    'Tainted Love' Robin Nolan Trio
    Robin Nolan - Solo Guitar
    Adrian Holovaty - Rhythm Guitar
    Arnoud Vandenberg - Double Bass
This is a gypsy jazz version of 'Tainted Love' that was inspired by Marc Almond and Softs Cell's version which was a big hit in the 1980's.
Can you spot and name The Rolling Stones quote at 1:15? 😉
I recently taught a Live With Robin masterclass in the online Gypsy Jazz Club where I shared my process of taking pop songs and making gypsy jazz arrangements out of them.
Adding well known songs to your gypsy jazz repertoire will help your audience love and appreciate you and it's a hell of a lot of fun too!
    Here's what we covered:
+ Choosing Your Pop Song - There are no limits!
+ Defining The Rhythm Feel: We'll be comparing Swing, Gypsy Bossa and Bolero
+ Gypsyfying The Harmony & Chords - How to jazz up the harmony
+ 'Something' by George Harrison - Learn my gypsy jazz arrangement
+ 'And I Love Her' by The Beatles - Learn my classic arrangement
The masterclass inside The Club includes backing tracks to 'Something' and 'And I Love Her'. Playalong with me and feel how cool it is to play The Beatles gypsy jazz style!

I was joined by guitarist and Soundslice founder Adrian Holovaty who is also an expert at playing popular songs in the gypsy jazz style.

Sometimes I feel I've got to
    Run away I've got to
Get away from the pain that you drive into the heart of me
    The love we share
    Seems to go nowhere
    And I've lost my light
For I toss and turn I can't sleep at night
Once I ran to you (I ran)
    Now I'll run from you
    This tainted love you've given
I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all
    Oh tainted love
    Tainted love
Now I know I've got to
    Run away I've got to
    Get away
You don't really want it any more from me
    To make things right
You need someone to hold you tight
And you'll think love is to pray
But I'm sorry I don't pray that way
Once I ran to you (I ran)
    Now I'll run from you
    This tainted love you've given
I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all
    Oh tainted love
    Tainted love
    Don't touch me please
I cannot stand the way you tease
I love you though you hurt me so
Now I'm going to pack my things and go
    Tainted love, tainted love
    Tainted love, tainted love
    Touch me baby, tainted love
    Touch me baby, tainted love
    Tainted love
    Tainted love
    Tainted love

Swinging as usual, love the musical phrases, melodic, expressive and to the point, and those crispy octave runs too. At 1:15 is it Keith Richards and Brian Jones' riff from Paint It Black? The guitar sound almost morphs into a sitar... Kudos to the rhythmic section as well, great groove and sound overall!

The three best performances I've seen live were by 'Reverend Horton Heat', 'The Brian Setzer Orchestra'(their trio played an extraordinary Gypsy Jazz interlude set in the middle of their Christmas show) and, the best, 'The Robin Nolan Trio'. Yall' have musicality exuding from your entire beings. Pretty sure I was almost kicked out of the place when you all were playing, because each of my appendages were dancing with a different rhythm from the depth of what you guys were doing(also, I was vigorously smoking a tobacco pipe, it was legal inside back then, but probably never should have been).
Anyways, keep your hearts open to the transcendence of musicality, I know it ain't always easy to stay in that place, or even return to it with a full intensity.

There are only two examples that I can think of where an original recording of a well known song has been bettered by a cover version, one of which is the Beatles " With a Little help from my Friends," where Ringo Starr sings this great song from the Sergeant Pepper album, and Joe Cocker covers it at Woodstock a couple of years later.
The other tune is this one, " Tainted Love" made famous by Marc Almond in the eighties, and now new life, has been breathed into this version by Robin Nolan, who has made it swing in his inimitable way, there being no other guitar player in the world today who could have lifted this song into the Gypsy Jazz repertoire .
