I asked him about it and he laughed sheepishly, saying that because he was still getting used to the gear shift being on his right, he kept automatically reaching toward the left from muscle memory (he was in his late 40s and had been driving since his teens). As someone who emigrated from the UK to to Northern California, I can so relate to everything Joel is concerned about. Lia is an excellent co-pilot. Because of earthquakes, our homes are built from wood as it’s a natural product and gives during the shake, rattling and rolling, depending on the type of earthquake. In San Francisco and probably California in general, I reinforced masonry is illegal as it can crumble and kill people.

      @Jack_Stafford Před 2 lety +10

      Generally everywhere in America houses are wood-framed because wood is so plentiful and much cheaper, but thousands of years of settlement and expansion in England has made it more rare and expensive.
      It does make me wonder what the frame of the house in England is, the keys even brick houses in America are framed in wood and then bricked over the wood frame, only on the outside.
      I understand very historical houses would be completely made out of rock and brick, but what about any new construction in England? What do they use for a basic middle-sized family house for the frame?

      @Trifler500 Před 2 lety +1

      Steel frame is starting to become more common as well. It started in commercial construction but it's been coming to residential as well. It's costs a little more in materials, but it's much faster to assemble.

Also, ALWAYS turned on my windshield wipers instead of the turn signal at roundabouts…they were on opposite sides of what I was used to.

      I rode all over England and Wales on a motorcycle. In a car, you at least have a clue to which side of the road you need to be on, but on a motorcycle it's easy to wander into the right lane without even noticing it. Good thing British drivers are very well trained, or I wouldn't be here today.

    The reason we take a right on red, (unless indicated by a sign). is primarily to conserve fuel and also to keep traffic moving. You can also take a left on red if the street you're turning onto is one-way. The US driver has been allowed (and encouraged), to do this legally since 1977. The Arab oil embargo of 1973 being the impetus of course.

    So much fun you guys! I liked the comments about Joel trying to use his left foot from being used to driving a manual. I learned to drive on a manual but have mostly driven automatics since. Out of the 30 or so cars I've had in my life time, I've only had 3 manuals. I still enjoy driving them, though, because once you learn, you never forget. Anyway, when I started driving an automatic, it was natural for me to use my left foot for the brake and my right foot for the accelerator. That is not the recommended way, but I've been driving that way for 55 years.
