Whenever I see a product in a spray bottle which warns that it is problematic if inhaled, or gets in the eyes or on skin, I think: "Why is this not a gel formulation in a precision applicator?"
Mould Magic is a gel and works great.
LOL, my dad invented it :-) He turned Genolite into a gel formula back in the 60's. Back in the day when you were allowed proper chemistry without skull and crossbones on everything.
I've still got some Jenolite in the garage which probably dates back to the 60s.
Your old video of cheap bleach soaked into toilet paper or kitchen roll and left on top of the silicone for a few hours has worked for us time and time again!!
Yeh, my missis does the same with cotton wool. Works a treat.
It's a bit of a faff though.
Don't spill it on your chrome tapes like I did though! The bleach stains the chrome and can't be removed.
And a bottle of bleach is a lot cheaper, but just as effective.
It's a great solution, but the mould always comes back eventually because it grows roots into the silicon and the bleach only really reaches the surface.
It's a ruddy faff but if you cut the silicone out and replace it cleanly, you can fix it for good.
A very cheap and extremely effective solution is to boil a kettle of water, gingerly pour it over the mouldy silicone areas, and then drizzle neat bleach over the top. The heat causes the bleach to act almost instantly and gets in surprisingly deep. 10-15 minutes and the mould is all gone. Ventilate well, however!
Thanks, will try this
@@summerseveningdid it work?
If you keep doing videos like this you will be keeping me out of a night job
Great stuff Roger đ§±đ§±đđœ
What a great channel this is. I'm in the trade and have learned a lot from these guys. Top of their trades đ
They are absolutely brilliant!
So much down to earth advice.
HG mold remover foam spray is also superb. The foam sticks well to vertical surfaces and given 30 mins removes light mold. Another tip I was given - never lick your finger when smoothing silicone you are effectively putting germs straight into the silicone from day one.
Yeah that's what I use along with clear jointing tape. You can't see it and it stops the mould growing back for longer. Plus it stops any leaks in the silicone.
Fantastic stuff, agree
Actually, couldn't get hold of any after about a year of not needing it. Purchased the Killrock mould spray and that seems to have worked pretty well too
Great advice as usual Roger đđ
Love †your channel
Thanks mate
Nice one Roger, another great video. Astonish mould remover works really well, and only costs about ÂŁ1. Its not preventative though, so not a full fix.
So glad I found your channel. Just re-sealed my shower tray using your video and now ordered the Dryzone. Feel like a Pro đđȘđ»
Welcome aboard!
There's a discussion to be had around how safe and possibly carcinogenic biocides like this are. Especially given that remnants will remain in the shower area in some form or another.
Heard you on radio 2 recently and again today. You come across brilliant. New fan here
Thank you very much.
Thick bleach and a paintbrush, repeat as necessary (every 2-3 months).
I've worked in lots of big houses and they suffer from mold just like the rest of us. In fact the old ones probably more so.
I agree, I have noticed this, its because their cleaners do the same easy spray and wipe every time they visit. As a decorator somehow it is MY job to deal with mould
My parents fit into this category and my mum does her own cleaning at 69. Their houses have always been hospital grade clean, even when my sister and I lived at home. My dad is 70, has suffered MND for over 20 years and only recently bought a mobility scooter so he can keep doing his own gardening, âto keep active.â He deals with extreme nerve pain, can hardly walk or talk but continues to be as independent as ever (although he recently had to sell his farm and boat because it was just too unsafe to continue). We may not see eye-to-eye but Iâm so proud of them both.
make a stiff but pliable paste with thick bleach and bicarbonate of soda. apply with the back of a teaspoon, pushing the paste onto any black mould
leave for a couple of hours, or overnight, the rinse away. spotless and bright!
works a treat, especially on black mouldy silicone, which most proprietary cleaners donât shift
and it will stay away for months and months, if not permanently.
costs pennies, not particular toxic
My silicone needs replacing. I'll be sure to purchase a good quality tube.
Thanks!
Roger, also, been having heating on all day and up until 11pm but still get condensation on windows. Any suggestions?
Cheers for this video, I will re-silicone my bath and buy this product, thanks for the tip
Best thing for those tiles is to take them out and start again, they don't line up and they are definitely not flat
Some home owners arenât that bothered about millimetre perfect tiles and grout, theyâve got more important things to spend their time on.
@@gdfggggg well be that as it may. Those tiles are still a bodge job
@@Alexander_l322 well, if theyâd have paid a professional to do it then yes. Although, Iâd assume theyâre not Leaking and most people arenât spending their time on their hands and knees with a microscope checking for inconsistencies.
Did you miss his statement of. This is a fix for people that donât have money. If they had the money to get proper tile work done they would probably get proper ventilation installed into their shower, removing the mold problem.
Also if this is a rental who exactly cares about the tile work?
No so easy to replace without destroying plasterboard walls though.
Roger, fantastic to hear you on Jeremy Vine's show again yesterday on Radio 2, and with your own jingle!
Have a great Christmas mate.
Yes that was good fun hearing that. I might get another gig if they have invested in a jingle. Happy Christmas to you too
Unfortunately does not seem to ship to the states, but informative as always.
Will this work on the ceiling above?
I use forever white silicone, this product seems to be ahead of the game with mould
I have used that as well, good product
Will definitely give Dryzone Mould Remover and Prevention Kit a try.
When, you clean the mold do you reseal it and caulk it?
Hi , what do think about Passive Ventilation systems? Do you think they work, is it worth having one installed in a home?
Do you need to replace tile? If, you keep getting mold in shower.
I wonder what effect would be , mixing a small amount of strong bleach in the grout before it is applied
Try Cillet Bang mould remover...very strong...very quick. Test before use on paint, can use but be quick. ÂŁ1.00 a bottle...Pound Land!
Amazing stuff, never had a mould problem since I found cillet bang
@@bigend07 Now you are a convert!!!
@@Hyde999100 been using it the last two years amazing stuff đ
Yeh the black mould one is really good, just spray leave for 20 mins & rinse off no scrubbing required.
All my fittings are fibreglass, not ceramic. Will the surface be affected please ?
Roger. How about a 6 month trial of a few different silicone sealants to see which brands are actually up to the job?
Difficult to do and most people know that Dow and Forever White are good. The ÂŁ2.00 tube is likely to be rubbish
Everbuild forever white?
Great channel, I use small amounts of bleach soaked into rolled up tissue and stick to the sealant. Works a treat.
I have silicone with a slight tint of yellow thats only a year old. Does this indicate poor quality silicone? I have not used the above method on said silicone.
We have a video on that very method.
Fortunately, I don't have any silicon in my bathroom to go mouldy apart from the seal around my Dallmer shower drain.
hi we are just putting in a new shower room and are fitting shower panels instead of tiles. should we use elements board first or aqua board ?
You can put the panels on anything provided the joints of the board are sealed. It would not harm to use moisture resistant plasterboard, maybe with a coat of tanking fluid from Everbuild as belt and braces.
Heard you on the radio today. Great advice as always. You mentioned an app to see the heat escaping from your home. Do you have a link for the apps you would recommend? Cheers
It was an infra red camera that plugs into the bottom of your phone, The one I was using was the Topdon TC001. It is only for windows or an android phone but they are making one for I phones. It was dead easy to use but I am sure it is not as accurate as the ÂŁ1,000 models from Flir. That said it did show up a lot of cold spots particularly window frames.
Dow's my go to and mapei.
I love Mapei products, their grout is the best in the business.
All due respect to this video, but is he actually spraying the shower?? As when it shows him spraying, there anit no actually spray coming out of the bottle or is it my eyes playing tricks on me ?.
Home owners should be using a window squeegee to wipe down shower surfaces after use, it takes seconds and will help stop mould forming
I wipe the walls down and put a dehumidifier in there, open the vents and crack the window open, still got mould around the window, I feel its now in the plaster board, new build only 5 years old, built to latest specs, but probably with the cheapest materials they could find, using a dehumidifier and having the vents open, still have to wipe every window down and keep cleaning around the windows to remove mould, modern builds are rubbish.
Just found your channel taken in as much as I can .
Do you still take on projects? ⊠?
Iâm gonna be converting a brick barn /so brick barn bungalow . Got to have a metal roof. /zinc and all the new rules and regs have to do something along the lines of solar power, heat pump system (not really struck on pump system idea) ideally, would prefer to over insulate the barn and hopefully get away with solar power along with the traditional method going for underfloor heating, just interested to see the best and cost-effective ways Re solar, or any other suggestions.. âŠđđ»
Must be good. The radio 2 plumber says it's good! Got his own jingle too. Where do you go now you've climbed Radio "Everest"?!
Dry everything off with a microfiber towel after a shower, takes 1 minute. Job's a good un.
I fit bathrooms and tell all my customers this. Vents to pull out the humidity, soft towels to mop up excess surface water, keep wet towels, clothes and floor mats out of bathroom too.
I haven't found anything to get rid of mold in the bathtub just above and around the drain area. Unfortunately the tub has Ben painted previously. I've tried everything. Ajax, bleach, a stone, gels, you name it. It keeps coming back.
I love this product, have a 450 year old cottage with a 250 year old external bathroom and lavvy plus cool store
Trust its well ventilated with limewash walls, ceramic floors and its cold
I also use an electric window washer every time I shower or bath
This has a jacuzzi, underfloor heating and rads
It is the only product that has ever worked
I bought this on your recommendation and the mould came back in 3 weeks!!
Give it another go. I have not seen the mould return on the shower I did so we need to think about the difference.
Can I use this to remove mould from the underside of roof felt in the loft?
It'll probably damage it. Does the roof space have good ventilation? Shouldn't really be any mould.
Dry the shower down after each use, ventilate, no mould. Prevention always better than cure.
Do you have kids? "don't forget to wipe the shower down afterwards" deafening silence.
keeps the shower looking cleaner too
@@SkillBuilder I kept telling my boy to pull the shower curtain against the tiles to keep the water from running down the outside and now after a couple of months of ignorance I have a hole in the floor đ
@@gdfggggg Shower cleaning sprays contain detergent and lift soap scum and limescale residues out of droplets on tiles etc., to run down the wall, shower screen or curtains and into the bath or shower tray. Don't rinse off with clean water which leaves droplets to dry and deposit more scale. You could make your own spray with dish washing detergent and white vinegar if you like, or apply with a cloth.

Will this product damage chrome Roger?
I don't think so but I will test it on some old taps and get back to you
@@SkillBuilder Thanks Roger
Black mold is crazy. The whole ceiling in my bathroom is covered and the artex is peeling off. I tried sprays and all sorts even a UVC light which works quite well but it always comes back.
Artex has to go lots of crevices if you have a mould on ceiling issue
Cheap to do
Paint ceing with Polar Paint, its awesome
Replace grout with good quality antimould grout
Have the extractor in the shower area
Use a dehumidifier at the door
Open windows instead or as well as
Remove any loose grout
Use this product as described and then regrout using an anti mould grout
I have a 450 year old cottage with an outside bathroom
Itâs the moisture condensation on the surfaces that the mould lives on. The surfaces are cold and thereâs excess moisture in the air. Loft insulation would be a good start to insulate your ceiling from the cold air and a decent extractor fan to remove the moist air. The walls can be lined with PIR boards but thatâs a different ball game when cost is a concern. You shouldnât get any mould but if the surfaces are cold and thereâs lots of moist air then it will be an issue.
Get rid of the Artex (or get a professional to, some of the old Artex had asbestos in it); get down to a smoothish (wipeable) finish; wash everything down with bleach solution; let fully dry; seal everything up with something like 1.2.3 primer; use a specific bathroom paint with anti fungal additives; be prepared to touch up every other year after wiping down with bleach solution; try and control humidity in the bathroom even if it means leaving a window open after a shower.
Just apply thick bleach with a paintbrush neat, don't dilute or spray, and leave it to dry, with window open and door closed, heat off, overnight. Extractor fans and heating do not work as well as cold fans which accelerate evaporation and drying of surfaces blown by draught from fan.
Wow thanks for all these great suggestions. đđ»
I use transparent candle wax to STOP it in the first place..on grouting, etc...just cheap tealights dragged and rubbed in to silicone and tile grouts... you all gotta calm down with this heavy not needed chemicals...
What's a good quality tube brand?
Dow Corning or Forever White.
Sorry Rodger but the last shot is new silicone which is misleading.
i use hydrogen peroxide for this job as it's natural and keeps the toxic chemicals away from my skin .
So you are now the Radio 2 Plumber??????? đ€đ€đ
White wine vinegar destroys the mould.
Buy a silicon that is mould resistant?
They all claim that but it is not the case.
Doesn't it destroy the grout over time?
The reason rich people don't have mold in their bathrooms is because they can afford to pay someone else to clean them.
Now then, its time to show us how to remove that crusty old silicone!

Skill builder was formally a consumer rights advocate/journalist, I doubt he would promote a product he did not have full faith in.
Probably, but whats wrong with that? I think he cares about his image and this channel enough to not endorse a product that doesn't work. Comments are open so it wouldn't take long for the audience to call him out.

Thanks for your video, I watched it years ago and student accommodation sites with 1000 rooms going around with weedkiller sprayers full of bleach and rolls of blue tissue paper. Saved re siliconeing all the showers every year and some showers would have black mould in all the grout and the silicone.
White Vinegar would help speed up removing the mould but makes a lot of chlorine fumes and clean the mould in hours
