I got in trouble when I was young and went away on a state paid holiday for a few years. It was not fun, and I wouldn't recommend it. One day I saw one of these little guys on my desk and caught it we made a terrarium for him and fed him flies. It was not allowed to "keep pets" as it could cause jealousness from the other inmates, but the guards laughed and let it stay. We kept him for most of the summer then let it go. I was surprised at how interesting these little spyders can be. That was thirty years ago, and I recently started watching Lucus the spyder with my little grandson. We caught one and have had him for about 2 weeks now. Thanks for the tips on keeping them. I learned a lot from just the few mins watching. Well done.

If I ever see a Bee that seems lethargic, and unable to fly, I try to feed it sugary water, and that usually perks them up a bit!
(Take 1/4 teaspoon of sugar, add some water, and let the sugar desolve, then try to get the Bee to drink the liquid)

Even my wife finds them cute, and she is the one of us who is REALLY scared of spiders.
I already bought an enclosure, but I hesitated to buy one because I was scared that I couldn't get the temperature right for them. But now that I heard, that they can be kept at room temperature, this is one point less to be concerned about :D

I have been exploring the possibility of getting one. But my major concern is the length of life they have… I’m a bit of a baby and tend to get attached to my pets so a year is a bit intimidating. My other concern is my location because I live in a small town and I do not have access to insects to feed since ones out in the wild could be contaminated. So I think a bit of putting together an insect farm before hand might be my best option since I wouldn’t just get one spider. Anyhow..I definitely live this video because you are a beginner and she is so adorable! Thank you for sharing! Any tips/suggestions welcome and appreciated!

    Hi
I am in the U.S. In calif. I have raised 1000's of regal jumping spiders, and even was a supplier to some stores for a while. I found that the males were more active, where the females after a while tended to make a really big nest in the upper corner of there house, and then would stay put. Every now and then you would see a flap open, and they would sit with a couple of legs hanging out. I would put a fly in, and it would go in to her nest; she would close the door, and then I would not see her for another couple of weeks. The males did not make very elaborate nests, and would be more active hunters. I wish you well with yours, and a happy life together.

i havent kept jumping spiders myself yet, but interacted with one at a friends place, and it's amazing just how inquisitive, interactive, observant and lively they are, and just really fun and cute.
kinda reminds me of keeping betta or green spotted puffer fish. both definitely watch everything happening in the room. but fish don't tend to behave anywhere near as personable and ... just friendly as spoods.
(betta are lazy, showy divas, that prefer to chill on a leaf near the surface untill it's feeding time, and can get REALLY upset if you're wearing something more colorfull than them .. this goes mainly for males, which are inbred to be ridiculously territorial. puffers look adorable, are super inquisitive and active ... and at feeding time, turn into what you'd imagine cartoon piranha to be like. they rip and tear within seconds, and when you're cleaning the tank, your fingers better not smell like clam!)

I've never used a food bowl for jumping spiders, but I mostly feed mine flies, and tiny crickets and tiny grasshoppers and they jus won't stay in a bowl. Plus they get good exercise hunting also teaches them how to b effective hunters. They are a trip tho lol I jus can't get over how intelligent they seem, they are very smart for a invertebrate

    • @guiltriple
      @guiltriple Před 2 lety

Food bowls are mostly for the ones that are less active (and therefore less visible) or ones that have a risk of burrowing into substrate and coming back to hurt your spider when you're not expecting it anyway, so that is perfectly fine.

When I was little, I was afraid of spiders. Where I live, you don't encounter them, like at all, you would have to go look for them. Later on in my life what happened was, I was idly listening to some video, radio or something where they described how the portia would spend time planning on how to solve a maze to get to its food, before starting the trip, having _memorized_ the route. I was like... It does _WHAT???_ That thing the size of a pea solves a MAZE? In its HEAD?
Needless to say, I was awestruck, fascinated.
They have like some hundreds of thousands of neurons, all in all, and holy hell they make the best out of them!

I believe the only chemical it releases is lactide, which is non-toxic, and this is only when it's heated to 200oC. We do not recommend putting any of our PLA items over or under heating equipment, just to avoid any chance of it warping or releasing anything.

If it’s a baby (eating fruit flies stage) though you definitely want a smaller enclosure so they can more easily find the food. Supposedly if it’s too big they might go hungry. As they reach sub-adult age is where you can go big. I’ve seen videos of people using bigger reptile terrariums to create bio-active enclosures. Just depends on what you want/your available space. The big enclosures from Bigfatphids are quite nice, and PadsandPedipalps on Etsy makes quite nice large ones that resemble this one in the video. I’m housing some juveniles there.

Chain petstores in North America (PetSmart, Petco, etc.) should be avoided, so I’m guessing pets are home should be avoided as well. Look for geckos being rehomed or find a reputable breeder.

I absolutely love jumping spiders! Their so cute!
but I’m way to scared to own one, the risk of it escaping is too much for me 😭

I know right!! I'm so conflicted because they're so cute and I'd love to observe it but sometimes just looking at them really gives me the heeby jeebies

Escaping is on you and your attention to detail with your enclosure. A lot of the time they hangout and dont mind being recaptured

Aww yeah fortunately I will say that I can open her enclosure and not worry about her jumping out (I thought she would), but they’re surprisingly manageable lol

i would love to own one, but getting tiny ones means they could die and getting a sizeable one means it's either pregnant or not living for much longer.. and for the price its like 😟. wish there was a shop here in the states like the one where you got betty from

Older females should not have any risk of gravidity if you are getting them captive-bred from a reputable breeder who has not mated her.

I recommend using a wet Q tip to hydrate betty its much better as the fabric swallows the whole source of water so she can just suck it up

During winter my room can get to 18-19c during the night, would this be OK for a jumping spider??
I'd have it on top of my Leo's viv in hopes that would help a little

I don't "own" jumping spiders but I keep a small garden which seems to allow a good population of them to thrive. I don't use insecticides in my garden, if there are pests I prefer to manually remove them.

My first jumper was a wild caught P audax. I now own 2 P regal and love them. I started keeping them to overcome my arachnophobia and it has definitely worked.

Hey, do you have a suggestion for lights? I’ve been searching, asking people. No one has a good answer.
I’m looking for full spectrum (mimics the sun), non-fluorescent, non-heating lights for my jumping spiders.
