Starting a record label is a rewarding, yet difficult experience. Make sure that you have a passion for it. If it is something that you would do for free, then you will be successful if you work really hard. Keep your day job if you have one because this business is difficult and I would highly recommend having a business partner and start up money because it is not cheap.

Question? Where do the record labels get the money to sign on the artist in advance?
JAYPRINCE MORGAN since we are independent labels it may not be a good idea to give out an advance but a small reasonable signing bonus! Save the advance money for promoting, recording etc. Once money starts coming in then you’ll be able to do that if you still want too.

I started a label with my business partner and its not an easy task. Trust me we have a billboard charted on roster with us and it’s still challenging but we LOVE what we do and love to help get these artists charted and noticed. Link up bro

We just recently started our label with my partners. We funded the label from our own pockets. Each partner made a contribution. We tried so hard to think of ways we could get the funds to cover our expenses and we couldn't find any. We took the risk because we believed in the dream.

You can do more artists at a discounted rate when you are a label, and also get more benefits (at least with Distrokid, my distributor). All 5 of us can release unlimited music for $80/year.
