I think passing a driving test on a closed circuit is a totally pathetic idea. It gives the examiner zero proof that the learner is able to deal with real life driving. Even if they stop at the stop sign. There is no way of telling if the learner is able to judge the speed of oncoming traffic or not. Same thing with dealing with roundabouts and dual carriageways. I'm honestly surprised there have not been more accidents over there.

My United States are car-dependent almost to a fault, just based on the infrastructure and road design. That's probably part of the reason driving standards are so lax in the States. In most areas, we don't really have good trains or other transit apart from cars to fall back on reliably, so it's really debilitating here if you end up losing your license somehow... even though we have language to the effect of "driving is a privilege, not a right".

after having lived in several countries i realise it must have something to do with the size of the country itself. for places like japan and most european countries since their cities and towns are more or less closely connected to one another, their public transport feels more convenient as only very remote destinations require use of car.
however for countries of a larger size like canada and china, because of the overall layout of cities. it takes a lot more to cover the entire country with public transit.( also takes a lot to maintain with 「less people per longer transit distance」 for sure
i hope this brings a bit relief. that said i would definitely prefer a small country with dense infrastructures

Great video, quite cool to compare driving tests across diff countries 👍🏻 in my country (Singapore), most cars are auto but people can choose to learn auto or manual. I took auto, and our driving test is quite different from that in the UK. It has two parts
    1)Circuit
The circuit is located in the driving centre, and here we are tested on 90 degree reverse bay parking, parallel parking, the crank course (two 90 degree sharp turns), the s-course (a narrow s shape road), ramp (moving up a platform forward and braking immediately to not hit the pole in front, doing the same in reverse), moving off a steep upward slope and emergency brake (same as the emergency stop in the UK test). If we complete the circuit without too many faults (incurring no more than 18 demerit points) and we don't commit an immediate failure mistake (equivalent to a serious or dangerous driving fault in the UK test), we move on to road driving.
    2)Driving on the public road
Quite a short duration on the road, where if we drive in observance of traffic rules and regulations, commit no immediate failure mistakes and don't exceed 18 demerit points (road and circuit combined), we pass.
In SG one must be at least 18 years old to take the theory test (and take the driving test).

I didn't realize how strict northeastern states are. For the Midwest state i lived in, driver's ed at 14.5yrs, learner's permit at 15, and provisional license at 16, unrestricted license at 18. The surrounding states are rural so they could get all this stuff a year younger than this. Usually because they also operate farm equipment in their family farms in rural states. Also tests can be closed course or on main road. My test was on the road and definitely stricter and way longer (probs in 30 min -40 min). Even for closed tests is a lot longer in dmvs in my area than what he said. So it really depends! And we mostly only use automatic cars.

Sounds like we live close in the states, 🇺🇸😉 Sounds a lot like my State’s driving privileges. Other countries seem like it’s a dreadful, disappointing long wait issue to receive a drivers license, like it’s a manual, very strict prison-like test, many anal rules you have obey to even try to get a DL. It’s a privilege to drive, not a penalty crime if you dont pass the first time driving. I seems like most kids are struck so hard if they don’t pass even a mock test, come on people, these are our children of the future, ease up.

Jeez, and I thought the NorthEast sounded lax compared to the NorthWest - Washington you have to take a 4 month course, you can only start that at 15 - you cannot get your permit until you are enrolled in that course, you have to have 5 hours with an instructor plus 50 hours with another driver who has at least 5 years experience and a clean record, then you have to pass a 50 question multiple choice test at 80%+, then you take a 30-60 min road test, on main roads, back roads and highways in which you also have to parallel park on a busy street, back out into a busy street, get up to speed, park, change lanes and back in park. Then you get an intermediate license from 16-18 where you cannot drive any passengers without a license (no time restriction, you can carry newly licensed drivers) and you cannot drive around the bar closing hours (I don't remember the exact hours). You also cannot get any violations with this license. Only once you turn 18 can you get your full license or your enhanced license that lets you go into Canda and Mexico without a passport and lets you drive there without a special license, the option I went for.

In my state of Australia. You can get your learners at 16yo which requires passing a road rules test with at least 85% I think accuracy then you have to get 120 hours of driving. That driving can be parent or instructor and out of the 120h, 20 need to be night time (between sunsets, not just dark outside). Once you get your hours, you need to pass the hazards test where you watch 25 videos and need to react to when it’s safe to do an action or slow down. Such as waiting to turn into a main road and wait for a break in traffic or a pedestrian crossing when they shouldn’t be (you still need to react). Once you turn 18, then you can do your test which is 30min on open road which is 2 stages. Stage 1 is lots of turns and a reverse park then stage 2 is higher speeds (60/70km/h) and lane changing. You can make a few mistakes dependant on their severity and if you pass, you get your probationary licence (P1) which are red. On any probationary, you can’t have more than 1 person within the ages of 16-24 unless they are family or you have a fully licensed driver in the front passenger seat. After a year you get p2 (green) for another 3 years then you get your full license

Hell yeah, today passed the 1st time my Polish state practical exam, but mostly because of good examiner. He stopped the car when I was about to hit a pole on the curve on manuevers square (while driving to the next task) and told me to watch out more instead of straight up failing me. Also he passed my perpendicular parking despite it being not the best (I hate it, I even prefer parallel parking).
Seriously, even infrastructure wanted to fail me. Roadworks, not that visible road signs, hedges on crossing corners (with roads of same impotance, aka right hand rule) and I was scared he'd count some actions, even justified (like left lane driving because of incoming roadworks) as equivalents of British minor faults.
But hey, the most important is that I passed.
And I was a smartass, because I've strategically made an appointment during noon, where most of potential pedestrians are sitting in home and on Thrusday, when there is no temporary market places on potential driving route (Tuesdays and Fridays).
How does all of procedures look like (category B, aka mainly personal cars, because it gives you some other priviliges):
Become 18 years old - 3 months (you can start earlier, but to receive a license you have to be 18 years old).
You get examined by a doc if you're elligible at all to driving motor vehicles and depending on your health physician writes down, how long will your license be valid (since I was examined there are no more infinite expiry dates, now max is 15 years, I got 15 years of validity).
Then you go to the city office or county office (depending on where you live) and fill in papers to apply for a number for Driver Candidate Profile, which later on will be a basis for getting your license when going back to office after passed practical exam.
Depending on how skilled you feel you can straight up pass state theory test or you can go to driving school. Still you have to get required 30 hours to be able to apply for a practical exam.
Now practical, because theory is boring.
You're chosen an examiner via drawing and firstly you're ordered to describe one out of 4 stuff in engine bay (sprinkler fluid, engine oil, coolant or brake fluid) + check if 1 out of several lights are working.
Then we go on so called curve (official name is something else), where you have to drive forward, park on an "envelope" (called like that because of the shape) and then take the same route backwards and park on the envelope you were originally with stopping allowed only on envelopes. Crossing a line, hitting a pole or doing 2 equivalents of British minor faults, called here simply mistakes (here it's stopping between enveloped, driving on a line but not crossing it and something else) end the entire exam. After a mistake you have to start again from the start.
Then we travel on a little hill, where you have to start uphill with a handbrake. Stalling equals a mistake (yes, automatic transmissions are for lazy).
After successful manuever square tasks we're taken to the city, where you show your driving skills and instructor tells, what you have to do (I have paper from an exam, which will help me here):
    - one out of 4 possible parking techniques (I was given a perpendicular parking, front first)
    - introducing myself to traffic
    - driving on one-lane roads, multi-lane roads, one way roads
    - turning right, left, back on intersections
    - crossing intersections with and without set priority roads, intersections with traffic lights, roundabouts
    - crossing pedestrian crossing (fortunately there was not a single pedestrian visible unless in exam centre, but they didn't have priority there)
    - turning back with different techniques
    - crossing railroad tracks/tram tracks
    - driving near public transport stop
    - overtaking, evading, lane changing
    - economical driving (appropiate gear changing, braking with engine)
    - behaviour towards other traffic members
    Pretty fun, right?
After passed exam you go to the city/county office and pay for producing a license. From then on you wait up to 9 workdays and you're free to go.
In order to extend validity of your license you prepare photos, previous license, ID, medical report and some money.

  • @gabrieleriva_bboykappside

Here in Italy the car license can only be started when you are 18 so people would study theory or take mock theory tests some months before asking for a subscription. You have 6 months to study the theory and get a theory exam. It was recently changed and now it's 30 sentences, you have to answer rather true or false, for a time of 20 minutes and a maximum of 3 mistakes. You can fail it once and this second attempt must be within the 6 months, reason why they usually book it so that there's some time left so that if you fail first time you can book a new exam. If you don't pass this second attempt you have to do it all over again.
If you pass tho they give you a "pink sheet" how it is called here, it's a permit that lasts a lot of months so that you can drive at certain conditions. You can take lessons with an instructor (for a minimum of 6 just like in the US, some in the city, some in the highway and some when it's dark) and in the meantime practice with your family vehicle. You obviously have to be accompanied and the person who accompanies you must be driving since at least 10 years and cannot be older than 65. You have pretty much the same amount of time to prepare for the exam (I think it was 5 months) then you take it and if you pass, congratulations.
There are some restrictions: when you get the license you are legally considered a "newly licensed" for 3 years which implies highway and extraurban roads must be driven slower (100km/h maximum on highways and 90 on extraurbans)and you have limited max hp for a year. There is a point system and if you lose every point you have to regain them by doing a revisionary test, you lose points by doing some serious faults like parking where you shouldn't or passing with red light on. "newly licensed" get double the points removed since it is considered they have to pay extra attention

Tested in Delaware Ohio and Springfield Massachusetts after I moved to Mass. In Delaware the DMV is off of a highway so you have to get off the highway, go into a neighborhood, get lead back to the on ramp, and go back to the dmv and park. Prior to that you do maneuverability aka parallel parking just with cones instead of cars. The cones are what threw me when I tested 🤣 passed the driving portion but hit a cone during maneuverability which is an auto fail for that portion. In Springfield, the dmv is off a very busy road with almost nonstop traffic flow of people going to get on/off the highway. You pull onto that road, turn into a neighborhood (which takes forever when the traffic doesn’t stop, someone had to literally let me go because the line of cars was so long), obey the signs, use signals, park on the street, imitate parking on a hill, 3 point turn, parallel park, back up in a straight line, and then drive back and park. Ironically I passed the Massachusetts test which is technically harder because there’s more things to get wrong, I think it’s just because I was parking behind an actual car and not trying to squeeze between cones in my big ass car.

It is the same everywhere there are reasons for close circuits compare to open road. What the american failed to mention state and federal laws are different in each state. The process is over here in the states once 15 and 6 months from turning 16 you can go for the temps test allows you to drive with an adult or instructor each state as far as i know requires certain amount of hours with highway, night time and different road conditions driving schools like dgn are not required but its something that doesn't hurt. You dont have to wait to book your test. The actual test day what they have you do is two parts the cone test and the open road test. Pass them both you get paper work and you go to the bmv they would issue you a state licenses or probation license. You can only drive in the state where you get your license in by yourself. When you turn 18 you are eligible to get your licenses renewed. License will expire on your 21 st birthday no matter when you get your licenses thats when you can different states by yourself. Thats not even all there are different licenses in order to drive different vechiles state side and a little extra info got to be 25 to rent a vehicle.

Damn...My test in MN took me 20 minutes, and I had to go out on the main roads, no serious faults or it's an automatic fail, get into an accident that isn't your fault is also an auto fail. You start out with 100 points, so you cannot make too many mistakes since you need 80 points to pass. I also had to take mine in a town 3 hours out because nowhere near had any openings, so I was unfamiliar with the roads. I think since I passed on the main roads with a 90/100 in an unfamiliar city that's quite a bit larger than mine, I did pretty well.
Had to parallel park, and it was perfect. I had practiced in a 15 foot (4.5 meter) long car in a 20 foot (6 meter) long spot. So the spot they had me do it was really long in comparison. It was like 24 feet (7.3 meter) long. Backing up and doing the reverse bay parking between poles was a little iffy, but they gave me a couple tries, and I managed on my last one. I had started too close due to the awkward turning angle I had to make to get into the section of road, so I had to adjust. I got a bit flustered in the middle since I tapped one of the poles (which is an auto fail if you do it hard enough), took a deep breath and went slow. It helped that I had a running commentary to say what I was doing and why while I was driving so the tester wasn't guessing. :)

In Denmark you have to have 29 Theory lessons, and at least 16 droving lessons with a licensed driving instructor who also have to have at least a decade of driving experience. On top of that you also need to go through a mandatory 8 hour CPR course which you do have to pay for yourself. You need to pass an initial test before you'll even get to drive in traffic in an inclosed enviroment. That is also the case before your driving lesson as you'll be put in a situation were you'll have to drive in dangerous conditions and prevent the car from crashing. Each driving lesson is 45 minutes, which can also be extended to 1 hour and 30 minutes if you need to drive on highways. A theory lesson is also 1 hour and 30 to 45 minutes long. Before you'll even be allowed to attend a Theory test you need to be examined by a doctor to make sure that you are medically fit to drive. Privat driving lessons are also prohibited and can cost the driver a hefty fine of 2000 pounds and the passenger giving the lesson a 1500 pound fine. You can only get driving lessons from a licensed drivng
instructor. In most cases you can't get a drving test until your driving instructor deems you ready to take it. If he or she determines that you need more driving lessons you'll have to pay about 80 pounds per lesson. A few driving schools charge 1800 pounds for a course, but most charge upwards of 3000 pounds. You can get your drivers license at 16 years and 9 months old but you'll have to drive with an experienced driver with at least a decade of experience if you pass your driving test until your 18.

As an adult in NYC not NY state which has a rule like every other state 16. In the city, you gotta be 18. And you don't get a regular license till your 21. They make sure to state your not 21right next to your picture. Every state gets to do what they need to for their citizens.
    ....
    1. Read and studied the driving handbook.
    2. Took the written test,14 questions
    3. Took lessons and a 5-hour class (theory). No highway classes (you pay for those tourself) . In NYC the minimum is 1 class. But it's a refresher lesson and then test, but that's for those who used to drive.
    4. Then, depending on if you want to spend extra money or not, you can book the test yourself for with the DMV (super cheap) or pay the driving school to schedule you and use their car.
    5. Day of test you can't drive to the testing site, which for me was on an annex road, so there were cars and people. There were atleast 5 other driving schools at the same testing site. Some of which had 1 instructor who brought 3 or4 students + people who used their family or friends vehicle to test in. They can't drive that day either the family or friend has to drive them.
Not sure how long the test was. Went from the annex road to a residential area and back. I failed my 1st test because a lady started to cross the street I was turning into but hadn't moved yet. But as soon as my tires rolled, I automatically failed. He said I killed her.
    6. The test are quite short because it's too many people every day. I got an early test cause the instructor would be fresh you know. But the instructors are out there from 9am -5pm so it's like ... how can you give a 40min test to that many people in a day. Impossible.
    7. After you passed the test, they gave you a temporary license and you had to wait 2 weeks for your license to come to you in the mail. Now you go pick it up day of.

In alberta canada we got learners or class 7 have held for 1 year or 2 If your 14 how get it 30 multiple choice questions you have get 25 right out 30 after you pass you drive with a person with a driver's license then when 16 or have it for 1 year you go do your driver's test in real road, have parallel park highway stop signs the test last about 15 to 20 minutes one mistake and fail. Then if past you can get your license or gdl which comes with conditions that take to long to tell about and last one year.

Several other differences in the USA:
    * There are far more intersections with traffic lights than roundabouts. Most of our roads are right angle turns, and one cross road per intersection or roundabout. Often there is no need for complex lane changes in them.
    * In the USA we don't wait inside the intersections. Usually we wait just before the intersection before advancing.
    * Some US jurisdictions use a different order of checking things. Some states driver ed curriculum teach the "Signal, Mirror, Over Shoulder, Go" procedure instead of "Mirror Signal Maneuver"
    * Driving age varies by state between 14 1/2 and 17 and usually with graduated license restrictions for younger drivers. Each state has its own ages and graduated licensing restrictions.
    * USA has fewer cyclists and many roads have dedicated bike lanes so drivers checks for them are not constant.
    * USA Drives on the right side
    * USA has a much more relaxed lane discipline. Often many states are not strict about right vs left lane going straight except when turning. While there are laws on this, they are seldom enforced.
    * Most of our streets have dedicated lanes for each direction, and there are not as many edge lane or shared lane roads here. While what the UK meeting does occur in limited circumstances, it is uncommon because of the dedicated traffic lanes each direction. Roads that you have to pull over to the side when someone comes from the other direction are also not that common in the USA.
    * No brake light dazzle rules here in the USA. Instead many stop at intersections using the foot brake. Using the hand break at traffic lights is not common here. The USA views brake lights as a cue that they may need to stop or slow down. Plus with the number of automatic transmission drivers here, many leave their transmission in the "D' mode and depress the footbrake to stop.
    * Many in the USA drive automatics. There are still some stick shift drivers here but stick shifts are not as common in recent model years. Recently there has been a shift toward electric cars.
    * Signaling is done at each intersection with each turn, as opposed to UKs advance turning prior to entering roundabout.
    * Since so many intersections are traffic light controlled and stop sign controlled, drivers behind having to slow down is so common in the USA that is not a serious fault if it occurs in many cases. Instead, it is accepted culture of the US system.

In the USA ~ Sounds like each state is different in regards to their driving privileges, i know our state is much different from New York, California, etc… In Kansas, we can get a Farmers drivers license, at the age of 14 yrs. which is the same as a registered drivers license at 16 yrs. At 14 yrs you can also get a Permit license then at 17 yrs you can get your regular drivers license.
