The filler of Dragon Ball's anime is for some the ultimate blemish on this long and highly acclaimed series. And seeing as I have already seen and reviewed the entire series as well as its films and sequal series/spin offs... all that remains is the filler! So I figured why not check this out and see if there's anything special hidden away in here! Was I surprised? Let's find out!

I enjoyed the heavenly training and wedding dress "arcs" while blind-watching OG Dragon Ball during the pandemic that I legit had no idea they were filler until a friend told me about it later. They felt so naturally-spliced into the story of the canon. Great stuff and happy you enjoyed them almost as much as I did.
Now if only Chi-Chi got respect like this in the series in the modern day...

Same! I had no idea those two arcs were filler until a few years ago, when I went back for a rewatch and was more intimately familiar with that was in the manga.
Personally, I'd still headcannon them in to the story regardless. They do so much to flesh out those particular chapters of Goku's journey (I mean, it's insane that their wedding really wasn't shown in the manga looking back, not even as an epilogue).

I think the OG Dragonball Anime in general did a really good job incorporating filler because, 1)none of it is too long, & 2) most if not all the filler fit naturally within the story. After watching the anime one of the only things I thought could be filler was the Dr.Slump crossover, and It was a surprised that was actually in the manga.

With the exception of the hit thing all the filler is slice of life and comedy, and it plays to it benefits as non canon material it has no ability to change the characters or the plot, but they do have the ability to make you see other sides of the characters like Goku taking care of Pan, or he just walking around and working as a farmer, it's a thing that the manga or the canon will not touch, and that the anime can totally use to it's advantage

8:47 My jaw dropped when you revealed Toshiki Inoue was the writer - he's a prominent writer in Japan, but is known a lot more for his Tokusatsu work.

  • @jorda8915

Toshiki Inoue is (in)famous in the Tokusatsu circles for his work on the Kamen Rider and Super Sentai series. He either writes well loved and fan favorite seasons like Faiz and Jetman or makes work that are.... divisive at best, like the latter half of Hibiki or the Faiz light novel . I love his work for how he is able to flesh out his characters and making even some of the biggest jerks somewhat likeable (or at least you love to hate them). But when its clear he doesn't really care too much about the material, you get a bunch of just weird shit happening. As much as people love Faiz (like I do) no one is going to defend the story or the ending of it. You're either going to get home runs or absolute misses with Inoue and I wouldn't have it any other way. Donbrothers, his latest work is also one of my personal favorites of his but its also so ludicrous and insane but you get a clear feeling of him loving writing every second of it. I would honestly recommend his work in toku if you like character focused stuff. Although I do have to state that if you hate the dramatic irony of characters not talking things out over what is usually just a big misunderstanding for the majority of the season you will HATE his shit.

If you want a great example of the terrible effects of bad filler, just look at Blue Exorcist. Toshiki Inoue is perhaps the most unhinged writer in all of tokusatsu. His most iconic characters are a psychopathic serial killer and a manipulative sociopath who's supposed to be a superhero; both are from a superhero franchise made for children and selling toys. The fact that he used to work on Dragon Ball is a bit of a surprise, but not weird considering how long he's worked in Toei.

i absolutely tend to love filler episodes, even if i'll always admit that they CAN be boring:
Filler is where they get to breathe, let the events of the past take effect, evolve as a person outside of high stress events, relationships evolve, and a whole other massively long list of character/interpersonal developments.
    filler is the pizza's crust.
and people who refuse to eat crust are monsters.
    mic. drop.

The first time I watched the original Dragon Ball (i never read manga) I thought the training part on the Lookout with Popo was part of the story and I was surprised that it was a filler episode in the way that it actually provided a great addition and didn't get in the way of the main story like some of the other not-so-tonally-appropriate ones stories...

Toshiki Inoue wrote a bunch of the Dragon Ball anime, including some iconic episodes like the Tenshinhan vs Yamcha fight! He's also very prolific in anime in general (most relevant here, wrote a lot of Dr. Slump episodes) as well as live-action TV, most famously superhero works like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, for which he writes...memorably, and with a similar "fuck it, we ball" attitude that's on display in the "one giant Dragon Ball" episode here.

Toshiki Inoue has an insane legacy of work in Toei. He's mainly known for his work on Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, but more notoriously for how his work fluctuates between extreme peaks and valleys of success and failure.
It should be said though, his writing on Chojin Sentai Jetman is responsible for saving the Super Sentai franchise from cancellation at the time. Its huge success would lead to the creation of Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, aka the show that would be adapted as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. He also recently returned to Sentai for the first time in many years with Avataro Sentai Donbrothers, which ended up one of the most successful (and absolutely unhinged) Sentai seasons after almost a decade of steady decline in ratings and toy sales.
Also fun fact, the theme song (as well as the ending and several other insert songs) for Jetman was performed by Hironobu Kageyama - the lead singer of Cha-La Head Cha-La for Dragon Ball Z.

    1. Garlic Jr may come off as lame but it's the first time Gohan plays defender of earth roll, plus the arc has og characters fight like Chichi and I'm always happy to see of DB characters fight.
    2. More Frieza and Goku fighting is insane haha but can't be mad at all about it.
    3. Ultimate Gohan lasting longer against Super Buu after Gotenks was badass, it really showed how strong Ultimate Gohan is.
    4. Base Vegito "breaking in" his body was superbly animated

I do wonder what Mark thinks of the filler section in which Goku goes to find the Ultra Divine Water. One of his criticisms of the Demon King Piccolo arc was Goku getting a mostly free power up. I do think the anime makes this part of the story a lot better, as Goku actually has to work to get to the Ultra Divine Water. And this whole section has a bit of an "Aragorn has to travel to the Paths of the Dead" feel to it.

I don't know if other people will share my thought, but i would add 2 points to the Wedding Dress arc based solely on the sentimentalism of a widowed father (?) protecting the most precious present his daughter's deceased mother left for her, i think we (Mark and i, as well as many other DB fans) are in an age in which sentimentalism like that, can get really deep, specially if you also think that marriage, in the religious way, is a goal in your life and not a trap, specially a type of strong marriage like Goku and Chichi's.

There are benefits to filler (when it's done well). I typically enjoy the type that shows characters during their off days, y'know, seeing what they're doing when not constantly fighting.
Though ultimately I am glad that most anime nowadays don't really do Filler after switching from "Forever Shows" to seasonal. There are irregularities that show up, and the filler produced from those sure are... something. (I think like... Boruto is almost entirely comprised of filler...)

My favorite filler arc is the heavily training work. It goes from Goku, trying to dodge lightning to Goku learning how to fish to Goku also learning how to use spiritual energy for master Roshi’s master master Mito. However, the cat was the fillers. I hate the fact that they may TN shout to Yuma and Killen do a visit a place that had a volcano that was erupted and they were trying to climb Karen tower. But the best best part about this arc is the fact that I learned what Pope was trying to teach Goku how to become a stone you have to be with your mind. You have to use your mind to see not just with your eyes it relies more than just your eyes to see.
