    Beaches- Big Island Travel Guide
Hapuna Beach - one of the most beautiful beaches on the big island. beautiful turqoise water with white sand. good for swimming and some snorkeling on northern end of beach.
Black Sand Beach - One of many black sand beaches in Hawaii. black sand beach with rows of coconut palms. You can see Green Sea Turtles basking in the sun here. No Big Island travel guide is complete without a stop at black sand beach.
Green Sand Beach - one of 4 green sand beaches in the world. this beach is a mission to get to. You will need 4x4 vehicle or some strong legs to hike . the sand is more of a olive color but its beautiful and worth the trip.
Magic Sands Beach- Great beach for boogie boarding or body surfing. Waves can get big check conditions before getting in. The sunsets here are amazing. make sure you stay for sunset.
Swimming With Dolphins at Kealakekua Bay
This is an amazing experience if you going to try to swim with dolphins I cant recommend BaySide Adventures enough for renting your kayaks. They are located right on the water you dont have to attach kayak to the roof of your car and drive down to the bay. the whole experience was amazing. This is at the top of the list of Big Island top things to do
    Best Poke on Big Island
Da Poke Shack- This is my favorite poke on the kona side. the poke is fresh the side dishes are delicious. The portion size are good and the price is reasonable.
Umekes Fish Market Bar and Grill- Serves great poke bowls and other Hawaiian Favorites . The poke is delicious side dishes are good. this is also a great choice for poke
Suisan Fish Market- This is the best poke on the east side of hawaii. it is located in Hilo Hawaii . The Fish is Fresh lots of choices you cant go wrong here.
Pu'uhonua O Honaunau - known as the city of refuge. This is sacred land that was used for safety. The grounds are beautiful and great place to spend a few hours walking around the grounds.
pro tip - bring your snorkeling gear go to the city of refuge and walk over to 2 steps beach for some snorkeling.
    Snorkeling -
The best snorkeling on big island in my opinion is at 2 steps beach. there is limited parking to get here early. If you looking for Things to do in kona hawaii this is one of the best.
Shave Ice - One of my favorite deserts. alway get lychee , coconut , and lilikoi with ice cream. My two favorite places for shave ice are Ululanis shave ice and Scandinavian Shave Ice. Kona Hawaii things to do has to include trying shave ice
    Waterfalls In Hilo Hawaii
Rainbow Falls - This is an 80 ft waterfall in Hilo Hawaii . It is free to visit. make sure you get here early to avoid the crowds. Any list of the top things to do in hawaii has to include chasing waterfalls.
Peepee falls- just up the road from rainbow falls. This is also were the boiling pots are located.
Akaka Falls- this is a 442 foot waterfall just north of hilo. There is a fee to visit the waterfall.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Must see places big island hawaii
This is a must see when visiting the big island. There is so much to see here and you can spend a whole day here or just a few hours. some of the highlights are crater rim drive, halemaumau crater , puu oo vent , chain of crater road, lava tubes.
    Southern Most Point Ka Lae
when it comes to the best things to do on the big island I recommend driving down to the southern most point and catching a sunset. This is a great place for fishing or cliff jumping depending on water conditions.
Malasadas - best food on big island
These are Portuguese donuts and they are delicious. If you have never had one I recommend trying them from either manuela malasadas. or tex drive in .
Waipio Valley - most beautiful placed on the big island hawaii
The waipio vallley is just an amazing place. To get to the valley you will need 4x4 vehicle or really strong legs. The drive down has a huge grade make sure you are respectful to those that live there and are going to and coming home from work.
Kiholo Bay- located in north kona. In order to get to the bay you will need to hike. this is one of those hidden gems if youre looking for what to do big island kiholo bay is great place.

WE recently spent a week on the Big Island and a 2nd week on Kauia. All the Islands have their own uniqueness to them. I enjoy them all, but I have a special fondness for the island of Hawaii. If you haven't been, find a way to get yourself over there. I would also heed the thoughtful and great advice of Redeemed Doulos in Kona.

Kona is a district approximately 60 miles long. Many visitors and newcomers confuse Kailua with Kona. Kona is bordered by the Kohala district to the north and the Ka'u district in the south. Also at the very northern end of Kona is Waikoloa and at the very southern end is Manuka (Manuka State Park, Manuka Forest). The Da Poke Shack is in Kailua. The City of Refuge or Pu'uhonua O Honaunau is in Honaunau (in Kona, not south of Kona). Waipio is pronounced why-pee-o. There is another Kailua on the island of O'ahu, hence most people refer to the Kailua in Kona as Kailua-Kona. With the current bombardment of tourists here, it's important to be respectful to the people, the culture, the language and the wildlife. Take your time, don't speed or tailgate, don't cut in line, let others go first. Aloha is not a word, it does not mean "hello" or "goodbye", it is a spiritual expression.

Book a tour through there website for date and time when you show up you sign waivers they give you the kayak at the bay and you paddle to where you can possibly see dolphins there is a rope that is attached to the kayak that you hold on to as you dive or swim around. You can also just leave the kayak for short period of time if there is no current in the water .
Hope that answers your question ..

My two best friends and I got ripped off by a cab driver in Honolulu in the 90s. WE ASKED HIM TO Take us to the mall close to the hotel (we had walked the day before and it was a long walk), he tool plus on a 20 minute ride to a run down strip mall by the airport, and said we owed him 30 bucks which was a lot of money for working class young people in 1995. The dude was hating us because we were guilty of being white visitors to Hawall. This dude looked like he was Japanese🙄. Anyway,he threatened to have his superior call the cops if we didn't pay up. Whose side do you think the cops would have been on? So we had to have this same piece of excrement drive us back to the one close to the hotel for another 20 bucks.
All these years later and it still makes me leery of locals if I ever go back, and knowing g how so many of them hate me just for being white churns my stomach. It's uncalled for,and unjustified. I loved the island, and felt a strong connection, but the possibility that more locals are like my cab driver makes me not want to commit to living their which is the desired effect I guess.

Yes this is true. It’s beautiful and fun but can be dangerous with all the rocks. Lots of sea urchins on the rocks

People are driving all over over the grass and destroying fragile landscape. Past tracks now cover pretty much all the way to the unique green sand beach..😢😢.😢😢😢

you can't get to green sands without 4 wheel drive or walk a long distance and leave your car for the rip off people.

Why is no commentary given regarding the dangers of the riptides? Shorebreaks? Due diligence!! Stay away from the turtles their protected… I dislike the way this is being shared.
