    If this is your first time viewing our videos, welcome and thank you! For some background about this series: in our years traveling together, we found our travel style involves cramming as many things into an itinerary as our body can handle. We plan a rough itinerary or list of things we want to do, see, and eat at our destination.
    Below is the original itinerary we set out to complete. In our Itinerary Challenge Series, we will see how close we get to checking off each item on our list.

Waipi'o Valley lookout is in Waip'io, not Honoka'a (we used it as the nearest town as a point of geographic reference). Kiholo State Park is not in Kamuela, but in greater Kailua-Kona area. Punalu’u Black Sand Beach is not in Ninole, but Pahala
    ***Apologies for the misspelling of Kamekameha.

    💻It was helpful to know the status of Parks & Beaches in Hawaii we intended to visit so check out the Hawaii Division of State Parks website.

    ⚠️For Waip’io Valley and Mauna Kea Summit road trips make sure to check your rental car agreements. If you do drive down to the Valley or up to the Summit cars with 4X4 are encouraged.

    Aloha,
    I run a camping company and eco tours. First thing I tell my guest is don't rush to see the entire island. Find a nice place and feel the energy and meet the people. If you rush and check the boxes than your visit will just be that like people on social media. This place is truly special and often times where ever you visit the best thing you can do is meet friends rather than visit sites. Because more than likely that local will volunteer to take you and invite you into their home to eat. So many local eats and spots everyone misses for tourist places. Come back and look me up I'll give you guys the true Hawaiian experience.

      ((EDIT - no idea why YT is striking through the response - apology for the inconvenience!) Hi Pat-Kona Nomads, we really appreciate you watching our video and sharing your thoughts--especially as someone who runs their own eco-tour & camping company on the Big Island. We completely agree with you that more time should be spend on the Big Island to really get to feel the energy and vibe of the people. Unfortunately for us, we only had 2 weeks for our first ever visit to the state of Hawaii, and we decided for us that a general overview of multiple islands would suit our initial trip. After visiting 4 different islands and getting a cursory and surface-level understanding of each of their unique qualities, we definitely want to come back and devote more time to each island individually to better understand the true Hawaiian experience. We would love to take you up on your offer to experience the Big Island from your POV -- we will let you know when we come back to visit the Big Island in the future! Once again, thank yo so much for sharing you thoughts and wishing you much joy!

    I work in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and I’m so happy you two chose to stop by and experience the beautiful rain forest up here. I’m SO sorry you got rained out and krista had a medical emergency, BUT it’s all the more reason to come visit again, my absolute favorite time to view the crater is right at or after sunrise. Since were on the east side of the island, we don’t usually get much in terms of sunset (you get better sunsets in kona) but the Sunrises are to die for! Watching the sun rise over the crater? Something you definitely have to experience once in your life!
    Happy travels you two!

    My husband and I came to the Big Island for the first time in 2017. We stayed for 11 days. The two things we said to each other on the day we flew back to Seattle were, “11 days was not enough” and “When do we get to come back for a second trip?” We just fell in love with the island. Maui, Kauai and Oahu are great, but BI is special. ❤️❤️ We just booked our 2nd trip for 16 days this time and cannot wait. 😁 Great video!

    I lived back in the very back of Waipio for a couple months, just living off the abundance of nature there. I get the feeling you can't just do that anymore, but it's even more beautiful as you get back into the valley, including a triple 1,000' waterfall dropping into a lush, swimable pool that feeds the river running through the middle of the valley. I've been all over this country, and that's probably the most beautiful spot I can think of. Visually, it may have some competition, but the climate clinches it for me.

      You won't be able to do that anymore, Waipio Valley Road actually is closed to all traffic now, except the property owners in the Valley. Said to say, but it was long overdue. Most tourist don't respect the Hawaii culture and traditions, and that includes the sacred Waipio Valley too.

    The plant you asked about is mullein. This is not very exotic, but I must tell you we have mullein here in SE Missouri, too. I am an herbalist, and I make two healing concoctions from mullein. One is ear oil from the flowers for earaches, and the other is a cough remedy from the leaves. I love the Big Island and you did a great job of showing some of the best spots. One spot very few folks seem to know about is Uncle Robert's, way down south near the Red Road and Kilauea. It's pretty indescribable, but I found it to be one of my most memorable experiences on the Big Island. There's a story that when Kilauea erupted, the folks at Uncle Robert's formed a prayer circle around their favorite place and held the lava at bay. The lava fell into the sea, and all around, but not at Uncle Robert's.

    My 3 days consisted of exploring the southern coasts black sand beaches, including Punalu'u beach, swimming with manta rays north of Kona, catching the sunrise at Paradise Cliffs then the day seeing different falls on the east side, including Akaka, driving down into Waipi'o Valley(the Jeep Gladiator we rented was an absolute must to do everything we wanted to do) seeing Hiilawe Falls, retreating back to Hilo before going to Mauna Kea for sunset and stargazing that night(Milky Way band was visible to the eye), then snorkeling at Hilo the next morning and touring the south side of the island again to see the southernmost point, then driving the Jeep to Papakolea green sand beach before trying to make it back to Volcanoes Natl park.
    I made that all one sentence because that's how it was...go, go go. Like you, I often do my trips cramming as much as I can to see all I can see. Then I try to go back with more time later. This trip was a chunk of a week on the Big Island, 2 days in Oahu and then flying to Anchorage for 8 busy days in Alaska...

    I think the plant you were asking about from your final hike is mullein. It's a tall, flowering plant with soft, fuzzy leaves that's pretty common on Hawaii. The leaves and flowers are actually edible and can be brewed into a tea, and the essential oil from its flowers is used to treat ear infections in folk herbalism.

      Congrats!
      I live on the big island. A few places I recommend is uncle Robert's down Kalapana. Across the street there is a new black sand beach. It is worth the walk. After that you guys can drive up the road to view the lava or take a lava tour boat ride. Green sand beach in south point is another spot. 4x4 is needed. Waipio valley is another must visit! As you can see if is beautiful but in person it is breathtaking. Laupahoehoe point is beautiful. If access isn't blocked off visit maunakea and maunaloa. Kona has the best beaches and hotels. Kohala is a nice town to visit. Oh and city of refuge is a nice place to see how the kanaka maoli lived.
      Like any state there is crime. Do not leave any belongings in the vehicle. If you see a group of people that look like drug addicts stay far away from them. Other than that the people here are loving. Oh and yes racism exists in Hawaii.
      Enjoy your time on the big island. Be safe and God bless. Imua!

    • @PrestonKrista
      @PrestonKrista  Před 5 lety +1

      So glad you enjoyed the video! We originally had intended to devote one night in Volcano (south-east part of the island) and one night in Kona (west side). However, because of Krista's need for urgent care, we adjusted our plans and stayed 2 nights in Kona where we drove to reach each of the further destinations like Waimea, Waipio Valley, Mauna Kea & Kipuka Pu'u Huluhulu (Hairy Hill). As for what we recommend, it really depends on how active you want to make your trip. If you want to see as much of the island then you could do what we originally planned (1 night each on the East & West side) or choose the west side as your home base for 2 nights so you don't have to unpack and repack all of your stuff and focus on just exploring all the myriad attractions on the western side of the vast island. Hope this helps with your planning for your upcoming trip in May!

    Your videos are really helpful! I am planning trip to Hawaii and am trying to copy your itinerary as much as I can... including all the food stops! I don't think I have lot of time though (9 days excluding travel from NY).. so if you had to pick 2 islands which would they be? Anything u feel you missed or should have spent more time on?

    • @PrestonKrista
      @PrestonKrista  Před 5 lety +2

      So glad to hear that you found our videos helpful and that the itinerary lists are providing value as resource for your planning! For 2 islands in 9 Days, deciding on which island to visit can depend on what you're most interested in doing as an activity when you travel. If you travel in search of good food, then we'd recommend devoting time in Oahu -- Honolulu has a diverse and evolving food scene that matches the quality and inventiveness found on major cities on the mainland. Oahu also has beautiful beaches to snorkel or learn to surf on if you're a beginner (Waikiki being one of them). If you're more inclined to explore nature, go camping or love day- or multi-day hike, then Kauai may be a good contender also. If you enjoy spending a lot of time in the water and snorkeling then Maui can be a great option - there is also great hiking at Haleakala National Park and nature expeditions along the Road to Hana as well. If you'd rather get a taste of all the micro-climates and myriad landscapes, then maybe consider Hawaii the Big Island - from snow peaks, arid deserts, lush rainforests, volcanic lavascapes, gold, black, and green sand beaches. There is great food to be had on all the islands. So I think to consider one island over the island depends on what you really enjoy as an activity when you travel. As for something we missed or should have spent more time on - it would have to be being in the water more. We didn't get many water activities like surf, snorkel, or SUP (stand up paddle board) at all--because we were enamored with the gorgeous landscapes and challenging hiking--so we'll definitely incorporate those activities when we visit Hawaii in the future. Hope this long-winded response was helpful and best of luck on your planning! You'll have an amazing time which ever 2 islands you decide to visit during the 9 days you have! We'd also love to know what you end up doing when your trip is completed too as it can help us and others with future travels to Hawaii!! :)

    Not sure if it grows there but that plant looks a lot like a Mullein herb plant. Thank you for the video. Awesome. We are going soon.

    Three days is not enough time on Hawaii Island. People don’t realize how big the island is and how much driving, and hiking/walking, you will do in order to see things, and going from one side to the other. Next time go for a week and you may still be able to do 50% of your list. Aloha.🌺

      We agree with you that 3 days is not sufficient to explore ALL that there is see, eat, and do on the Big Island -- it is indeed much bigger than we anticipated (even with watching over videos, reading about it and listening to stories from friends in preparation for this trip)! Also, we couldn't do as much as we hoped since Krista had a medical incident. Though the next time we visit the Big Island we plan to spend more time there! If you have any suggestions for places we didn't have listed in our itinerary list, we'd love to know your recommendations!

      On the west side of the island is a little known place called The Queen’s Bath, the hike to it and beyond to a bay are a several hour round trip as there are also fish ponds to explore. Very cool. In the East side is the botanical gardens at Onomea. Not far from What’s Shakin’ shake shack. Hilo town is old and funky, but built around Hilo Bay. The Queen’s gardens in Hilo are free and lovely to walk around in. It’s a Japanese themed garden. And there are many cool little towns on the East side. There is also an interesting sugar cane museum in a little town a few miles north of Hilo. Lots to see on the East side without so much extensive driving, but you’ll still be driving a lot but packing more into to your day. Lots of little VRBO rentals on the east side, too. Everything is less expensive on the East side of the Island.

      We go almost every year and have been around 10 times. We stayed a week the first trip and hated to leave. Now we usually stay at least 14-18 days. We rent a VRBO cook many meals ourselves (usually beach BBQ and have eaten with locals) this keeps the cost down and allows us to stay longer. We also always drive people back up from the Waipi’o Valley. Informative and fun video (minus the cyst-but I did watch it twice!) 😳 We have done a lot of the activities that you did. I hope you can go back. There is still a lot to see!

      @@randyamyseiber3498 That's amazing that you go back frequently! When you've gone back, do you usually stay in the same VRBO as previous years or do you try a new location each year? Being able to spend 2+ weeks at a time sounds wonderful. This is something we'd be interested in doing when we go back in the future. We'd love to spend more time on the island to get to know it better and get some more hiking under our belts (partially climbing up the road from Waipi'o Valley was excruciating yet fun -- it's really nice to hear that you also drive people back up too). We're really glad to hear you found our video informative and fun. We're also amazed you managed to watch the cyst not just once but twice -- that is commendable! >.

      Preston & Krista We typically rent different VRBOs. You can find really great deals. My Aunt and Uncle have a condo in Kona and we often stay there for free which is awesome!

    Have a plan to visit this island for 5 days. I am hoping to experience sth more hardcore. Longer hiking per day, diving into the ocean, Manta Ray, blooming lava flow. Although I have never been here, I think this island is for adventure. The most beautiful scenery of hawaii should be on Kauai island. I've been there twice.
