One the bright side, it allowed him to enjoy different flavors through different juices we used it with. Thickit has basically been my entire life for the last two months. My father was recently diagnosed with ALS and he can no longer swallow solid food. So everything gets put in the blender and the thickened to a consistency that he’s able to swallow. Since I still want to make good meals for him that taste good I always eat some of it to to make sure that the flavor is correct. So I can agree that most things just have the consistency of pudding. It’s really not that bad as long as the flavor is good.
As someone who cannot swallow I got the option of either using thick-it or installing a tube into my stomach that feeds me so I can’t eat anymore. I can assure you, I am much more comfortable now with my stomach tube than I would be having to digest thick-it
I work in a mental hospital and one of my patients has dsyphasia. She has to use thick-it in EVERY fluid...it ends up looking like constantly drinking honey It'd make me scream to have to do that

You could give her all smoothies but they just don't. Water/milk/gatorade is what she drinks - they all get thickit. Also, some soft pure foods like peaches get it too. But yeah, it is considered "nectar thick". It's like honey. But then there's "mild thick and very thick" which are closer to solids like jello and shit

If it's just cornstarch and maltodextrin why not just buy those to mix into things? I think it would probably be cheaper and there would be less worry about supplies running low.

If I had to use as an example, just hypothetical, 1/2 teaspoon of maltodextren and 4 teaspoons of cornstarch for every 8 ounces of fluid, that’s a lot more steps and dishes than say, two scoops from that container for 8 ounces. No dishes, no weird measurements, less fine motor skills, less time taken, less clean up, all around easier and faster

Yeah, tbh this trend is really off-putting to me. I’m not a speech pathologist, but my mom is and she works with people who really need this. For people who have trouble swallowing, thin liquids can be aspirated which can lead to pneumonia. It’s an absolute necessity for some people and decreasing the availability of this stuff when you don’t need it just isn’t cool. Plus I just don’t think it’s very funny to laugh about how gross it is when some people don’t have a choice.

generally people have things like juice thickened because of how bad water is. I tried it at an occupational therapy place that we toured as a camp and it was so so weird, but it did still taste like water and it was totally smooth so I think it was a different thickener
getting it smooth is something of an arcane art, like you have to stir it exactly right or it gets lumpy and gritty which is pretty gross, also colder liquids tend to be harder to get smooth then warmer ones
I used to work in the kitchen of a nursing home specifically portioning and thickening residents' drinks and either you're going to be perfectly fine or we really need to treat old folks better.

There was a video of a couple of people buying pretty much half their store's stock, and a mother who had an infant son with the condition had to inform them of why not to do that. For anyone wondering exactly why not to buy this or any other medical thickening products if you don't need them: they're very expensive for stores to stock! Most stores don't even have it and you need to receive it online or from a doctor. Due to the fact it's hard to stock, there's obviously not that much in-stores. People who rely on those shops to get what they need for themselves or their family member(s) to literally just _survive_ and by buying it for the "funny haha memes *thicc* water" just wastes it. CNA here. Officially (at least where I work) there are three “thicknesses” for people who may not be able to drink well. There’s “thin” which is just normal liquid with no changes. Then “Nectar” which is kind of medium thick for people who have some problems swallowing. Finally “pudding” which you have to use a spoon to actually get out of the cup because it barely moves. I hate stirring the stuff and the people who drink the thickened rarely like it.

Cornstarch makes Oobleck, which is dangerous to drink. It can make you extremely sick, since cornstarch cannot be eaten raw.

Granola is definitely cereal, breakfast cereal is called cereal because it is made from the cereal grains (wheat, maize, rice, barley, oats, rye and sorghum). This is why some people call cereal cold cereal, because hot cereal is stuff like oatmeal. Overly long story short since granola is mostly oats it would qualify as cereal.
But just because something is made from cereal grains doesn't mean it's cereal. Bread is made from wheat, but bread isn't cereal (it's a calzone, see the Cube Rule). Team Teya's girlfriend.

hi friends! this is your reminder not to get this if you don’t need it for medical reasons! i know it just seems like a harmless thing to try but so many people have been buying this that the price has been going up, which means it’s getting much less accessible for people who actually need it. It may not sound like a big deal but people are having trouble actually getting it for a reasonable price, meaning sometimes they can’t get it at all and it’s causing major problems for them. if you’ve tried this before, don’t feel bad! you simply didn’t know, but please spread the word about this as it is serious :)

PSA: Please do not buy thick water if you don't need it! It is life-saving for people who have trouble drinking normal water and if it sells out it can cause a lot of problems for them. Not to mention the increase in demand for it will make the price go up as well, making it more expensive for people who need it.

Thank you for this. I'm a speech language pathologist, we are the ones who diagnose swallowing disorders and make recommendations such as thickened fluids. I really don't like when people drink it and make faces or go yuk. I was always taught not to make fun of peoples food, let alone people who have no choice. It just makes people feel even worse about their condition
Yeah, tbh this trend is really off-putting to me. I’m not a speech pathologist, but my mom is and she works with people who really need this. For people who have trouble swallowing, thin liquids can be aspirated which can lead to pneumonia. It’s an absolute necessity for some people and decreasing the availability of this stuff when you don’t need it just isn’t cool. Plus I just don’t think it’s very funny to laugh about how gross it is when some people don’t have a choice.

My great grandfather had to drink thick liquids for a while after he had throat surgery and he never drank the water because it was so bad. He gave me a tiny cup of it that the nurse gave him and I tried it and I understand why he only drank the juice and iced tea.

generally people have things like juice thickened because of how bad water is. I tried it at an occupational therapy place that we toured as a camp and it was so so weird, but it did still taste like water and it was totally smooth so I think it was a different thickener
Probably. Some thickeners leave a strange taste, but mostly I find the weirdness comes from the different texture of the water itself.
getting it smooth is something of an arcane art, like you have to stir it exactly right or it gets lumpy and gritty which is pretty gross, also colder liquids tend to be harder to get smooth then warmer ones
also you can buy pre-mixed thickened water which takes the "will it be smooth" guesswork out but also costs like a gajillion $$$ more
I used to work in the kitchen of a nursing home specifically portioning and thickening residents' drinks and either you're going to be perfectly fine or we really need to treat old folks better.
Thank you for educating people on why it exists. There was a video of a couple of people buying pretty much half their store's stock, and a mother who had an infant son with the condition had to inform them of why not to do that.
For anyone wondering exactly why not to buy this or any other medical thickening products if you don't need them: they're very expensive for stores to stock! Most stores don't even have it and you need to receive it online or from a doctor. Due to the fact it's hard to stock, there's obviously not that much in-stores. People who rely on those shops to get what they need for themselves or their family member(s) to literally just _survive_ and by buying it for the "funny haha memes *thicc* water" just wastes it. Not to mention it obviously doesn't taste all that good, if you don't need it you're not going to finish it.

CNA here. Officially (at least where I work) there are three “thicknesses” for people who may not be able to drink well.
There’s “thin” which is just normal liquid with no changes.
Then “Nectar” which is kind of medium thick for people who have some problems swallowing.
Finally “pudding” which you have to use a spoon to actually get out of the cup because it barely moves.
I hate stirring the stuff and the people who drink the thickened rarely like it.

Just so everyone knows, thickened water is used for people who cannot swallow as easily. Unfortunately, it’s now a trend to drink it. This is detrimental because prices will rise on thickened water for already-disadvantaged disabled people, and by the time the trend is over, disabled people will struggle with heightened costs on these essential products for their everyday life.
I mean absolutely no offence to anyone, but wouldn’t more people buying lower the price? I may be wrong, but isn’t that how supply and demand works?
