Chuck Negron was born on June 8, 1942, in Manhattan, New York City, to Charles Negron, a Puerto Rican nightclub singer, and Elizabeth Rooke.[4] When Negron was five years old, his parents divorced. Negron and his twin sister, Nancy, were raised by their mother, who placed them in a daycare facility while she supported her young children. Though Negron refers to this facility as an orphanage, it was a mansion in the Bronx that contained a swimming pool, gymnasium, arts and crafts and more. The facility did house some long-term residents, though this did not include Negron and his sister.

A Bullfrog, down New Orleans way. Is what is known as a Wine'o. That's why he always had some mighty fine wine. Jeremiah was a real person. The writer of the song would see him often. That's how he came up with the first few lines of the song.

First time I ever heard this song 1970, Place: 6th grade school room located in south Elementary School, Fairborn Ohio (right next to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base), in that 6th grade room is a young blond boy obviously not happy with the world, you see just a couple days before he was soaking his feet in the sand at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. HE had been swept up in paradise and dumped in the Arm pit of North America.

You may notice that the incredible drummer they have is a Black Canadian gentleman from Calgary Alberta named Floyd Sneed. He is a direct descendent of Parson Sneed who led a large group of African Americans from Colorado to Alberta Canada after the Civil War and they formed one of the largest Black Communities in Canada at a place called Amber Valley.
In the early 1960s - Floyd's older sister Maxine married a guy who had a band. Tommy and Maxine bought Floyd his first drum set and he joined Tommy's band called The Calgary Shades. The name was coined by Tommy as a joke on the racial make-up of the band. Tommy was half Chinese and half white, two other members were Black, and one was aboriginal. Tommy and Maxine had a daughter named Rae Dawn.
They went to Vancouver BC and Tommy opened a club and the band got to be pretty popular. They met an African American named Bobby Taylor in LA and he joined the band as the new lead singer.
The newly named Bobby Taylor and The Vancouvers did a song written by Tommy (who played guitar in the band) called "Does Your Mama Know?" Supremes members Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson heard the song and got Barry Gordy of Motown to sign the band. "Does Your Mama Know?" became a big hit for the group (#34) and they toured the US.
While in Chicago - they were impressed by a family band who opened for them called The Jackson Five. Bobby Taylor brought the band to Motown where they were signed and he mentored the group and produced their first two albums. Yes - the Jackson Five were discovered and brought up in the business by Bobby Taylor - not Dianna Ross as the publicity machine later claimed.
The band sort of fell apart and Tommy met a guy named Cheech Marin who was sent by his dad (who was a captain in the LA police dept.) to Vancouver to avoid the Vietnam Draft. They formed the comedy duo Cheech and Chong. Yes - Canadian Tommy Chong was a guitar playing Motown songwriter before he became a legendary comedian. He and Maxine's Daughter - Rae Dawn Chong became a pretty popular actress, and Floyd Sneed went down to LA where he was discovered playing drums in a bar by Chuck Negron and Danny Hutton and asked to be the drummer for the band they were forming which became the legendary Three Dog Night.
    It's a small world - ain't it?

doing a little research on this song, the original lyrics were "Jeremiah was a prophet", but Three Dog Night changed to a "bullfrog"; so based on that, the song is a reference to "Jeremiah" from the Old Testament in the Christian Bible.

Three Dog Night scored a succession of 21 hit singles, including eleven Top Tens, and twelve consecutive gold albums from 1969 to 1975, thanks to the slick, sometimes soulful vocal harmonies of singers Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells and an excellent ear for quality material. The band was noted for its creative arrangements and interpretations, and their cover choices gave exposure (and royalties) to several talented songwriters: Nilsson ("One"), Laura Nyro ("Eli's Coming"), Randy Newman ("Mama Told Me (Not to Come)"), Hoyt Axton ("Joy to the World"). They took their name from an Australian expression describing low nocturnal temperatures in the outback (the colder the night, the more dogs needed to keep warm while sleeping). Laura Nyro is one of my favorite artists. Her voice may be an acquired taste because most of her songs charted with other singers. STONY END for Streisand, WEDDING BELL BLUES for The 5th Dimension and ELI'S COMIN' performed by Three Dog Night.

As is mentioned elsewhere, this song was written by Hoyt Axton, mostly known as a folk singer. However, what people don't know is he wrote songs for lots of groups. Though he was considered primarily a country singer-songwriter, his songs crossed genres quite often. In fact, he wrote Never Been To Spain, another Three Dog Night (and others) hit song. He wrote a HEAVY (i.e. dark) song about drugs for the group, Steppenwolf called, "The Pusher", which was featured in the movie Easy Rider (1969).
He was also in a LOT of movies, the most famous would be, Gremlins, as Randall "Rand" Peltzer, the father of the lead character, Billy Peltzer.
BTW, Three Dog Night refers to the 3 main singers, but is a reference to (supposedly) an old Aborigine custom. It seems that when a traveler in Australia stopped to sleep on a cold night, he would dig a hole in the ground to sleep in, to keep the wind off of him. He would also sleep with a dog to for warmth, but if it was especially cold, he might sleep with 2 dogs, and if it was REALLY cold ... yep, you guessed it, 3 dogs. So, the expression, "it's a 3 dog night" became popular to mean, "it's REALLY cold out", similar to words and sayings like, "threshold", "it's raining cats and dogs" (another great story there), "dog-day afternoon", etc.

Yep - Hoyt wrote a lot of songs about drugs because, sadly, they consumed his life.

@@BobSoltis1 Yeah, I always liked him. He seemed like such a nice guy. I could tell that The Pusher must have come from REAL life, and wasn't just something some thought up.

The Pusher was written in 1964 , Stephenwolf wasn't formed until late 1967 although John Kay had been using it in his solo act since his first trip to California. Another anti drug song of Hoyt's that was written with Steppenwolf in mind was Snowblind Friend , about the loss of a mutual friend of Hoyt and John Kay .

@@bobbrinkerhoff3592 I appreciate the extra information and yeah, I misspoke. I don't know what I was thinking at the time.
I think I just worded it poorly because I had no actual foreknowledge about whether it was written for them or not ... and that wasn't actually my point. I just meant it WAS a hit for them, and he wrote it.
      Thank you for the clarification.

I was a teenager-late teens-when this song came out. I loved this song. My mother was crazy about it-she sang it for years and it became one of her favorites! LOL

Three Dog Night was a hit machine. My favorite of theirs is "Black and White", which is about the fact we are all God's children, and that skin color is irrelevant.
The group's name comes from the fact that in Australia, the aborigines huddle with dogs on cold nights to keep warm. On severely cold nights, they huddle with three dogs, hence a "three dog night".
