This was a collaboration between two talented brothers, Edgar (singing and sax) and Johnny (guitar) Winter. They had their own bands. Johnny is one of the greatest blues guitarists ever.
The drummer (Uncle John Turner) and the bassist (Tommy Shannon) were Johnny's band at the time.

And those two went on to be SRV backing band Double Trouble....one of ...if not the best rhythm sections in blues!!!!!
I'm 70 years old and I got to see him in Fort Worth Texas at Panther Hall. I feel so fortunate. I'm also old enough that I saw Jimi Hendrix at McFarland Auditorium in Dallas
@@basshoh After a long problem with drugs and alcohol including time in prison the Bass Player, Tommy Shannon was snapped up by SRV to form Double Trouble because he was one of the best bassists around but the drummer in Double Trouble was Chris Layton, not Uncle John Turner shown here.

Many years ago a friend of mine was a bandmate of Edgar Winter for a few years and I saw them play small venues many times over a 4-5 year period. I've been blessed to see many great bands and artists perform live: McCartney, The Who, Rolling Stones, Page & Plant, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, Springsteen, John Fogerty, Tom Petty, Frank Zappa, Bob Seger, Steve Miller, Aerosmith, The Kinks, U2, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jeff Beck, ZZ Top, Santana, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Van Halen, John Mellencamp, and so many more. But I can say without hesitation the most gifted I was lucky enough to witness is Edgar Winter, and if I could transport any of you reading this to any show I ever saw, I'd take you to one of his. Truly a mighty case that music is a gift from God. Thank you and God bless you, Edgar.

Adogg, if you want to hear the BEST version of this song. Edgar does it on the Live Roadwork album. The band on that version is actually Edgar Winter's White Trash with Johnny Winter. (This here version is Johnny Winter's band with Edgar.) Edgar and Jerry LaCroix's dual vocals are impressive!!! Untouchable. Johnny and Edgar are brothers. One in a billion chance that two brothers in the same family would be born as true albino's. Both had incredible careers in their own rights. Johnny was the original Texas Blues man. Lightning fast on the guitar. Check out some of his solo stuff. The Edgar Winter Group and Edgar Winter's White Trash band are both excellent.
Roadwork has been my favorite album since it came out!
Live Roadwork is the version I know and love most. I've not heard this cut before but, damn! it's powerful.

Johnny was the first non-African American to be inducted in the Blues Hall of Fame. The bassist in this video, Tommy Shannon, later went on to play bass for Stevie Ray Vaughn. BTW this is a cover of a song by the Nashville Teens from 1959 or 1960.

Before CZcams, before the Internet, before cell phones, we came home from school and listened with friends in our rooms to these records that we bought on Saturdays in the record stores. This is how we passed our time. And we are richer for it. I can’t say how tickled I am that your generation is discovering it also. That’s why I love these reaction videos.

My dad was a big fan of these guys. I loved when he would put on his music because I knew these guys along with CCR, Three Dog Night, Ray Charles, Joe Cocker and so many more would be in the rotation. I loved music nights!💜💜💜

Roadwork is a live album by vocalist/keyboardist/saxophonist Edgar Winter and his band White Trash, a powerful revue famous for their fusion of funk, gospel, R&B, and rock 'n' roll. It was released as a double LP in 1972 and Johnny Winter made a special appearance singing lead and playing guitar on "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo". Louisiana native Jerry LaCroix, who shared lead vocals with Winter in White Trash, is also prominently featured.🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
The bass player Tommy Shannon was also Stevie Ray Vaughan's bass player in Double Trouble. It has been said in a quote (that apparently has been used in association with several artists) that when Jimi Hendrix was asked "What does it feel like to be the greatest guitar player in the world" he said "I don't know why don't you ask Johnny Winter?"
Tommy was and still is one of the most influential bassist in creating the harder mixture of Rock and Blues we seen from the late 1960's into the early 1990's... and not too many people know who he is. The Winter brothers, Rick Derringer, and Tommy Shannon are names everyone needs to know.
I heard that also but he allegedly said “Why don’t you ask Roy Clark?” Not downgrading Johnny Winters but Roy was probably not just the greatest guitar player ever because there wasn’t a style he didn’t seem to excel at but he was possibly the greatest banjo and fiddle player ever as well.
Don’t get me wrong, when you get to the level of excellence we are talking about you are starting to get into nano degrees of differences and preferences so to claim who is the best comes down to a matter of taste, preference, etc.
I prefer to say they are great and the differences so minor and virtually indistinguishable that you just have to say they all belong on that same pantheon plateau.
Tommy Shannon gets overshadowed by John Entwhistle and still not many know who he was either. They both set a standard for bass players that is next to impossible to equal, let alone beat. Both were/are so great that they too deserve to be on the Pantheon Plateau of greatest guitar players of all time.
Johnny is one of greatest blues guitarists of the 20th Century. Check out his first album from 1969.
Johnny and I graduated from Beaumont High School in 1963. Edgar 2 years behind us. They had more talent than I ever saw.
Two Albino brothers from East Texas. Their daddy was a preacher and momma was an Avon lady. They couldn't go outside and play in the Texas sun, so they stayed indoors and learned to play every instrument that they could get. Johnny only wanted to play guitar, as he started out playing a plastic ukulele. Edgar wanted to play everything, and he did. Johnny was trying to perfect his slide guitar playing and he would ask his mother for empty Avon containers, to place on his finger, to get the slide effect. He said he used an empty lipstick lid for the longest time, until one day, he and Edgar were sent to the hardware store, to get something to fix a broken pipe at home. Johnny started picking up pieces of pipe and tubing and found something that fit his finger perfectly. He put it on in the store and used it from then on. Edgar is a perfect Texan gentleman. Johnny was not. They went their separate ways to form the groups that they went on to play in and achieve phenomenal success. They went to the same school as Janis Joplin. And, Jimmy Johnson, former NFL football coach, was also a classmate of theirs. They were raised in deep Southeast Texas, close to the Louisiana border. They would sneak into juke joints and listen to all of the amazing Blues artists of the day. They'd take what they heard and go back home and play it. Both of them have impressive catalogs our there. Johnny toured and played up until the moment he passed. RIP Johnny ❤️ You made us Texans proud 👏

The bass player became Stevie Ray's bass player
They each had their own bands. But together, they can't be beat!! Before Johnny died, I saw him live in Peoria, IL, at the Bluesfest. He had to be helped out to his chair, but man he played that guitar like a much younger man!! It was outstanding!!
I saw him in Portland's Blues Fest in his old age too. Uncredible.

If you can believe...back in the early 70s, Johnny used to play at our regular Sat. night hangout..a little club in St Martinville La... he would pack the house to the extent that we were worried the fire marshall would show up and shut the shiw down....what an awesome time it was for music...
These brothers were phenomenal extremely talented can play every instrument! One note the bass player Tommy Shannon he became the bass player later for Stevie Ray Vaughan so Tommy Shannon got to play with two of the greatest blues guitarists Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan!

The Brothers Winter💙💙‼️ two albino brothers raised indoors out of the hot Texas sun. Forced indoors they taught themselves music and Edgar played lots of instruments. They both had separate musical careers though and Tommy Shannon (Double Trouble) was Johnny Winters' bass player and they both played at Woodstock‼️

Edgar is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. His brother Johnny is one of the greatest blues guitar players of all time. He signed, at the time, the largest recording contract ever. And, BTW, Johnny produced the last four Muddy Waters albums. Enough cred for you?

I've been a fan of Edgar Winter since 1974 and finally got to see him perform in 2017. He's still amazing!
The Winter brothers are awesome performers. I really hope you'll check out more songs from both of these brothers. Johnny Winter (guitar), unfortunately, has now passed away but he played at Woodstock and you can see that video on CZcams. Edgar Winter (keyboard/sax) is still touring, currently with former Beatle Ringo Starr, and those videos are on CZcams as well.
As I said in a previous comment, I saw Edgar Winter in Augusta, Georgia, which, ironically, is where Tobacco Road is located. From about 1900 to the 1940s, Tobacco Road was home to black and white sharecroppers who were as poor as church mice. This song reflects that reality.

Johnny is playing guitar and he"s the older brother. Edgar is doing lead vocals and the saxophone and keyboards. He also plays drums. I saw them together once and they were amazing! When playing with his younger brother Edgar; Johnny usually held back so his younger brother could steal the show.. Edgar was able to do that because he was very talented also . I just want to say that you should try some of Johnny's solo stuff because he really would cut loose on the guitar. He is in the category with only a few great guitar players. Try the song "Highway 61 Revisited" from his captured live album also from the same album the song Sweet Papa John is really good.
These 2 albinos were called white trash when they were growing up and didn't have many friends so they learned how to play music together music together. Probably 2 of the most talented brothers ever.
Check out "Rock and Roll Hoochi Koo": from "Johnny Winter And". The band included brother Edgar and Rick Derringer. My band covered this song way back in the day - lots of fun to play. I got to see "...And" live at SUNY Albany and they blew me completely away. Later on I saw him when he was part of a Muddy Waters blues tour. And then at a solo gig playing acoustic blues at the Palace Theater to a "crowd" of about thirty people. He was pretty wasted, chugging from a wine skin, staggering around and plopping into a folding chair on stage. Only one song was up to par. Johnny is particularly known for bottleneck playing at it's finest: "Dust My broom" live (and sober) on the David Letterman show in 2012 is a great example.
Alas he passed away 2014. RIP
Johnny had a home roughly forty miles from me. Our bassist's brother did some album photos for him and was invited to Johnny's birthday party one year. Me and my band could have gone as Roddie's gusts but we had a gig that night. Roddy sure had some stories to tell over the next couple of days. The whole "...And" band was there and they put on a short impromptu concert for the guests. Oh well.

Thank you! The Winter brothers were pretty amazing. I'd like to see you do a reaction to another blues/rock guitarist that is far lesser known here in the states, the Irish firebrand Rory Gallagher. He was a stunning performer on the same level of Hendrix and Clapton. A great place to start with him would be with his first band Taste performing at the Isle of Wight 1970 "What's Going On?". He was only 22 at the time of this concert. His playing just got better from there. "A Million Miles Away" from Irish Tour '74 is another great piece. Check him out-you will not be sorry!

The Edgar Winter Group had a very big hit with “Free Ride.” That song was all over the radio back in the day. Pretty funky, too. Check out the studio version, you’ll love it.

Just stumbled onto your channel. Grew up in the 60s and 70s music era. Love the Winter brothers amazing talent. Not sure if you have done Three Dog Night. Please do 1972s "Black and White". We need more music that came from that era in today's messed up world. The messages in music back then we're genuine and from the heart and some where we as human beings have lost our way. Keep on exploring and you got a new subscriber who is retired and has that kind of time on their hands to enjoy it!
