    Thank you for posting this. It’s the only video I could find with this engine. My rear valve cover was leaking pretty bad. The tip about the universal socket adapter was a life saver. I wish I could give you more than one thumbs up.

    Thank you for the video! Gave me the confidence to change my 2008 dodge grand caravan. Now hopefully I put everything back together. Haha

    Thanks for this video you saved me a fortune. The Previous owner put freaking permatex making it really difficult for me to repair, and the permatex got in my piston arms and got yanked in causing a hole in the valve gasket causing a massive leak and burn in the front one and loss of oil pressure and deceleration overall. Hopefully this helps.

      Hope it works out. It's amazing what people do sometimes when they don't know what they're doing...

    Thanks! But my front valve cover was sticking on even after unscrewing. Any easy way? I barely used a pliers to lever it off. Hard job .. and I didn’t get the 1/4 drive wrench and 5/16 deep socket bit but really need it!! Will buy it for rear cover... thanks!!

    Thanks Doc. Planning to do this soon. I also have a bad PCV valve I'll replace and would also like to do spark plugs and wires. Are the rear spark plugs accessible with the rear valve cover off? or would more need to come out, like the intake manifold?

    • @drsilverman
      @drsilverman  Před 5 lety +1

      You can do the spark plugs "blind" if the engine is cool and you have a good feel for working over the engine and "backwards." Just be careful when threading the plugs to avoid cross-threading them (they should go in very easily).

    Good info, though the video editing could be a bit fine-tuned. You do convey what somebody thinking about doing this would need though. Questions: Just to confirm, the original rubber grommets need to be "cut off" and replaced with new ones? Did you not use any RTV in the gasket grooves? Thanks

    • @drsilverman
      @drsilverman  Před 5 lety +1

      No, you should never use RTV on these gaskets (I know, it's weird). Ask at the parts store. As for the rubber grommets, they're most likely toast anyway. You don't want to have to do this job again for a while, so make sure that your gasket kit has new grommets included before you cut the old ones off.

    Do you have to take out the spark plugs to complete the job?

    • @drsilverman
      @drsilverman  Před 3 lety +1

      No. The only reason you have to remove the plug wires in the back is because they block access to removing the rear valve cover gasket. The plugs bolt into the block below the valve covers (at least on the Mk. V 3.3 engine). Good luck with your project.

      @drsilverman  Před 2 lety

      For the front or the rear? I guess it's possible (just not particularly easy). Did you record it?

    • @lsaiter8309
      @lsaiter8309 Před 2 lety

      @@drsilverman rear did not record it was fairly easy took off the air cleaner hose assembly for excess to left bolts and used a swivel for the top middle bolts

      Which part? The borrowed ITC intro is one of my favorites--the company produced "The Muppet Show" and "Space:1999", but is now out of business. But I have never forgotten the joy it always brought me.
