At first I thought this lesson was too easy for me but I let it play out. As it played I realized this is an important lesson for me despite many years of me playing blues. Great lesson, thank you Tomo.

This is EXACTLY the kind of practice exercise I need - matching beat (with the metronome), improvisation (improvised lead and/or improvised variations of the shuffle), etc. I’m also using it for some pick practice by using varying picking patterns - all down picks, alternate picking, and varying picking patterns. This bassline was in one of your other videos that I started watching 2-3 years ago. This led me to doing pentatonic scale patterns until I was blue in the face. This really was the piece I needed to unlock my blues playing, and really LEARN the guitar. Your courses are great, and your advice: "Dont worry, don't compare, don't expect too fast"..... It's good to tear it back down to the skeletal frame and reignite inspiration. Go ahead and do that boring stuff - do the work. I especially appreciate the metronome 2 4 after the solid internal bass line is wood burned back into your soul. That's when the just-you solo creativity can start to flow again. When we are uninspired and stale, this is a great video to jump forward by cocking the spring backwards. Thank you, Tomo!
In order to have a fun stuff or amazing work.... there are some important things which is not all fun but when you know all the results... all of sudden, those are fun things to do! You're awesome! I enjoy watching these videos when I have time. When I first started playing a long time ago, I used the whistling technique. Even today. If I'm listening to another artist and I like the song, I'll whistle to it, but with my own unique phrases or lines to it over the melody and beat. No rules. Part of the whistling is part of my voice. So if there is certain phrases or habits that I do without much thought and whistle to, the song conforms to my style and to what I like. I'm concerned about preserving my voice and own identity when it comes to playing any instrument. It's a fingerprint to my work. Some people speak with a foreign accent, others have a southern accent and others have a northern accent. We all are communicating with our voice, but with some slight variation to deliver the message. Whistling over music with not much thought, will let your internal voice shine from within. Another tip is to record your whistles over melodies, then you can go back to them and retrieve what your inner voice was saying and transfer them over to the guitar.

What a great lesson, I have always been in favor of playing the Guitar as cleanly as possible, without effects or distortions and then adding little by little what you want, but without forgetting tonal purity. Thank you Mr. Tomo Fujita for sharing your extensive knowledge of Guitar, Music and Life. I use backing tracks from CZcams because I am a Street Musician, but it is true, the dynamics are not the same as when playing music with real people.

I once heard Carol Kaye teaching upstairs to a student at the BASS CENTER in Studio City, Los Angeles. She was teaching that exact pattern at the slow BPM. I thought, "Gee, that's a lesson?" Now years later, I understand! Later she came down and gave me one of personalized guitar pics. A good groove and solid time, slow -as you teach is very important, so thanks Tomo!

I really like your calling out the ones. I started calling out the ones after seeing a youtube about typical funk techniques, making sure to hit the root or the third on the ones and fill the space, keeping phrases short and tight (well, tight for me). My playing is way improved, when you miss one of the ones you feel the loss in power. If one could learn to do that with intent it might sound good in a tension/release type way, but would need some other element to tie it together.

You have to know your lines before you can improvise. And yes, it’s very important to be able to solidly backup the other performers. Buddy Guy yelled at John Mayer about that. He stopped playing to watch the piano player solo and Buddy yelled, “Back that mother f****r up!” He learned alright.

This is where Music theory knowledge will help to understand what is being played at base line at time 8:04 . So basically to are going in key of A from the 4th (D ) to the 5th (E) and the bass line is going D to D# to E so you are going from Cmin (D# being the minor 3rd of C ) to Cmajor (E being the Major 3rd of C). There's a mix of Amajor and Aminor and C major and Cminor. Cleverly there is also Bminor and Bmajor in the mix because of D and D# is the 3rd of B! just from music theory , B being the secondary dominant of A.
Overall its A7 which has major 3rd and flat 7.

The original Stratocaster design is so good for guitar players. I love my 1965 Fender Stratocaster. Somehow vintage Fender Musicmaster with one pickup is so special for me. I think my 1958 Fender Musicmaster.

So What's up with your voice? There is nothing wrong with your ears. The good news is you don't flee into your quiet falsetto range! The truth is, the better your ears work, the harder it is to find your natural voice range. I must ask, if you ever had much choir training or taken Classes in Choir? You need this process to play guitar better. Guitar has a volume knob! This gives you a range of dynamics. First find the volume knob in your voice! It is ok to be LOUD sometimes! Then you always want to then be soft, to make the loud stand out more. Tomo San, your pitch is perfect! The tools you learn to play guitar apply to your voice too. Practice Vibrato and tremolo with your voice. Try to copy singers you like, listen to their vowels and consonants. Coming close to mastering guitar, I still find that the most exciting and satisfying music is singing 4 or 8 part harmony with a good choir! Singing and Playing the song Little Wing at the same time is amazingly difficult, few guitar players can do this. Try it! This is The Bar! If you can do this well then your on your way! Tomo made it clear near the beginning. You can play more stylistically (less clean), but this really helps your playing and he teaches it to all his students.
