  • "Little Family"
    Creating a narrative with figures
In this watercolor video I will show you how to build a picture from "spare parts". A large Beech tree, a view of the ocean, and a family having a picnic…Some working knowledge of design helps me put the piece together. Technically we explore wet into wet technique ad mix the colors directly on the paper..
    Challenges in this Painting
    - To structure the painting around a center of interest
    - Telling an effective narrative
    - Using brushwork to create the painterly feel
    - minimize a complicated background
    - create and expressive tree and shadow and to render the figures
    Skills we build
    Graded Washes
Use design principles to build a picture out of "spare parts"
    Mixing color on the page
    Painting classic hardwood trees
Painting figures in an easy way

"This was another amazing session, Gary, and you have set up your webinar perfectly for online because we learn so much from you, and then we have the opportunity to learn more from the wonderful paintings on the Cluster Thank you Gary and thanks everyone for the beautiful posts!"

"Hi Gary, I finally had the time and energy for this practice painting. Thanks for yet another great lesson. Here are the things that I found especially challenging: Graded washes and getting the right values for the different washes. Getting the brushstrokes to be the width that I intended. Using a juicy amount of water and then getting the dry brush effects in the trees and on the lawn. Keeping my washes wet with a fan on in a hot room. But other than all of those things this practice was a piece of cake, lol. Looking forward to more practice. And since "sheltering in place" is still in full force here a still life lesson would be fantastic! Thanks so much, cheers from NYC. Stay safe and well."

"Hi Gary, since yesterday’s 9am workshop didn’t happen as planned, i followed along with the video you sent today. Great lesson on distance and trees! I love trees and usually manage to overwork them while trying to make them look interesting. These techniques will help i hope :) Thanks so much,"

Thank you for this very spontaneous- feeling painting. You have a style of teaching that suits me very well; a relaxing voice and an explanation not only of all the design elements and techniques but also the feelings and emotions behind your watercolour art . I’ve learned a lot. Thank you.

Enjoyed your painting and the tips on gradation and mixing on the paper. I love the variety of greens, saturated and desaturated a bit. Thank you for sharing your advice, it was easy to follow.

Gary, as it usually happens I have enjoyed this last video. Love your style and straightforward approach. However, I must mention to you how nice it was to watch your earlier videos. Now you have music as a background "noise", making it very difficult to understand what you're saying. why follow the trend and be just you. You have a nice tone of voice and is pleasing to follow. If we want music, there're other channels for that. We're here to see you and learn to take the more brave and calligraphic approach.

I think the music is a quite nice touch, fits the mood pretty well.

Thanks for the feedback Angel - I am always experimenting with presentation and mood - I know my voice is not always clear - I tend to mumble as I paint.
