  • The Russian army on Monday struck more than 30 towns and villages in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region after launching a surprise ground offensive over the border last week.
“They are shelling the villages, firing everything they can,” Sergiy Kryvetchenko, deputy head of the Ukrainian military administration in the village of Lyptsi, told AFP.
“The KABs (guided aerial bombs) are flying. The artillery is flying. Drones. Everything,” he said.
The Ukrainian army acknowledged Russia was “achieving tactical success” after the ground assault, which sparked the evacuation of almost 6,000 people.
Russia’s defence ministry said its troops had “improved the tactical position and dealt a blow to [Ukrainian] manpower” around border villages, including Lyptsi, and the town of Vovchansk.

Ukrainian economist Alexey Kushch believes that Belousov's appointment comes as bad news for Kyiv. The expert suggested that this would lead to a sharp increase in the dynamics of the Russian military-industrial complex (MIC) and a growth in Russia's military production.
Kushch called Belousov the person who played an important role in creating "a model of Russian economic growth, deep structural transformations and adaptation to sanctions.”

In war, it's more strategic to retreat and conserve your resources for the opportune moment, rather than squandering lives and resources in a futile battle. It's not as simple as Ukraine losing because they retreated from a city or a town; it's one of numerous tactical decisions one must make in war. The reason behind this is that Russia recently deployed thousands of new conscripts to these fronts, it puts a strain on Ukrainians limited manpower and resources.

According to the American Institute for the Study of War, the losses of the Ukrainian army in Avdeevka were 22 times greater than the losses of the Russian army. The Russian army destroyed the Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers from a distance, using drones, artillery and aviation, so losses Russian army were minimal.

@@Tom_3017 Nah the defensive lines were put further back. It's better this way for the Ukrainians.
If they let Russia capture the land, Ukrainians know and understand the terrain which is better for counter-attacking and fire support. But it also means that Ukrainians can destroy key infrastructure in their own land and Russians wouldn't already have built ways around it.
Whereas if the defensive lines were close to the border, Russia would have already prepared for their logistical hubs to get targeted.
The settlements Russians have captured hold little to no strategic significance.
Russians have met the defensive lines now though. In fact I'm reading something from the Russian MoD stating that they've captured a village behind the defensive lines. I don't see any evidence of that. But if they did then that's impressive and a big problem for Ukraine.
As for why Ukraine replaced the commander, I can't pretend to know. My guess is that the evacuation of civilians was a shambles and Russians advanced too quickly. Ukraine practically gave the land away which is very bad. They should've made Russia fight for those villages, even if Ukraine was making a fighting retreat.
Losing those villages and towns had no strategic importance, but losing them so quickly and so easily is a huge tactical failure for Ukraine.
