    Very informative. Don't forget to set up your LLC or whatever route you choose so you can claim your expenses otherwise your artist is just an expensive hobby. You would be amazed how many artists I know that don't save their recents. Also, you and your artist have to click. Other than their family and their homies, you are one of the few people the artist will trust. Trust is the key. You also have to be strong enough to put your feet down and not be afraid to tell them cold hard truth. Tough love.

      I'd like to act in different tv series and have a main role in a show. But if i wanna make it, i'm seeking for a good manager, that is trusting, somebody Who is out to help people, and not someone Who is only out for money. Someone that tells you to be yourself and help develop your talent.

    Hey Derrick good job on most tips.
    Additionally I suggest a course on Project management.
    This covers:
    Planning
    Initializing
    Executing
    Minitoring and controlling
    Closing
    A good manager wears many hats however, plan the work and work the plan.
    Example: in planning and in executing there is a lot of Risk Management involved. Such as "what do I do if something happens?" . Then you plan for the "what if" scenario.
    Also as a manager, comes negotiating, finance $$$ and many other aspects.
    I was a musician a while back and had to do a lot of leg work on our own. So having a background in music or if you play music truly helps when you work together with the artists as this comes in handing when marketing.

    i dont agree on everything. When it pertains to the Artist, the artist has to be willing to be lead as well cause sometimes Artist try do it there way or the highway. dont forget that in the beginning managers are investing time in you cause they believe in you so dont trat managers as if you (artist) doing them a favor.

    @Lanwarder Před 5 lety +2

    When I was four, I decided I wanted to be a songwriter. At age six, If finally had managed to 150$ this very questionable electric guitar (I love her to this day :)). I was lucky enough to grow in a home filled with music instruments. I never had any interest into learning other people's songs at first. When I got in highschool I received a more traditional music education, but still, to me it felt more like acquiring new skills/languages that I could use on my own songs. I've tried semi successful efforts to start bands from age 8 to 12. At age 14 I finally found what would become my real band......musicians came and left while we were learning what meaning in a band meant but it allowed me to grow as a songwriter.....We could find the right singers for our band and the since I was writing pretty much all of the music the other band mates insisted I I become the lead singer/songwriter.....As much as I love to learn by myself, I chose to take a vocal coach for a white and it helped me become more secure about my voice. Slowly things fell into places. I'm from around Montreal and we ended up recording 2 EPs, 1LP, play around 250 - 300 shows, shoot 2 music videos, etc.
    Unfortunately, for certain reasons, the band ceased to exist at that point. I then went through a series of very serious health related problems, some of them lead me to (legally) use painkillers. Losing the band, being in poor health condition and needing to take opiate addiction under control (I am not addicted to anything, but it was a tough task) were hard to do but I never stopped writing songs. I'm now 31. I have very talented friends willing to help me with the record I have in mind.......but my question at this point is, how do I build a fan base? Is there people out there still listening to what I can do? What should my next move be?
    I know it's a long message but if you happen to read it, I'd very much love to have your take on this. I've heard "follow your dream and somehow things will happen" to many times. I want to make things happen in this ever changing scene.
    Thanks for reading and answering if you happen to do so.
    Best regards,

    Say you’re managing an artist and he wants to perform at a certain venue. You make some calls and they tell you the price. Do you as the manager pay or does the artist? All assuming you’re not signed to a label yet.

    • @Artistshortcuts
      @Artistshortcuts  Před 5 lety +3

      You call venues and they tell you the price to perform or rent the place? If just to perform, you might be better off just partnering with a promoter, renting the venue, and throwing an event yourself (while allowing the artist to perform). That might have more upside than paying to perform at some one else's event. However, you have to show the value of the artist performing at the venue if you want to avoid coming out of pocket. If there is no value for them, then you or the artist will pay (depending on your relationship or what's in the contract, if you have one)

    Fully develop an artist is complex project A) Cost management B) PR, Marketing = Expensive and time consuming investment. Manager should posses smart skill set. U can not learn management skills as u go, that is false! By simple giving "Jo its amazing" is not well worked out strategy. U don't need a degree, but you need education and experience to manage an artist. Where shell it come from? A thin air? I call it education and + if you are not a talented musician yourself by nature and working only on intuition principle as a music manager...oh man you won't stay below the surface for too long in today's competitive market. wait...what did you say? Anybody can do it? Painful to listen. U mostly failed to give valuable advices. CZcams is full with such catchy videos.

    • @Artistshortcuts
      @Artistshortcuts  Před 5 lety

      There are tons of stories on the internet from managers that had no experience and helped an artist make it "big". PR & marketing doesn't have to be expensive or time consuming. And yes, anybody can do it.
