      Fox wasn’t great but this is Azinger who is a good commentator and is Miller’s longtime protege as a broadcaster. He may have just been misquoting the 2005 chip as you say, but he also may have been thinking of a similar putt to JT’s here on the 16th in 1997 that Tiger didn’t make, but hit a masterful lag from 40 feet having to start with his back to the hole.

You have to look at the broad spectrum of things. Even steph curry, the greatest shooter of all time, misses wide open threes sometimes. You're living in a dream world if you think that making every putt that is makeable. I think the make percentage from 7 feet for pros is about 50%. So that's hardly "choking." • @justineller6718
      @justineller6718 Před 2 lety

      @@br5448 good question. They definitely made the course conditions tougher. The fescue was considerably longer than how it normally is.(Knee to waste high in some spots) They keep it cut down for the most part during regular season. It played right around 7,800 yards so not a short course by any stretch (but distance doesn't matter for those guys) We also had quite a bit of rain before the tournament and little to no wind during the tournament making conditions exceptionally soft for a US Open. That's why it played a little "easier" in my opinion.

And nah in 04 the greens were literally like glass but only one of them really got out of control, they put water on it in between groups. The rest of them were just unbelievably fast, which helped to amplify just how unreal Retief goosen’s putting performance was. Guys were putting balls off greens all day while goosen went around with like 9 one-putts. It was ridiculous and he stole the Open from Phil with his flagstick. Of course Phil’s own flagstick cost him at 17, a hole where the speed of the greens finally exposed his less-than-confident putting stroke
