    Greece has always been a gateway for immigrants searching for what they assumed would be a better life in Europe. But many of those who've crossed illegally into Greece have found that they have traded one bad situation for another. Refugees from war-torn countries like Syria and Afghanistan are finding themselves stuck in a country that is not only battling an economic crisis but is witnessing a rise in anti-immigrant violence, exemplified by the a nationalist political party known as the Golden Dawn.
    VICE News' Alex Miller travelled from Athens to the western port of Patras to find out what it is like to be trapped in a country you never wanted to be in in the first place.

    On a train to a port on Greece 3 immigrants jumped into the train.A lady conductor was going around checking everyone's tickets.The immigrants witnessed this.When she came to them ,they accused her of racism.She asked why was that ?They replied that she is checking their tickets but not the whites .Anyway they had no tickets.She asked them to get off the train and while they were leaving they persisted in their defiance.They stood outside the coach and turned up the humble tone about how poor they are and how they need to get to the port.She quickly replied that they could sell their iphones xs max and come back and pay their fare.They reviled at her.All 3 had iphones xs max.

    I do not think that the events in Manolada are the norm for workers who are illegal immigrants in Greece. Many people from Pakistan and Bangladesh earn 30 euros per day and they pay nothing for shelter and food. Why ? Because they prefer to stay in their bosses warehouses and send all the money to their countries. I feel really depressed when people behave to people like animals or even worse but lets face it, it was their choice to enter illegal in to a country without a job, insurance or even knowing some basic english. As far as people which countries (UK, USA) supported wars in Afghanistan or Iraq and now they feel really bad for these poor people and blame Greece (which of course has its own mistakes) the fact is that i never saw big massive anti-war protests taking place there. In fact most of these people were just watching the news (like the war is a soap opera) and then back to their typical materialistic way of life.

    No nation can survive without laws. Migration will always exist and needs to exist but even that can get out of hand. Disagreement over the levels of immigration is not racism, bigotry or even xenophobia but rather meaningful questions on how societies can absorb migrants at levels that are beneficial to both immigrant and their host society. One of the biggest issues with the politics of mass migration is that one political party benefits because it is a source of new voters that come at the expense of others and of course the media never has a meaningful discussion on the negatives of illegal mass migration.

    I am a Greek legal immigrant to Netherlands i left Greece cause i could find a decent job as in netherlands cause all that Massive uncontrolled immigrants destroy everything pays and etc. The state doesnt protect employment in Greece and its easy for simple jobs to be ruined by desperate people. The problems lie in EE policies EE helped in wars in Iraq and Pakistan and in Afganistan. The majority of those people come from those country. EE doesnt not accept a decent distribution among EE. I DO NOT HATE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS BUT IF THEY PILE UP IN MY COUNTRY MY COUNTRY WILL END LIKE SYRIA

    Wherever immigrants go the locals will always be hostile; combine that with a tragic fragile economy and you get this. The rise of the right; pretty similar to what we saw in the UK during the 70's and 80's. Racism was at an all time high and that only generated more problems. But at least those migrants were legal and had papers and access to free healthcare. Greece is much worse by far.

      I agree. I also find it hilarious how some people say "Why don't you fix your own country?". Ya like why don't they stop the genocide or ethnic cleansing through dialogue or create infrastructure from the ground up? Alot of people lack compassion.

    • @wonderland1911
      @wonderland1911 Před 10 lety +1

      fredguy2 I agree with you too!:) I think that the problem in cases like this is also the fact that people lack education. And with education I don't mean to say that people who have no diploma or whatever make those harsh comments.
      But what I try to say is that people should educate themselve about a situation or subject before they have an opinion about it. People think that an 'opinion' means that you can say whatever you wanna say, but an 'opinion' actually needs to be based on facts and information. It's more than just saying 'go back to your own country, we don't want dirty immigrants'.
      People lack education and even more important: humanity. We need to understand that it's not easy as it sounds.

    This is a tough issue. The immigrants are trying to escape poverty or war or both but doing this illegally in massive numbers is not exactly the answer either. They overwhelm all the country's systems, economy and order creating a chaos. This is not the way to go.

    I completely understand why someone would flee to get a better life, what I don't get is the people who flee, protest something in a different country.. I am completely with getting people help and living a better life, but if they go the distance of protesting in another country about their health... why not the country the migrated from? why not stay and protest in their country they migrated from??? why not try to make it a better place for their people??? that would save more lifes and help more people than simply migrating. Not being racist, just an honest thought.

    I mean its fucked up what Greeks are doing to immigrants but lets be fair. Before all these protests arose, back in the early 90's, after the fall of communism Greeks took in close to half a million Albanians and an shitload of people from the former U.S.S.R. From what my father tells me, is that Greeks treated him good when he left Albania. I've also heard other stories of how many refugees were beaten to death but there are always good and bad things occurring. I think Greeks don't want anymore immigrants because they already have alot. In a country with a population of 10 million, 1/10 people is an immigrant. Plus don't forget what the economic situation is like in Greece and most of Europe. Its an easy scapegoat for corrupt politicians to blame the economic situation on immigrants. I mean they took out big loans from EU and didn't put out an effective taxing system which brought all this mischief. Not to mention the fact that most jobs that these immigrants have, wouldn't even be touched by Greeks.

    I love Greece and the Greeks. In South Africa there are many people of Greek descent. My friend's children attended a Greek school in Jo-burg and they are Africans but speak Greek too. Unless you've lived in other countries besides your own you'll have some compassion. I do agree that people who come to your country must be productive people who will contribute to the growth and development of the country. Free loaders I don't want whether white or black even in my beautiful country of birth South Africa. America as my country of choice took me in for what I can contribute not what I can take from it. The story of immigrants is about second chances.

    Greece needs to employ a similar system to what is employed in the UAE: if you are an immigrant, you must have a job otherwise you must leave the country. Of course that would require good coordination between the immigration department and the Police, which I doubt would happen.

    • @CyGrGuy
      @CyGrGuy Před 9 lety

      Mahtlahtli The UAE isn't in debt of €350,000,000 which it can't pay back. We can't afford these illegal immigrants. Also, they're illegally here, so they must go, according to law.

    • @Mahtlahtli
      @Mahtlahtli Před 9 lety

      CyGrGuy I never said that greece should keep illegal immigrants. Im not defending that whatsoever. You were initially talking about immigrants who work in greece legally for a job.
      Okay, so if Greece cant afford to give humanitarian treatment to migrant workers who work legally, then they should not be "following the UAE system" like you said in the first place. This is exactly what I ment. Greece shouldn't follow UAE's path

    • @CyGrGuy
      @CyGrGuy Před 9 lety +1

      Mahtlahtli Why shouldn't they employ the UAE system? That way, only people contributing to the economy by working and paying taxes will benefit from social projects, like medical care. If anything it makes more sense for a country with little money.

    • @Mahtlahtli
      @Mahtlahtli Před 9 lety

      CyGrGuy Because, like you said, Greece has enormous debt and so they would not be able to give social benefits, pay government agencies to monitor the treatment of migrants, pay for health benefits, adequate housing for the legal migrant workers. Greece can't just hire a bunch of people who have not security nets. That violates certain human rights. Workers need certain rights and social nets (whether they are citizens or not) So if greece cant pay to give them adequate treatment, then they should not hire them at all. Simple as that.

    • @CyGrGuy
