Thanks Jade for your reaction. We were in California for the 2016/2017 New Year and drove down to Santa Monica Pier where a Bubba Gump seafood restaurant is. We ended up going to the one in San Francisco. They had 'Run Forrest Run' signs on the tables and beer glasses which we purchased, with the Bubba Gump logo on. It was great especially after seeing the film.

Forrest made everybody's life better. The most touching example is Lt. Dan. In the last scene he was in, he called Forrest by his first name for the first time, while looking at him with a look of admiration and gratitude. He knew Forrest had saved his life in more ways than one.
He saved and supported so many lives!! ❤️💔

@@MovieJoob -- Jenny's not a bad person, she's a broken person. She was completely unable to love herself and couldn't understand that anyone else (especially someone as good as Forrest) would want to love her.
@Bruce Snell You can say that about any villain. Actions make a person what they are, even if they're broken. Jenny was most certainly a bad person.
@@LiberPater777 I see where you are coming from but I don’t agree with it. A bad person? The only person she hurt was herself…sometimes the odds just pile up against you and few can find a way out from under it.
@@banjoman101145 She took advantage of, exploited and hurt Forrest _multiple_ times. And, if she was willing to do that, God knows what she did to the other people in her life that she wasn't even close to.
She also potentialy infected Forrest and possibly even her own child with Hepatitis C. And, in the end, she saddle bagged Forrest with a child that might not even be his, because she knew he wasn't bright enough to question her motives. That's the crowning achievement and cherry on top of the turd cake that was jenny's character.
Many, if not most people are broken in this world. The majority come from F'd up backgrounds and horrible traumas. Forrest's character is a perfect example. And, in the end, that proves actions are what matter most.
Everyone has the choice to either be a pos, or to try be a better person. Or, at the _very_ least, to do their best to try and not pass on their traumas onto others.
Jenny on the other hand did the polar opposite. She selfishly caused pain and misery unto those around her for the majority of her existence. She only did things that suited her self centered lifestyle, leaving wakes of suffering behind her.
She chose to make bad decision after bad decision, over and over again, even when better paths were presented to her numerous, _numerous_ times.
She had a choice, and chose to be a bad person, no ifs ands or buts about it. And if there's any moral to this story, it's:
*'Be like Forrest, don't be like Jenny'.*
One of Tom Hanks' finest performances...that scene at Jenny's grave never fails to make me cry.

The character arc of lieutenant
Dan is my favorite of any movie ever.. to be so bitter and depressed, which is understandable, then to watch him work through it to the point of thanking Forrest.. boy it’s truly beautiful to watch

I never noticed that Lt. Dan wore a rosary around his neck, and then to feel he was cheated out of his destiny, he lost his faith. Forrest, instead of interrupting that plan as though he initially thought, helped Lt. Dan reconcile with God and life, and to keep pushing forward. What a powerful film
The character development of Jenny is also amazing... it isn't as noticeable because of her lack of screen time; however, she worked through her childhood trauma eventually and came to realize that the one good thing in her life was Forrest.
By the way, she left him because she was still struggling with her demons and didn't want to impact Forrest with them... or so I believe.
Also the fact that Lieutenant Dan marries a Vietnamese woman is a beautiful touch showing that he has left his hatred of the war behind
A detail I missed for literal decades, was why Little Forrest knew the bus driver's name ahead of time. Of course Forrest would have told his son about the day he met Jenny.
In an attempt to alleviate your confusion around Jenny's last actions, let me share my interpretations. Jenny first came back to Forrest when she was ready to begin to heal. Recall that he talked about how much she slept. She was at the very beginning of her recovery -- but she still felt broken and like she'd be a burden on Forrest, so when he reached out to her she ultimately recoiled and did what she always did: she ran away. While away, she learned she was pregnant and did the hard work needed to truly recover because, even if she wasn't worth the effort, her child was. In this time of healing, when she was finally on steady footing and felt ready to tell Forrest he was a father, she sent him a letter to come and visit her (so she could tell him in person about his son) -- but Forrest was running (and this was before mobile phones and the internet), so he didn't get that letter until he eventually stopped running and returned home.
I guess that's why his shoes are still dirty: he left again without taking the time to clean them.
She had already decided to straighten herself out before she left. She got away from Forrest to work on herself so she could feel.worthy of him. That's why she told the cab driver "I'm not running". She wasn't running away, she was determined to make herself feel worthy.
@@dr.burtgummerfan439 The movie doesn't really indicate, so it's a matter of opinion, but I personally disagree with you. I don't think Jenny had enough self-esteem yet at that point to be "selfish" enough to consciously decide to "work on herself" without Forrest with her as a crutch. I believe telling the cab driver "I'm not running" was simple denial.
@@bigdream_dreambig I agree with you. Jenny always ran because she could. She never felt worthy. She wished Forrest would move on because in her eyes he deserved better. She never wanted to "taint" Forrest with her "worthlessness". Once she became pregnant she was forced in a position where she couldn't run / abandon her & Forrest's child. Her only option was to stop running away and work on herself / support their child.
She got HIV, but back then they had no name for it. But she knew she would die, so she reached out because of his child, herself and him. So that she could make peace at the end and have the boy cared for. Of course the trauma played into it as well, but she died because of HIV.
The line "Sometimes, I guess there just aren't enough rocks." always hits me so hard
Gary Sinise’s performance as Dan Taylor is the most compelling in this movie to me, and a lot of it comes down to the details and passion Gary put into this role. The rosary and dog tags he wore belonged to Jack Teese, Gary’s brother-in-law. Jack served 22 years in the US Army, served 2 tours in Vietnam as a combat medic with the 101st, received 2 Bronze Stars for his heroism, and was twice awarded the purple heart for wounds in combat. The rosary and dog tags are the ones Jack wore in combat, in Vietnam.
Gary used this role as a springboard. He has deep familial ties to the military and after this role in particular he set about advocating for, fundraising for, and representing veterans and gold star families in a manner that few can match.
Cool, I didn't know that.
He is a true friend of the US Military.
He has a band, called "The Lieutenant Dan Band", and they do USO Shows and other activities that help US Veterans and their families 👪...
Sinise is a solid dude. A rarity when it comes to actors.

Jenny's behavior all throughout the movie is a reaction to her traumatic childhood. She knew Forrest loved her, and she knew he was a good man. What she didn't believe was that she was worth being loved by such a good man. So, she kept pushing him away and being mean to him to protect him from herself. It wasn't until she got herself sorted out that she could allow herself to be loved.
I totally got that and empathise with her horrific experience with her piece of garbage evil ass dad but I wish her actions could have been less harmful to Forrest along the way! 💔
@@MovieJoob - I always saw it in part as her trying to protect him from the darker aspects of the path she always found herself on. When it came to leaving the final time and keeping her pregnancy to herself, imagine what the local gossip would have been when the "ex-junkie screwup" (as she saw herself) shacked up - and had a kid - with the "town idiot" who had recently become very wealthy, and in that she was trying to protect all three of them.
I guess this is your generation but I never understood the empathy for Jenny when she consistently makes bad choices. The only victim in this movie was Forrest for being a good man. They don't say this in the movie but you can make a very good assumption that Jenny contracted HIV by having unprotected sex or IV drug using after she had Forrest Jr.
@@Possessedpappy It's more probable that she contracted it before. HIV usually take a long time, sometimes up to ten years, to develop into AIDS. Only about 25 % of unborn children contracts the virus from their mother, so little Forrest probably hasn't got it, but the unfortunate truth is that both big and little Forrest could be infected without knowing it.
However, we don't even know for sure that the virus in question was HIV, so this is just speculation of course.

Something to keep in mind is that Forrest ran for 3+ years without really staying in one place. She couldnt reach him until after he went back home.
She didn't even try to contact him.

@@Thomas-no9wy Also, and this could just be me doing some overthinking, but I like to think that the scene where Forrest gets all the letters he wrote to Jenny in Vietnam, is there to confirm what you just said. Jenny was also on the move and couldn't be reached, so we can assume it's the same with Forrest.
@@Thomas-no9wy It was a mirror of how all of Forest's letters during his war time didn't get to her when she was constantly wandering on the road.
One of the greats. Especially if you understand all of the history references. Toms performance is legendary as well. Just an incredible movie.

So many of Forrest's lines were just simple statements, nothing poetic or deeply profound. It's Hanks's performance and delivery that makes them so touching and memorable.
Unlike Forrest, Jenny did not grow up in a loving home. Her father abused her, and as she grows up she remains in a cycle of abuse with many romantic partners. Unable to understand Forrest’s unconditional love, she pushes him away repeatedly.
And once she experiences unconditional love with her son, she's finally able to be with Forrest.
Or she's just a drug addicted $loot,
She also didn't think she was worthy of love or was worried that she would drag Forrest down into her cycle of shit.
When you’ve been abused as a child, you either pull a Jenny, and enter a cycle of abuse with many partners, as you stated, or close of to most partners and have almost none, despite desiring one you can love and trust. The latter is the case for me, for better or worse.
@@ronweber1402 It took me forever to notice this. The way she says that Forrest doesn’t know what love is (to her it is sex), how he failed to have sex with her at college, but she never understood it until Forrest jr. Also, the running theme. She ran away from home. She couldn’t come back until she realized what love really was.
I think one of the reasons this movie is a timeless classic is because Forrest represents selfless love. Something the world is severely lacking at times.
The world needs so much more of Forrest Gump in it!

I have lately understood that Gary Sinise who played Lt Dan Taylor, has done a lot of work for war veterans and not just "oh I'm famous, I'll have a charity" but real work. Taken many, many millions from rich people to help soldiers with injuries and PTSD and all they need help with. So I salute Gary. Or not. Don't want him shot, do not salute. So you know. Thanks from Sweden to Gary.

Forrest's reaction to becoming a father hits hardest for me. Absolutely masterclass acting by Hanks. Like many others, I too am conflicted over Jenny's actions and treatment of Forrest, even if I do understand why she behaves how she does.
From Elvis to AIDS (or Hep C in the book) Forrest Gump is the chronicle of a generation; the historical touchstones, the music, the traumas we faced, and the philosophical questions we wrestled with. While much of Jenny's life was defined by the childhood trauma she endured, Forrest faced life as an innocent, never losing his perspective. It's always fun for me to see which historical events reactors recognize (like Watergate) and which have already mostly been lost to time (like the opening of China and the running craze which began in the 70s). Some schools are even using this movie in American History classes because it touches on so many bits of history.
By chance, do you know who the white guy with and Afro and American shirt is supposed to represent?
The guy who’s leading the protest in Washington, shown right before Jenny shows up running in the water?

The problem with Jenny, that some people probably not understand is that she, based on her past, probably thinks she didn´t deserve him.
All the time she was running away, she was fleeing from her past and herself. It is a very sad case of self-loathing. And often misunderstood.
Anyway loved your emotional reaction to this amazing movie.
That scene at the end with Forrest talking to Jenny under the tree just kills me every time. That....and when he realizes that Forrest Jr. Is his son. Damaged, every time.
Jenny was broken and both she and Forrest knew it. I think he just knew how to handle his feelings better.
It's sad that even though Forrest led a rich life, everyone he met or grew close to would die. Bubba, Momma, Jenny, Lennon, Kennedy..... it just adds another level of emotion to this movie/story.
The scene where forest asks if his son is smart is gut wrenching. The fact his is so aware he isnt smart and he is so clearly relieved when he finds out his son is smart is killer.
I've seen this movie a hundred times. It was very different seeing it through your eyes, I shed tears along with you. Great job jade!❤

I recommend looking into Gary Sinise as a person. He is a huge wounded warrior advocate and used this role to really help veterans around the world. Overall great guy

Nice heartfelt reaction. There is a significant difference between intelligence and wisdom. Forrest had the wisdom to focus on staying positive. His mind was clear of anything else. When Jenny left him, he felt the need to run.
Jenny only focused on running away her entire life. She never felt worthy of real love. She was always afraid she would damage Forrest if she stayed with him. Once she became a mother, she had no where to run. She couldn't abandon her & Forrest's son. She tried reaching out to Forrest, but this time he was busy running (for almost 4 years).
This movie is a history lesson of America from the 1950s to the 1980s. There are a lot of details that people your age miss but that resonate with boomers.

LBJ had gall bladder surgery and, in a famous press conference, lowered his pants and lifted his shirt to show the scar. Forrest acts in the same vein when he shows the scar on his buttocks.
Nixon’s Secretary of State actually did practice ping pong diplomacy to get China to open to the west.

Your reaction was on the money. Forrest may not score high on an IQ test but he has a good heart. Look at all the people today who worship celebrities, who want to be CZcams influencers. They aren’t worth a thing. If you find someone who is a good a friend as Forrest is, who loves you that sincerely, you will have won the lottery.

Vietnam War veterans who saw this movie said the battle scene was one of the most accurate depictions they had ever seen. Throughout that scene, you never see the enemy - they just attack from seemingly nowhere, protected by the dense jungle.
This movie always resonated with me because of my personality struggles. Wish there were more people in this world as compassionate as you. You’re a beautiful person.

I always enjoy your reviews :) Real quick, though, there is a very easy answer to the question of Jenny not telling Forrest he was a daddy ---- she couldn't because Forrest was off on his 3 year run at that time. One thing that always strikes me is the venom which so many people spew at Jenny when she finally asks Forrest to marry her. Certainly, they are all entitled to their own feelings, but as for me, I have always chosen to view her life path as having finally hit rock bottom and that she had likely gotten herself into a 12-step program and turned her life around. That was the reason she made that apology to him for having said and done some really messed up things.
The "venom" is 100% justified.
Jenny and Forrest both experienced childhood trauma.
Jenny used it as an excuse to act out, tank her life, take people along with her.
Forrest used it as motivation and did all the amazing things we see him do.
The reason I and many hate Jenny is because she had a chance to get clean, start over... She then emotionally abandons Forrest after sleeping with him and vanishes. (She literally was keeping tabs on him during the 3 years, and there were news casters/a cult following him, so the excuse of "she didn't/couldn't contact him" is BS.)
Then ONLY AFTER learning that she is dying from AIDs (Hep C in the book) does she reach out to Forrest and then convince him that this child is his, a child who more then likely ISN'T even his. That kid isn't 3, meaning that if that kid IS Forrest's she was pregnant BEFORE she ran away from Forrest and knew she was with child, making her that much more of a terrible fucking person.
She then of course marries Forrest, secures a comfortable life for her and her son before leaving all the emotional baggage and a kid with Forrest.
Of course in true SELFLESS Gump fashion Forrest loves the kid regardless of the situation and Jenny regardless of her constant abuse of him. Thats what makes this movie great. Forrest is the ideal dude. One that we should all strive to be like.
I just know personally I'll never get there because I would have left Jenny flat on her ass after the DC/Black Panther bit.
I think Jenny always thought that she would be taking advantage of Forrest if she stayed with him, like her father took advantage of her. She always loved him but thought he deserved better and only figured out that they were both worth each other's love when she became sick.
Or she isn't that deep...she knew she was dying (from Hep C in the book/AIDS in the movie) and wanted to use Forrest one more time, knowing that if she convinced him that it was his kid, that Forrest would take care of him forever.
Jenny is possibly the most evil character of any movie ever. (Childhood abuse isn't an excuse because Forrest suffered similar abuse and turned out perfect.)
If anything the movie/books show that regardless of your life situation, YOU have the power to change it, YOU have the power to shape it. Jenny played the victim. Forrest played pingpong.

Forrest is a movie I have seen a few times. It seems to get me centered again if my life goes off track.
Watching you watch it was just a joy for me because it reminded me how I felt watching it. I was crying along with you.
I guess it's main message is to stay true to yourself and everything else will fall into place.

Hurt people hurt people unfortunately answers most of the hows and whys of this movie. Fortunately, compassionate people heal people as we get to see with Forrest’s mama with him, and Forrest with Lt. Dan and even, eventually, Jenny. Great reaction to such a brilliant multi-layered film. Thank you!

Gary Sinise, who played LT Dan agreed with you about vets. After the movie he founded a (now very large) charity that helps vets including by building handicapped accessible housing for wounded vets. He also has done a lot of travel to war zones to entertain troops with his band.

By far the most pure reaction I've ever seen.
Forrest’s mother death was the saddest death scene. That’s the one that makes me cry like a baby.
I didn’t watch this move growing up. I was a kid who focused primarily on animated movies etc with some exceptions. It wasn’t until many random years later I decided to check it out, and saw how sad it was. And took noticed for it’s reputation for being this classic emotionally driven movie experience. I have to admit I haven’t watched you react to a lot of things. And seeing you being this soft or emotional to someone really shows who you are as a person Jade. I’m usually use to seeing you as somewhat of a badass nerd just having fun. 😂 It’s nice to see you really have a good heart too. ❤

life really is like a box of chocolate. some pieces are yummy and sweet, some are bitter, most are just ok but still sweet. when i first watched this movie, i felt the same way towards Jenny. but now I understand why she is the way she was. we all sometimes feel undeserving of love. We're all naive. That's what makes us human, and if we treat each other as human beings. the world would be a better place

When forest asked “is he like me? Or?” Always gets me.
The great thing about forest is that he’s a great listener and he does exactly what you tell him to perfection.
Your reactions are always super genuine, honest and compassionate. One thing that I think is sometimes overlooked in this movie is that Forest’s starting point for all of what he does is his faith in God. it’s one of my favorite movies and I’ve watched it many times and his Christian faith is inescapable from start to finish with “loving your neighbor as yourself“ clearly a roadmap for his life. @@FredVindicator His mom was largely a good role model because of her faith in Christ/God which she spoke of more than once. And when Forest spoke of Jesus it was because he assumed everybody knew him. Not because it was something he didn’t understand. He clearly would not have been the same character or person if he didn’t believe in the reality of God and basic Christian concepts of morality. That is a given in the movie, even though the producers themselves may not be believers.
@@rescuetweak Ok maybe I can concede on the mothers values being christian, but forrest mind is very simplistic, so I dont think he 'had found' jesus, Im inclined to insist in the notion he didnt know about it, the same way he thought he was looking for a guy named charlie.
More than religious values, I tend to look at this movie as the story of, on one hand, an upbringing with a loving parent, a christian one if you want to add it; vs an upbringing upended by abuse on the other hand. thats the difference between jenny and forrest
Forrest seems like the most wholesome and genuine Christian there ever could be. I studied Christianity in school and he is the epitome of what that religion truly teaches and treating others as you’d like to be treated.
It's a pretty common question as to why Jenny didn't let Forrest know he had a son. I think it's important to remember he was running for 3 years straight with basically no stops except to sleep and go to the bathroom.

As wonderful and as incredible as Forrest is, EVERYONE forgets he is still mentally handicapped. He doesn't have the full capacity to offer Jenny everything a relationship requires or is desired in a partner. He doesn't even understand what happened to Jenny with her father and her trauma, even as an adult. He can be unbelievably kind hearted and good-But he could never have been a true partner to Jenny, he would have been her lap dog and she didn't want that for either of them. She married him in the end to make HIS dream come true, and to help teach him how to be a parent before she died. Imagine marrying someone with downs syndrome, that would be a very challenging, one-sided relationship.
Wise words at the end. Think you nailed the entire point of the movie right on the head. Life is tragic, be a Forrest.

Most of these hot female CZcams reactors are such hypocrites when they judge Jenny, because they all have some sad sap nice guy who they have friendzoned and left longing for them. Jenny is a realistic portrayal of how hot (yet broken) girls treat sweet nice guys from their hometown.

Gary sinise is a national treasure. He's one of my favorite actors.
My Dad is a veteran of the Vietnam War, and he was spit on, as he flew home through San Francisco. I can't fathom experiencing that. I served during the Desert Storm conflict, and was treated like royalty whenever I traveled in uniform. So much changed, in just a single generation.
My uncle was in Vietnam his best friend was with him and he watched him blow up right next to him and he said that there was an orphanage or children hospital I don't remember which one it was he had said that got blown up and they had to walk through it looking at all the dead children, that messed him up for the rest of his life his mind was never the same and could not live on his own in his 40's he kept running off into the wood and his brother who was a cop kept going out and finding him to bring him back home but one time he could not find him another week went by and he finally found his body he died from exposure. It might have been a war we should have never been in but what war really is that is no reason to treat the soldiers in that way because it's not their fault it's the leaders who put us in wars that our soldiers have to go and defend us and other alley countries and the death of everyone involved is sad.

ANYWAY, i saw Forrest Gump in the cinema and was way too young to fully understand the movie, but later in life I really learned to appreciate it.
Even though it really hurts to watch it, because it stirs up so much trauma, I always held it dear to my heart.
Its crazy to think that this was your first time watching, not unbelievable, but I never encountered someone who didn't know this masterpiece, so it was a really wild ride to see your reactions!

Forrest had the right upbringing by his mom. I appreciate that she told him that he's no different from anybody else, instead of convincing him that he's special. People who think they're special tend to act entitled. She raised him to be a good, caring person.
This movie is a test of your humanity. It's also arranged and edited perfectly. Highs and lows are so satisfying.
One of the most important lessons about this movie is the juxtaposition between Forrest and Jenny
Jenny is an uncaring, emotionally abusive, self-destructive person who basically screws people over at every chance she gets. Granted this is often attributed to her childhood trauma/abuse...BUT
Forrest, who suffered trauma and physical abuse and who suffered from mental impairments NEVER let that stop him, even when EVERYONE told him he was stupid, or that something couldn't be done, he did it. Even after Jenny rejects him, abandons him, and finally uses him...the FIRST thing Forrest says when he learns that the kid is his isn't "Why didn't you tell me" or "Why did you leave?" or even..."How dare you!" it is instead..."Is he normal, or is he like me."
Forrest is the embodiment of selfless love. One we should all strive to be like, even in the face of monsters like Jenny.

Realized Forrest actually has a gift. He gets to live his life in the moment for the span of his life where as most people struggle with this.
He may have had a lower IQ but he still saved lives, had talent, became a successful billionaire had a family and never lost his heart and always knew what the right thing to do was now that's a good man.
As a person who have bullied as a kid, bullying friends and people hurts them but also hurts myself sooo much.
Because if there are not people able to bully around me, I have to bully myself.
So everytime I see bullying, I feel the trial that Both who Bully and bullied have to face in the presence and future.
I hope they overcome it...

Forrest's first pair of shoes, nearly all reactors don't pay attention and think his legs are crippled, not his crooked back. When you picked that up, I knew this would be a good reaction.
Interesting reference Gary Sinise (Lieutenant Dan) says on New Years eve "If you are a Shrimp boat Captain I'll be an Astronaut" and when he comes to Forest's wedding about his legs "There are Titanium, like they use on the Space Shuttle". Gary later played Ken Mattingly in the film "Apollo 13" . Mattingly later flew the Space Shuttle.

I really love the bait and switch they do with the tragedy in Forrest gump because they give you 3 stories the Girl with a broken wing, the best friend drafted into service who just wants to shrimp, and the hardass who wants to die. The girl dies before they ever get the chance to really be together, the best friend dies before he ever gets to live his dream, but the only one who wanted to die finds his peace and his will to live.
There are a lot of good movies and some great movies but this is the gold standard, it is original, it is pure, it is raw, it is heartfelt, it was masterfully done in a way we haven't seen in a long long time.
I saw this at a very low point in my life when it came out. One of the best movies ever.

Like most people in Jennys position she felt that from childhood that the bad things that happened to her was somehow her fault. And that she wasn't good enough to be loved, especially unconditional love. Because she would ruin their lives by being there and drawing them into her baggage.
