  • Cajun folklore claims that in the swamps and bayous of Louisiana are supernatural entities that appear to travelers in the form of glowing balls. Much like the well known will-o’-the-wisp, those unlucky enough to be lured into the trap of these fiery spirits are often doomed to an early death. They are known simply as le Feu follet.

    Hello Southern Gothic: The Podcast,
I am so very happy I discovered your unique and informative channel telling stories, history, reality and experiences of the American South. You definitely deserve more subscribers than you have now with the tender, love and care you put into putting together these eye opening podcasts. I can’t to watch and listen to the next episode.
I have visited New Orleans once back in 2016 and I had the time of my life in the Big Easy, an eclectic and historical city indeed. I hope I can return in the near future.
Before watching this podcast I had basic knowledge of the Cajun culture, but truly received an education on their time honored folklore. I have always been fascinated by the Creole and Cajun cultures and with just one podcast my knowledge and awareness has increased for a lifetime.
Keep up the phenomenal work! Your cultural and historical research, education, teaching, sharing and telling is definitely worth it.
    Thank you kindly,
    Erica

Me and my cousin saw 2 feufollet (foo-foe-lay) when we were duck hunting in Venice, LA. They were bright white lights high up in the sky moving erratically. We thought they were UFOs and I remarked that if they were airplanes then they wouldn't be able to make a 90° turn and then they began to make 90° degree turns. It was crazy. I don't buy the swamp gas explanation. Some things are just outside of our scientific paradigm. I've heard kabbalists call them angels of malcouth, or fallen angels like from the book of enoch.

My nephew and I seen one near the White Kitchen in April 2005 in the middle of the day. I found out the Feu Follet story in 09 I was just as freaked out when I heard the story as I was seeing it. Strangest experience of my life.

Thank you for another Louisiana story.
An interesting story from western Louisiana is that of Leather Britches Smith and the Texas-Louisiana timber war of 1912-1913. When Smith was killed, he was supposedly buried upside down and faces west so he could not be resurrected at the return of Christ. It is sad that only about 5% of Cajuns can speak fluent Cajun French.

I grew up in New Orleans and the North Shore but my grandparents lived in Sunset North of Lafayette. In the 80's and 90's as soon as you got over the Mississippi EVERYONE had a thick Cajun accent. It's not like that at all anymore it's sad. I blame the i-10,Cable TV & internet 😂
