left with a very small area of distorted central vision in that eye. It's quite minimal, barely noticeable when looking at an amsler grid. Could this potentially interfere with candidacy for laser vitreolysis? My ophthalmologist says my retinas are completely healthy and flat. I'm 35 and have had floaters for ~7 years, and am not comfortable with the risks associated with vitrectomy. Thanks for the video. I have had floaters in one eye following macular hole surgery six years ago and two rounds of YAG laser posterior capsulotomy. They have become more bothersome recently, as they seem to have increased in number and come more into the center of my vision but they are mainly small spots, some of which are in focus and some not. My ophthamologist told me she doesn't recommend YAG laser for floaters at all due to the risks you mentioned. Anyway with a lot of small floaters at different points in the eye, I guess I would not be a good candidate for YAG floater removal. Another vitrectomy might be the only option, if I want to do anything. The fellow eye has had two macular hole surgeries and one YAG posterior capsulotomy but fortunately has no floaters at all.
I have heard from other doctors that your age and how close the floater is to the lens or retina could impact whether they can do this or not. Is that accurate? I only have one floater in one eye that has just appeared but it is right in the middle of my vision and doesn’t go away at all outdoors. It’s truly making me crazy. I have been obsessed with determining if I could have it fixed. I realize I have a while to wait and see what happens with it. But I’m the mean time, I feel like researching and having a plan makes me less anxious.
Thanks for the great question Erin. Yes, the location of the floater to the retina and lens does play a role in whether someone is a good candidate for this procedure. Age is a little less concerning but with any laser treatment there can be side effects. Hopefully your floaters improve on their own.

I have posterior vitreous separation in both eyes with many large floaters. My prescription is around -16.5 for nearsightedness. Is this treatment for me? The floaters make driving and day to day activities difficult.
I am experiencing an increase in floaters! I have what a call the "screen" floaters -- imagine a screen from a window with all those millions of little holes being represented by tiny circles -- I'm talking millions of transparent little buggers! Then there are the circular, larger floaters that I describe best as glaciers -- as I move my eyes, an entire pallet of a floater, with a rim, is in my field of vision. Then, of course, there are the small, one-off, black random small floaters of different shapes and sizes -- not a lot, but there are times I catch glimpse of what could be a roach crossing the floor, when it turns out to be a floater! My right eye seems to be the big culprit -- it has the glacier(s) as well as the "screen" view effect; the left has the one-off black little floaters. It has progressed in recent weeks where it is more difficult to read -- imagine reading through a screen -- you would need more light and a bigger font! I need to find a very experienced ophthalmologist who has used the YAG laser for treatment of floaters! Any suggesting in the Atlanta/Alpharetta area?? Thanks.

Instead of going to sleep laying down, try to sleep sitting.
Somebody mentioned that this helps floaters go to the bottom of your field of vision, so they don't bother you when you see around.

@@kamykcod4 I am so sorry, but none of that works. Depending on the cause of your floaters, most of them are around to stay. I have heard that bromelain, present in pineapple, may have some effect, and I suppose it would not hurt to take a supplement, but for my floaters, the laser was the only way to improve the situation.

I hate it but yeah the title is all I can really say. I’ve never had a problem like floaters before and I’m 20. It all started after having several panic attacks. I’m glad I’m not alone though I’ve noticed them a lot less like they’ve dissolved it was worse a few months ago but I think anxiety had a lot to do with the stress on my eyes. I’ve been taking multi vitamins, and eating healthier. I’ve gotten used to them they’re like my little eye buddies that annoy the hell out of me. I’m still accepting that they’re here to stay at least for a little. (Also I’m near sighted and I’m on my phone like constantly). Like my advice would be to just stay calm really take one day at a time. At first I got depressed and then I realized if I let this control me I would lose everything. But yeah stay strong :)

Thanks for the video! I recently had laser surgery after retina detachment due to natural aging. After the procedure I continue to have Large floater type objects come in and out of vision. Similar to looking through a plastic bag. I can see but things are blurry and distorted. I’m only 6 weeks out so I know I have to wait for some time before I look into procedures to help. Maybe it’ll clear up on its own. Nice to know there may be treatments later if needed. Thank you!

My left eye had a vitreous detachment and the very large floaters started right after. This was about a year ago and now the right eye has done the same thing and the really large floaters are distracting and bothersome. My eye doctor checked for retina damage and said it was just the vitreous again. I am seeking treatment now.

I’ve had a large floater on my left eye for about 10 years. The day it was born I saw flashes of light peripherally. It is the shape of a large eyelash and covers 10% of me eye in the front center.
It bothers me most of the time, especially in a bright room with blank walls, around lamps, and when I’m driving if there’s bright open sky. It bothers me less if there’s a mosaic of objects in the environment.
I have some in my right eye that I never notice.
The first eight years I saw six Kaiser Opthamologists who saw the floater and said there was no surgical or pharmaceutical treatment for floaters and nothing being developed in trials.
I left KP last year because they also don’t test for vitamin D levels and they failed to diagnose my ulcers, hernia and gut dysbiosis, though I had asked for labwork for years. (They prescribed Zantac. TG I stopped taking it after a year.)
I see a functional doctor in an integrated practice now. I am very happy and much healthier.

I've had floaters since 2 months.. initially it was a lot of them..but i seem to see them lesser and lesser..and some of them have already gone i guess..and with time they are getting lighter and lighter..they were black at first now they are brownish..is it normal..can i expect to get rid of them in near future..

I’ve had mine start developing a year or 2 after lasik I had in 2007. If I would of known that suction ring put that much pressure on your eye I wouldn’t of had it done. Some days it drives me nuts.

The same thing happened to me
I first noticed them when I was 5 or 6. I'm nearly 60 now. This past year the flashes and gel detachment started. I've always had to "see around" the floaters. They interfere with my work, I'm a finisher among other things, and make reading and writing a chore. 3 optometrists have literally laughed at me when I asked if something could be done. It would be great if I could regain a clear field of vision.
1 week into PVD. Got the weiss ring. More aggravating than anything. Hoping it will "iron out" or just float out of my primary vision.
