Tetris Attack VS Panel De Pon - Version Differences

  • Welcome to version differences! The series where we take two or more of the same game from different regions or versions and compare and contrast!
    Today we're looking at Panel De Pon/Tetris Attack. This was what happened when a game was "too Japanese-y" back in the day. People who complain about censorship in Fire Emblem games would have a field day with this.

    There's one more huge difference! They actually bumped up the CPU difficulty a LOT in Tetris Attack. In Panel de Pon the CPU goes for mostly combos with very few intentional chains. In Tetris Attack the CPU goes a little slower, but it goes for skill chains rather than mostly combos. It's a lot harder to fight.

    • @yellowlemonPenguin
      @yellowlemonPenguin Před 4 lety +13

      They also clear panels while the garbage blocks are clearing unlike Panel de Pon where they will sorta freeze in place until the block is fully dissolved.

    • @stechuskaktus8318
      @stechuskaktus8318 Před 4 lety +6

      I noticed the difference but couldn't put my finger on it. But yeah, there really are these massive chains in tetris attack that i didn't encounter in Panel de Pon. Yet I wouldn't say that makes it much harder necessarily, because these huge garbage blocks also give you quite some time to arrange your existing blocks while the garbage blocks get revealed, allowing you to create pretty good chains in return.

    • @AJR-zg2py
      @AJR-zg2py Před 4 lety +4

      Yep. Noticed this after playing Panel de Pon on the Switch's SNES Online service. Tetris Attack is FAR more aggressive and that was something I was missing in Panel de Pon. I noticed it went for combos more instead of chains.

    • @stechuskaktus8318
      @stechuskaktus8318 Před 4 lety +8

      @@AJR-zg2py Welp, you got me to dig out my good old SNES Tetris Attack again. All this time I've been wondering if I'm just out of shape or if Panel de Pon is actually harder. And yep, I beat Tetris Attack first try with hardly any difficulties, yet I still have to get through Panel de Pon once. It's true that TA CPU is more aggressive with chains, however PdP CPU is considerably more tenacious. I've had several PdP matches way over 10 min (which is as far as the timer goes), Bowser gave up in less than 4 minutes like everyone else in TA.

    • @OnePieceObsessed
      @OnePieceObsessed Před 3 lety +4

      @@stechuskaktus8318 Exactly. I tried several dozen times to do a no-loss Panel de Pon run on very hard. No dice, though I once made it to Cordelia. Then I tried Tetris Attack and did it on the second try. Actually I used a new controller which I just was not accustomed to at all, otherwise I'm perfectly sure I might have done it on first try. (Lost to Bowser.) However, I have no controller issues on PdP. I just lost dozen times because these opponents are flat out harder to beat and just play in a completely different league.
      The longest match I had and actually won was against Neris with 6+ minutes. I also fought Selen for 8+ minutes or Phoenix for 10+ minutes before I finally got overwhelmed.
      I guess it's a really clever move - especially looking at a casual player audience - to make the Tetris Attack baddies look more intimidating on a superficial level with their chains, whereas they are in fact infinitely easier. However, I will not give up - even if I have to go for it a thousand times!
      Edit: Finally vanquished the Great Goddess Cordelia after a 6:40 minutes long match. Feels so satisfying...

The first was a constant harasser of Yoshi throughout the game, the next 2 were the World 3 and 4 bosses, and Bowser, basically started the giant Bowser trend in Mario games, BUT WAS STILL IN THE GAME. The rest of the "helper" characters from Lakitu to Raphael The Raven were either common enemies or in Raph's case the World 5 boss, in YI, ALL OF THEM. It’s a crying shame this version will probably never see the light of day again only because Nintendo decided to license the Tetris name in 96. How difficult could it be to change the name on the title screen and be done with it? If Mike Tyson’s Punch Out could be changed to Punch Out (and remove MT) so can Tetris Attack. Call it Yoshi’s Puzzle League or something.

    I recently played Panel De Pon on Switch SNES online. I'm Not usually good at puzzle games, but I still have a lot of fun with it though, and I also love the music. This is coming from someone who's favorite Mario character is Yoshi, and do love SMW2: Yoshi's Island, it is honestly quite a shame they replace Panel de Pon characters with Yoshi's Island characters in International release. Panel De Pon characters could've been another long lasting Nintendo IP, even in the western Market. They have really cool designs that helps the game's chatm and very nice lore proven by the vs story. Not to mention this is supposed to be their game, not Yoshi. Still the international still did a really good job the Yoshi's Island characters blend with the game, and that's cool. But it just sucks that this actually mean Panel De Pon franchise is sacrificed for it, the same way how Super Mario Bros 2 USA sacrifice the Doki Doki Panic's main characters. Then again that just shows how Mario can destroy opportunities of potential IPs because obviously when you slap Mario in the game, it always gauranteed to sell greatly no matter what. That's what happen in Tetris Attack :) Have trouble with demographic? slap a Mario franchise on it as a solution. Interesting how they work around international releases.

      If you look at the map screen in 5:44, you can see those green hills with eyes from Super Mario Bros. 3. They are in both versions which may explains that Panel de Pon was originally meant to be a Yoshi's Island theme puzzle game to begin with. It wouldn't use any Mario related content if it was to be its own original game. Those hills with eyes, only Mario games had those.

    • @GalaxyWisp
      @GalaxyWisp Před rokem +1

      @@VOAN Wait, so then that means "Tetris Attack" (or rather Panel de Pon Starring Yoshi or Yoshi's Panel de Pon either title should get the Tetris company off Nintendo's back) was the REAL game!?!
      That explains why Panel de Pon felt like a pale imitation when I played it (especially with the sprite work on VS mode, because there was clearly WAAAY more effort put into Yoshi and friends in-game looks compared to Lip and her random fairy entourage), I'd love it if Nintendo would just release this version under a different name! Between the more fitting flower field stage for Flutter (NOT Wiggler like the video claims even if that IS her previous form) compared to the basic crystal palace, the improved difficulty of VS mode (I beat the true final boss Cordella on my first try and looking back at the footage it was simply because she made 3 stupid mistakes in a row and didn't have time to make up for them), improved control and sound (playing both back-to-back there was no comparison, the control just feels too slick on Panel de Pon that I kept overshooting the blocks I wanted to switch regularly) and of course the fact THAT version is actually translated and has ALL the modes, there's just no question which one is the superior game (and that's not even counting the super-catchy title remix from "Yoshi's Island" that I love to this day or the fact that if you wait through all the demos you get a cool series of screens having ALL the characters talking about themselves and explaining their stance on the situation complete with fun quirks, personality, and even a few creative uses of size fonts for the text every now and again)!

She would have been very excited to learn that her favourite game actually had a different look than the one she's used to! Our head-to-heads were very intense because we were both really good. Like me, the first thing she'd notice is that Panel de Pon's CPU is nowhere near as aggressive as the SNES version lol American version chains more; Japanese version combos more... chains are harder to fight against and when you hear the opponent's character make their noise when you get a combo, it ramps up the intensity. Great times. RIP Mom, 1963-2009.

    One other thing about the options menu in Tetris attack (thus inaccessible in Panel de Pon) is you can modify player input to be AI controlled, both 1st and 2nd inputs. This means you can actually battle an AI that is harder then "very hard" Bowser/Cordelia in the 2P mode (Or watch 2 AIs fight). You can also watch the AI do single player modes this way if you want. This was obviously for testing purposes, but when I found it as a kid I thought it was some secret hard-mode or something since the AI on the highest (not normally accessible) difficulty usually gets like x10+ chains on a regular basis.

  • @VOAN
    @VOAN Před 2 lety

    One new thing I just notice when re-watching this again and playing Panel de Pon on NSO. I believe Panel de Pon was always meant to use the Yoshi's Island characters/theme to begin with. At first I thought there wouldn't be anything to distinguish it from Tetris Attack but if you look carefully at the the map screen comparison at 5:44 where Lip/Yoshi is standing on the floating island, on the flooded valley below, there are those green hills with eyes from Super Mario Bros. 3. They are both in Tetris Attack and Panel de Pon so yeah I believe this game was originally intended to be a Yoshi's Island puzzle game at one point and was just re-swap for Lips and gang to be Panel de Pon for the Japan audience but then got swap back to the Yoshi's Island theme for NA. It makes no sense for those SMB3 hills with eyes to be there in Panel de Pon if this wasn't intended to be a Mario/Yoshi related game in the first place.

  • @Betasnip
    @Betasnip Před 2 lety +1

    3:54 the critter from Panel de Pon was switched with Fly Guys and Goonie Bird from SMW2:Yoshi's Island.
    4:03 Critter was swapped with Grinder from SMW2: Yoshi's Island.
    4:07 The Kappa was replaced with Claw Daddy from SMW2:Yoshi's Island.
    Also how the CPU plays the game in VS mode. I've noticed it more in super hard mode ( when you start a new VS mode move the cursor over HARD. Press Up, L, R and A buttons at the same time and the color background goes from orange to red. works the same in Panel de Pon too). The CPU in Tetris Attack focuses more on chain attacks. While in Panel de Pon, the CPU speed is faster and they try to overwhelm you by making combos.

There is also a "time" bug in Puzzle Collection GC where, where a minute in game is actually a few seconds longer than an actual minute. There was also a Dr. Mario & Puzzle League cart released for the GBA which isn't too bad, at least much better than the DS version though! The GBC Pokemon Puzzle Challenge is really close to the original Panel de Pon, and is my preferred way to play the game still today. The one recently released within Animal Crossing Welcome Amiibo (called Animal Crossing Puzzle League) is a total mess and the physics are all messed up.
