there is something particularly exceptional to see these dances and songs, i can feel the pride and strength in their faces when waving hands but above all the body language that communicates many things. Perhaps who more than us "ITALIANS" can understand this language? we speak different languages but as if it were a thread of DNA that connects us .. I love New Zealand .. hug all of you

Man. Marie Edwards. Haven’t heard her name in years. Korongata was my stake growing up too. My favorite waiata. Can’t remember if I learned this in Hastings or at PCC in Laie, Hawaii with Uncle Tommy in the early ‘80s. Now I live in Southern California. Ngsti Kahungunu proud.

Unfortunately this 2024 Coalition govt has set about removing any and all traces of the indigenous Māori culture by reinterpreting the Treaty of Waitangi - an agreement between Māori & the Crown - WITHOUT MĀORI INPUT.
The uniqueness of our Māori culture sets Aotearoa NZ apart from the world.
We would merely be another European outcrop without MĀORI.

This song was composed by Tommy taurima and is to do with the courtship I believe between rongomaiwahine and kahungunu. He wrote this waiata while he was in Hawaii as a teacher of hula longing for home so he probably got permission to use the tune while he was there.
