  • Hey Expeditioners, welcome back to the channel. This week's video features another honest review of my SENA 20S comm system that I use for motorcycle riding. I hope to give those considering purchasing the 20S EVO some insight before they make their purchase.
Also coming soon is our first AP EXPEDITION t-shirt, so for those interested follow my instagram for more details about an up coming pre-sale.

I do like the 20s, but there is one thing short for me and that is a push to talk function! I don't always like being open mic'd, sometimes I just, you know, talk to yourself! Sometimes you just want to put some tunes on and hum/sing along, my buddies too, we had walkey talkey radios back in the day and had ptt buttons on handlebar, loved the function, hated the wires lol..... Never happy!! The sena is voice activated so I would really like an 'activation' word, like sena for example! Channel is always open, mics on mute untill sena is said then mutes again with 5 seconds of silence.... Or something!

I know the sena 20s only suits a group of 4. Is this number higher when connected to a Cardo mesh group?

What if I want to talk private with my wife? Because I understand when you are paired with a group you don’t have that option? Anyone have any information on this…. I’m new and trying to figure out what to buy

Cant get enough audio volume. Sena 10S volume is plenty.

One HUGE! gripe I have is that the Sena speakers don't fit and indent flush into my and most helmet speaker recessed areas. Because the Sena speakers have a "pear" shaped plastic radius where the speaker wire exits from the speaker and the helmet recessed speaker area is completely round, and will not accommodate the "pear" shaped plastic speaker wire protection that is built into each of the Sena speakers. If you want the Sena speakers to fit the helmet speaker recessed area, you must cut out some of the helmet inner plastic in a small area then you can make them fit. My problem is with Sena management who very well knew that very few if any helmet manufacturers recessed speaker areas will accommodate that Sena "pear" shaped speaker wire protector - but made, and sells this poor design anyway. Sena should have designed their speaker to fit the helmet manufactures common speaker recessed area. I had to cut plastic out of my new SHOIE to make the Sena speakers fit. NOT GOOD SENA! My Cardo helmet headset speakers fit perfectly; no cutting of helmet interior plastic needed. Only reason I bought the Sena is because my new Harley requires it to receive full functionality - but that's another story. Buyer be ware! To me this is a CHEAP AND DIRTY TRICK, BY CONSCIOUS DESIGN, BY SENA.

Cardo claim water proof. Sena does not. Sena claims water resistant. I have rode in downpours with my Sena 20S EVOs many many timing, and have not lost a unit yet, in five years, knock on wood.
But Sena does not claim waterproof.
Save the factory USB cable. Update the firmware (Any Sena model) to latest (latest has fixed nearly every issue, as of March, 2021)
And look at the Sena +Mesh unit for a quick fix to the Sena 20's not doing mesh.
Shoei has two helmet models that take a Sena SRL2, which is an integrated 20S EVO in helmet mounting, so no external mounting.
Bilt has helmets with integrated Sena systems, but be careful. The DWO-5 is only point to point, two person intercom. The DWO-5 PRO lets you connect to groups. I don't recommend the non-PRO. Buyer beware.
Sena has HD speakers that are about 1mm thicker (but more bass) and thin models (sound same as standard, to me, but are about half as thick as standard, which made a difference on my dual sport helmet.)
There is also a black button on the bottom of the mount. Double click it and it turns off sound from your Bluetooth intercom/phone/GPS and turns on an exterior mic (mode is called Ambient), so you can walk into the gas station, double push the button, hear everyone around you (amplified so you can leave earplugs in too) and then a single push will return to intercom/phone/GPS.

I would like to know about the audio quality, My current budget system once you reach a speed of 20Mph you cant hear a damn thing its pointless to even have. My concern is i dont want to spend 300 bucks on yet another system that at speed you cant hear anything.

@@tonyemory3618 Hey Tony. So I testet it today. I was driving with around 40 mph and calling my wife. It works very well. In the first moment I was thinking that the sound is to quiet but then I was turning the sound complete up and it was that loud that it was almost hurting in my ears. So you can make it very loud in a call. I have the 20S evo with HD speakers. I am using a full face helmet and I was using the wired mic. My wife couldn´t even hear that I am driving on my bike. The visor was open too. The helmet what I am using is a LS2 Vector II. I got the Sena system in a sale for 200 Euro.
I can recommend it. If you have anymore questions let me know.
      Ride safe!
