  • The original song can be found as a one-minute instrumental on "Family Tree" called "Sketch 1". A longer version of this song can be found on several Nick Drake bootlegs.
    Here's a mini-bio of Scott Appel :
"Spellbound years ago by the haunting images found in the music of English folksinger Nick Drake, Scott Appel began a correspondence with the late artist's parents, Rodney and Molly Drake. Their faith in Appel's discreetness and their awareness of his empathy with Drake's music paid off handsomely for the New Jersey-based guitarist, as he was one of the few musicians given access to Drake's mythical and fiercely protected private recordings."
In 1989 Appel released Nine of Swords on the Kicking Mule labelas KM-343, which included six Nick Drake covers (including Far Leys) and also some Drake-influenced pieces. It was reissued in 1995 by Schoolkids Records.

Wow! This is one of the most beautiful examples of acoustic finger style guitar I have ever heard. I am a player of 40 years and Nick Drake is my favorite artist. I would not like just any player to change his music because his style is so unique, but this is a level of playing that is pure genius. May both artists rest in peace. They gifted the world with music that was very special.

We All have Scott to thank for spending years labouring to find the strange Altered tunings + chords that Nick played but never wrote down. R.I.P Scott. Nick, Rodney and dear Molly.

I corresponded with Scott Appel some years before his untimely death. i think he would have been uplifted by the comments left here and i for one still think this is and will always be the most visionary and creative rendition of 'Far Leys'...Anyone with the craft can work out the song and mimic ND's way of playing it, but it takes more than that to create something fresh and to 'extend' the original rather like a translation from another language...

Scott was the best guitarist I have ever known. I was fortunate to have been there for the creation of some of his "Nine of Swords" LP which this is on. It is time for a greatest hits for this brilliant player. arranger, composer.

They say that to create this track, Mr. Appel actually used some of Mr. Drakes guitarwork on one of the home tapes at Far Leys, in which case what we hear here is something ghostly~ the then still extant Mr Appel playing together with the departed. May they both rest soundly!

Hearing this for the first time as I've been reading the Trevor Dann book about Nick. Splendid.

This beautiful tone was due, outside his talent, to the guitar used by Scott Appel : a Fylde. A guitar made by a British strings maker, Roger Bucknall. He is very talented and all his guitars have a very special sound.
