- When he was 18 years old, Ike Nnaebue left his home nation Nigeria for Europe. But the dangers forced him to give up in Mauretania. Now, he’s now back on the same migration route. This time, as a filmmaker.
These days, Ike Nnaebue is a famous "Nollywood” director, a prominent representative of Nigerian film. When he tried to emigrate to Europe in 1998, he couldn’t see a future for himself in Nigeria. Like so many young people in Africa, he dreamed of a better life in Europe - financially, at least. Now, camera in hand, he’s taking the same journey from Nigeria via Benin, Burkina Faso, Togo, Mali and Mauretania to Tangier in Morocco. Along the route he meets men and women who’ve turned their backs on their homes and who are intent on trying their luck in Europe - despite all the risks and obstacles.
Back in 1998, Ike Nnaebue gave up on his plans after meeting a stranger who warned him of the dangers. Ike ended his journey there and then - and never got as far as Europe. But returning to Nigeria without any money was out of the question. Ike Nnaebue spent two years in Gambia, where he was able to work on several theater and film productions. At the age of 21, he knew what he wanted to do with his life and went back to his family.
Nowadays, social media and TV reports show just how dangerous migration can be, with cases of enslavement, abuse and other crimes committed against those who undertake a journey of this kind. Stories that are impossible to ignore. That’s why Ike Nnaebue decided to retrace his footsteps and try to understand why so many young Africans are still prepared to risk everything for a better life.

look, my father just returned from a 6 months stay in Morocco and he told me the number of west africans in Morocco has increased dramaticly from before the pandemic and that Moroccans are starting to be fed up and there are calls to the goverment to start send people back to their home country and better protect the borders. there are not enough jobs for Moroccans themselves let alone to support an influx of west africans. This situation is not sustainable. Expect a crackdown in the next 12 months. I wish everyone the best of luck in their journey to prosperity inshallah.

The dangers, perils, discrimination, abuse, and exploitation that awaits you in Europe or other countries that will hate you for your color and immigration status is a real factor in your journey. Please consider this factor before leaving your land because there is no place like home. Wishing you all the best, may God guide you and protect you.
I am not African, but my family has shares in companies with operations in a few dozen African countries. If Western, Chinese and Russian extraction companies left Africa tomorrow, there would be zero protection for Africa's corrupt politicians and you would see uprising after uprising with smart, benevolent African leaders replacing their puppet predecessors. I am sorry to say, but there is still a boot on the neck of Africa and it is not an African boot.

The worst of human kind are those moroccans in Europe.
I've made a conscious effort to live and thrive in Nigeria, I started as a Construction worker with ccecc then quit and started doing taxi, from there opened a shop where I sell phones and accessories in retail and after so many years of not getting what I want, I continued doing my taxi interstate to be precise, shuttling people from Southeast and southsouth to Lagos or Abuja on charter or what they call hire, 2022 I opened a luxury rental car company in Lagos online without owing a single luxury car but with the help of Google my business and some associates and companies who own these luxury vehicles like Landcruiser, Prado, Hilux, Coasters, Camrys etc. I only owned three Toyota Sienna but later sold two and retained one, people mostly connect with my company online and I can tell you that I've worked with people like Marvins record, So many high profile Emirs and Obas that I wouldn't want to mention their names but they don't know who they're dealing with as I'm mostly contacted online by their PA's who probably have not met me before, in 2023 Feb, I met some guys on twitter called Obidient tech space who offer online courses like front end, back end and full stack development course for a token and decided to enroll and it has been a bliss since, my phone business started paying off after 6 years courtesy of my wife, I dated her for four years before I married her on March 5th 2022, I also trained her on how to trade since she has never sold anything before, it took her time to learn but today she has mastered the craft, now I have time to do my transportation business and my online course too. I almost gave up but decided to stay put, if we put the effort we used in travelling overseas here in Africa, in few years time, we will succeed. Mind you I have a very little office space for my Lagos office because most of the transaction are done online and people trust and patronize me because Google verified my business page, address, home address etc

I see all these people risking their life as been greedy. They think when they get to Europe they will be picking money on the ground. Some of them had been lied to as to how much they can make in Europe.
Great story we need more success stories like this. Real wealth is organic takes time & dedication & that very same dedication those who travel if shown through the love of their country hard work & commitment success is imminent especially in Africa everything you need is there resources, opportunity, environment, language, family, friends, community, lineage etc all work in the favour of the Black African in Africa. Creating wealth is a process, trial & error, crawl before you start walking & running just like life. If more of our sisters & brothers put Africa in the centre of their vision a conscious effort as in your case like the hairdresser seeing her in action she’s a natural hustler with Africa on her sights this could had made a difference

The way I cried at the end of the documentary…seeing those two young women looking at the sea. I really wish the best for them. Africa, Africa…we deserve to stay in our countries to dream and prosper…but when?

Well, in Europe we also had dictatorships in several countries but the people in those countries united and brought down the evil regimes so we could have democracy and prosperity. Why don't Nigerians and other Africans do the same, instead of just giving up and migrating ? They have no strength to improve their countries? Apparently not! They think Europe should be their "nanny" and take dare of them like babies.
Africa has an abundance of potential.
More so than anywhere else.

This story brought me to tears. I think about my grandmother from Cape Verde who was terrified of the ocean. She came to the USA by boat in the 1940s. The ocean tells many stories 😢
Its just sad, the picture of those two ladies, however brave they speak, I can only imagine the anguish in their hearts. The one sister said it, this a journey of no return. The odds are stacked against them, you gotta admire their inner strength. Man how i wish I could transport myself at that moment and just offer them a hug as a fellow African brother. The damn leaders have failed our continent, endowed with so much riches but all privatized by thieves who forget about the common man and woman. Most societies make it a priority to protect women and children, it is really sad to see our sisters in this predicament.
The saddest thing no one talks about is that those of us who make it out are haunted by PTSD. So in a way we never made it out in our minds.
The price is too high either way. Those who don't leave feel we have it better.
But as in the video, the two women can still share with each other.
Here you face it alone. We have material comfort but the mental challenge is not a walk in the park.
If wishes were horses beggars would ride. At some point you just gather your broken pieces and carry on.
All this young military aged men from Africa/ middle east and Asia are economic migrants. They can work and fight in their countries to make things better and not salivate on European sweat welfare money

Her baby is 3years, she left him when he was 3months old.......she is still on the road and still not got to her destination yet!. you can see she almost teard up there. Life really hits us all in different ways. I pray they all OK🙏
It could be many years more that she stays on the road. Most never find what they are looking for.
This documentary reminds me of a phrase I read today, it reads "talent is equally and globally distributed but opportunity is not". Many Africans and Nigerians particularly have dreams and ambitions to do great things but live in a continent that suffocates these dreams and ambitions. To every young African out there working hard to achieve something great through honest work, kudos to you. Thank you DW Documentary for this.
What this documentary tells me is. They should stop trying to go from country to country an focus on ONE PLACE. Their minds are all over the place. If they focus on one place an build it up. They would have less problems. Yes learning how to make money is a problem. News flash. There is such a thing as TRADE. They keep getting things from the West an trying to sell it. That is a waste of time. They should take what they have right in front of them an sell it to the west.

A few decades ago they were very poor countries where misery and disease abounded and today they are becoming prosperous countries. Yes this was very sad,I too would love to know that they did not even attempt to paddle there,if only I did not live so far on the other side of the world from them & they been able to obtain visa to my Country,I would have open my home to them & helped them to get a job
I was magrating from Benincity to sokoto from sokoto to Yemen from Yemen to Agadiz from Agadize to duruku from duruku to Libya desert 🏜️ 8days in desert before getting to gadamis from gadamis to sabar from sabar to tripoli, then I spent 4 years in Libya I could not make it to enter Italy. Due to people that was dying in the sea at that time, so I have to magrit myself to another worst journey to Morocco, my journey to Morocco started from borders Illizi Province,to tamanrasset, from tamanrasset, to maghnia from maghnia to Errachidia in Morocco from Errachidia to final place Nador, let me cut the story short. Total years in all this journey was 5 years before I con finally see Europe? Nor be small suffer , but all glory be to God for being there for me throughout the journey, and for saving my life in the middle of life and death, God stood by me

I really like that this film just shows the road. It is almost like a traditional road movie and a story of people and places. Its a very refeshing take on the subject and good to hear no political opinion, no judgement, no sensationalism, no good, no bad because there is already so much about that... It doesnt tell you, it shows you. What you see is what you get and that makes this a very relatable and human story.

@@walli6388 I was traveling with a tour bus from Germany to Italy - Catolica - a few years ago, and as the bus was passing farmland in north Italy I saw them working in the blazing sun and picking tomatoes, they were also present at the beaches selling souvenirs to the tourists, I spoke to one of the young men, and asked him questions and he told me that it was an organized group, working for somebody and that I was the first person that day that spoke to him ( in french) like a human being,

@@hat880 Instead of building wealth, you wait around for someone to give you what you're owed... yet no one actually owes you anything. Africa needs to GROW UP. It's apparent that surviving in the north is harder. Just look at all the extremely strong northern cultures across the world. Grow up. Being a perpetual victim is unjustified.

I am from Italy and I was moved to tears watching this documentary. It was so poetic and beautiful. Africa and its people have all my respect. One day (and not very far hopefully) this world will be a better place, where everyone can aim at building its own destiny where he wants.

Kudos to the producer i dont believe i have ever watched anything so insightful of the nature of this journey. Its very sad and hurtful what my people are going through just to make a decent living.
It’s tackled a very hard topic that is reported from a lineal point of view, however it leaves a suspenseful and agonizing feeling of wanting to know if these people are here with us and hope that they all lived to 2023, my great worry are the children.
From Kenya, this indeed has shed a light to what we as humans, Africans undergo trying to create a smile for tomorrow. This was real touching. Thank you Ike , AND thank you for everyone out there trying. Aluta Continua!!!!
This really broke my heart and have me in tears. I didn’t realise how harsh the reality of migration by road is. This made me really appreciate my situation and grateful. Seeing young people like me chasing their dream and taking big risk that could possibly even end in death or other things. Life is not fair.

Watching this hurts and it brings up a bit of anger in me. We can get things right in Africa. It can be done and it must be done.
Has to be done. Even 10% of Africa cannot move to European countries without there being a civil war in those countries. What happened in France recently is only going to get worse as more Africans think that crashing into a place that they are not wanted is a good idea.
I have a relative in Bahrain who says, most of the black churches there belong to Nigerians, there is no country that has a small Nigerian population from what i see online, and its prolly why their music spreads like wildfire after release. they have the biggest 'overseas complex' in Africa. i hope they soon learn Nigeria can also be abroad for people from other continents and should try and stay and fight for it.
Ii could literally see the fear in the faces of the 2 young women looking at the sea, this is the true definition of bravery, present of fear but courageous enough to keep pushing. It is important to make know that I don't support the journey they are trying to embark on. I am advocate of if you can't fly from airport with visa, stay home.
Beautifully filmed and very moving. So many best wishes to Golden Gucci, Laura, Sandra and the two Ivorian women. It takes a lot to be so open and vulnerable about your dreams and aspirations despite the obvious barriers and hurdles.
Disagree: I fell asleep... and had to comeback to it. There is no "lead up" no suspense .. and the topic is worn out. This documentary need more in my opinion; the editing is chop-suey

I'm speechless and in tears. This is what thousands of our brothers and sisters are going through as a result of our politicians' greed. Their family spends billions of dollars in countries where the poorest folks dying to migrate to.
It is a big concern why Africa is so difficult to develop and liberate its people from poverty
