  • Right people, just a short POV video from my scramble up Jack's Rake below Pavey Ark in The Lake District, I wild camped at Stickle Tarn and took a trip up first thing in the morning, Rated a grade 1 Scramble and I've fancied it for years, wish the footage wasn't so close in but I had to keep my hands free whilst scrambling, Anyway thought it was worth a video.
    I will have a full video out on Friday including the Wild Camp, I just thought this might be of interest for anyone looking on Scrambling Jacks Rake who wouldn't need to watch the whole wild camping video
    Take it easy, Matt

    Alright people, i scrambled Jacks Rake whilst wild camping at stickle tarn on bank holiday, (full video out friday) posted this for anyone only intested in the scramble 👍 should of filmed it in the wider angle as it doesent do it justice but i thought its worth the upload either way, have a good week 🤙

    I have visited Pavey Ark just once - 60 years ago (1963 !) It's just as I remember it. My climbing pal and I did just what you have done - climbed up from Dungeon Ghyll and camped at Stickle Tarn. It was a bank holiday, too. Hot day - we skinny-dipped in a pool and lay flat out on rocks to dry off. It feels like yesterday and your video brought all the memories back!

      One of my favorite comments I've had on a video of this mate 😁 what was it like back then? I assume nothing like it is now with the amount of hikers or even people like me making videos,?

      @@MattDoesMountains Those places have a timeless quality about them. It's sixty years ago, but I remember with incredible detail. The Pope was in the news - seriously ill ... and Gerry & The Pacemakers were at #1 in the charts (again!) We climbed up directly behind the Old Dungeon Ghyll pub. There actually were several groups doing the same thing, but I don't think they were headed toward Pavey Ark. By the time we skinny dipped, there was no one about, but the pool had a waterfall tippling into it and the spray had a rainbow through it. When we arrived at Pavey Ark, it was deserted. We camped there alone. Next day, after scrambling up Jack's Rake, we descended back into Langdale via the scree slope of Pike O'Stickle. I enjoyed the scree jumping, but when we arrived at Wall End, I noticed that I had lost my silver signet ring somewhere up there in all those tons of scree!

      If you don't mind me asking mate, how old are you? Your story has blown my mind pal,. I've always wondered what it would of been back in the day, even when I used to hike in the lake district about 10 years ago it was such a different place, did you ever find your ring?

      @@MattDoesMountains My name is Victor. I got my name because I was born the day the war finished in May, 1945. That makes me 78. I can tell you exactly what it was like 60 years ago, Matt: the fells themselves are almost unchanged. What has changed is the infrastructure that supports the tourism. Most places now have a car park, with a pay machine. Some provide toilets (unheard of 60 years ago!) In some places (like Pen-y-Ghent or Snowdon) the tracks have been "improved" with man-made log pavings, designed to reduce the wear and tear caused by decades of climbers' boots. Guide posts have been erected pointing the way (we used a tattered old ordnance survey map or just guessed) and wandering off the accepted route is frowned on. In short, climbing and fell-walking was much more "man against nature" back then. And there was a genuine camaraderie among us all.

    Did Jack’s Rake with my 20 year old lad last year. Was a great route up but we weren’t blessed with the views that you had. Proper clagged-in by the time we were half way up. Amazed you had it all to yourself on such a beauty of a day.

      Couldn't have probably picked a better day to go up, I camped at the tarn below the night before and it was still busy in the night so jumped up early and went up whilst no one was about, even pavey ark being empty was amazing 🤩

    Great presentation. Takes me right back to when I did the climb. Nice weather going up. Visited four other summits, then had to get the waterproofs out coming down. I think lakeland said to me "You're not going to get away with it that easy today".

    Nice one, Mat. I was camping there couple weeks ago. Wasn't sure about Jack's rake - I'm not great with heights and not experienced with climbing/scrambling. So gave it a swerve. Pleased I did. Mountain rescue will be pleased too! 😅

      Haha made me laugh this mate about the mountain rescue 😅 unbelievable spot for a camp, one of my favorite places in the lakes, honestly though it's not too bad, I suppose though it's hard to speak for everyone, my girlfriend didn't fancy it either, I absolutely love scrambling mate so it's a good bit of fun for me 🤙🤙

    Great scramble that Matt. I did it with my 3 grown up kids last time. The last bit on the big rocks/slabs is the trickiest. Doesnt seen any right way. Just find your own way to the pinnicle. Awesome views you had

      @@MattDoesMountains we were just talking about going the Lakes this Friday and having a mooch around, maybe have a crack at Great Gable and some of the grade 2s on there. Have done them before like but haven't been up there for ages. Either that or a Ghyll scramble, those are even better possibly, maybe around Langdale.

    thank guys find these vidoe as do not like hight unless i have rope bit two much but have see this i find i when up it with week full pack of wild camping it give me so much i am ok i glad i view i thought the top was more difficult and the first bit as my rucksack is over 25 kg pull me back especially at the top as the gap is not well wiode on the edge but great for me now

    • @MattDoesMountains
      @MattDoesMountains  Před 10 měsíci

      Thanks mate, I don't get massively bothered by heights but I know exactly what you mean about having weight on your back, 25kg is a 1/3 of my body weight so I would want to do anything exposed with that much on my back, I'm always trying to lighten my pack as I do more wild camps 👍👍
