Crib Lem Grade 1 Scramble: Yes Please!

- Crib Lem, aka Llech Ddu Spur, is a long grade 1 scramble on an occasionally difficult-to-follow line that finished on the summit of Carnedd Dafydd.
The approach is also long and sometimes boggy, but the reward is worth the grind and this underused scramble delights with challenges that never exceed grade 1.
There are several options for a continuation but in this video, you'll see me take the most direct route back to the starting point.
This route is in the book; Scrambles in Snowdonia by Steve Ashton. Buy on Amazon: amzn.to/3QQAWNb

Definitely agree it’s a3* route. Great video explaining details on parking, the walk in and the route itself. From my point of you I really enjoyed the walk in, it’s a quiet valley and with interest. Those after a ‘out the car and scrambling’, experience would best look elsewhere.
Thanks, I love the fact this one is well away from the crowds.
Cracking route that Daniel, visually stunning with the dramatic clouds.
It was indeed, I really enjoyed the scramble. Those clouds!
It’s a fantastic route. Even the walk in prior to the spur is peaceful. Not many better places to top out from a scramble than Carnedd Dafydd - the views over the Glyders and to the Snowdon horseshoe are majestic! Great video as always 🤙🏻
I'm going to do this route in winter, ideally after some snow. I'll do a wild camp too if it's not too windy.
Well done Daniel.Quality as always🏴
Great footage as always, I've been meaning to do this scramble for a while now including Carnedd Llewelyn and Yr Elen as a circular route. Keep these coming !!
Thanks!
Did this route last year loved it as no one about!
Those are the best routes! And I've got a few more of the quiet ones on the list for this year :-).
Great video as usual. You're right about Crib Lem being best in low cloud, it really takes on an other character, especially higher up alongside the black ladders.
Doing this for the first time in a couple of weeks, looks class. Nice video pal, seen a few of yours and they’re all mint. Good work baldy, keep em coming 👍
Thank you, I'm sure you'll enjoy it, it's well out of the way but worth the walk-in imo.
@@thebaldscrambler I’ve been wondering what the hike was like getting to it. It’s been in my head that it’s quite an arduous boggy trek. Your soggy foot answered any questions I had 😛!! Glad you had a good day tho, I’m buzzing to get up there, looks mint 👍
It rained quite heavily the night before but yes that boot looked a right mess! Enjoy.@@perko2527
This is definitely going on my bucket list. Thanks for the footage.
Yes, that’s definitely gone on to the to do list.
A very enjoyable video. I was aware of this route but hadn’t logged its quality so thank you for bringing that to my attention. Have you tried shoes with a graphene sole? I use Inov8 but there are others. The material means that shoes with a lugged sole for wet grass are still pretty sticky on rock. And shoes with slight lugs are very sticky. I was pleasantly surprised.
@@thedaftestnameicouldthinko8233 don’t you find innov-8 don’t last tho? I love them, comfiest grippiest boots I’ve had. I’ll buy same again when replacing but they’re just not tough enough. Very much love hate for me…
I really liked the location; nice, quiet and with great views down the valley and misty as well. The walk back was pleasant too (along that ridge at the end of the vid).
I've never tried them but did read an article about a year ago, I guess I was waiting to see how others got on with scrambling them before I committed. If I did buy them I'd probably do a comparison with my TX4s; that might make an interesting vid for the channel.@@thedaftestnameicouldthinko8233
Parking is tight in Gerlan, so use the car park behind YSior/The George pub. Adds a little to the walk in, but you'll find plenty parking spaces there.
Looks a great route Dan - thanks for sharing. PS looks like you got a new drone...what did you get?
My crashed drone was returned to me by a guy who found it, so that was lucky. The Crib Lem footage was taken the day before I lost it but I managed to recover it from the memory card, thankfully! It's a DJI Mini 3 Pro.
Hi Dan. Been following you from the beginning. Your content is always spot on and i have used your routes and videos for myself as homework. You deserve a lot more followers than you have. Thanks again.
PS I hope you found/retrieved your drone?
Thank you! Yes I got the drone back, someone found it and posted it back so it all ended well. I think scrambling is fairly niche so I'm not sure how popular the channel can get but I'm enjoying putting out the content and there are lots more routes for me to film, so I'm gonna keep going! :-).
Cracking route isn't it? Bit boggy on the approach, definitely during wet periods! Looks like you enjoyed it too 👍
Yup, I got the full mud treatment in that boot! Good recommendation, yes I would go back and do that again. I was thinking of doing a winter camp at the head of the valley for 2 nights in the snow (if we get any) and doing the scramble as well, I think that's doable in light snow/ice.
@thebaldscrambler it's an excellent winter climb, on my list! Now for some snow 😂
It’s a great route, and I’ve done the foot in the bog a few times! 😂👍
I'll defo be doing the route again, I'm already lookgin at winter tents that will get through a snowy night in that valley. I think a wild camp and a icy scramble up Crib Lem would be great fun and a little different!
Any recommendations for starting out scrambling? Ive got absolutely 0 experience in it and have no clue where to start but i do wanna do it at some point 😅
Those boots are useless in mud! Glad your car was OK, as you say they can nasty in Gerlan about parking
I parked in the layby opposite the houses this time as I was running late but I was a bit worried still. In the end it all turned out okay. I know there's free parking in Bethesda at Pantdreiniog Car Park ( maps.app.goo.gl/aEueLaZA6PBckQH1A ) and they are more forgiving there, I think it's popular with dog walkers and it's quite hidden away.
Hi tbs. I'm thinking of buying the same drone but leaving off because the m4p is being released on Monday, so hopefully prices will drop. I cannot find anywhere that gives the max range and is it possible to go beyond that and lose track of it? In the early days I distinctly remember people losing their drones by flying out of range.
I think the furthest I've taken it is about 1.5km out (on a mountain so no obstacles) and the signal was solid. I don't really need to take it much further as I like to film myself or the route I'm on. I've lost the connection a couple of times, first when it went over a ridge (Crib Goch) and also in the New Forest when trees blocked the signal. Both times, it just hovered for a moment, went up vertically and then automatically started returning to home. On both occasions, I cancelled the Return to Home when the signal reconnected and continued to fly it. As far as I know, it will always return to home if the signal is lost. There was an update this year that limited it to 120m above the take off point but I haven't updated mine so I can still override that height limit and go up to 500m ;-). It's always best to read the docs for any update as any new limitations will be in the updates, I wouldn't be surprised if they limit the range of these drones at some point for safety reasons.
@@thebaldscrambler many thanks. Your footage is one of the reasons I'm buying one! 👍
@@thebaldscrambler I'm going to go for DJI mini 4 pro fly more - £980. I cannot find the mini 3 pro fly more combo, only the mini 3 and it's just £50 less.
The Drone Creative is a great YT channel, worth a sub in my opinion. I was just watching czcams.com/video/YeLsNoKwEgU/video.html and it looks like there are loads of extra advanced features on the Mini 4 Pro.
Err don’t mean Bethesda that’s the start point
Gerlan is up the hill out of Bethesda.
