    I remember the bruises from learning to kick-start my father’s Ariel Red Hunter. You only mess up finding compression the once, unless you want a broken leg. The bike is in my garage waiting for the dry weather. Sadly I can’t take my Father for a blast any more, c’est la vie.

    In 1970 there was a guy in the neighborhood that had an Electra Glide that he punched out to the max. He would let us all try to kick start that thing, it had so much compression that once in awhile it would kick back and throw ya over the handle bars!!! Good ol’ days💪💪💪

    • @kylenolanfilms4004
      @kylenolanfilms4004  Před 10 měsíci

      Lol , yeah, I’ve had that happen to me before too . I’d be 50 miles from home and it would “kick back” and throw me in the air a little and hurt my leg . Then my leg was hurt so I’m trying to have my girlfriend start it and it just holds all her weight without bringing the hammer down , lol. Then she tries pushing me and everything else ,lol. I made it home though. Right on Bud!

    Remember when they use to have kickstart contests at runs ? I always straddle my bike when kick starting, it’s the easiest method for me. To each their own when kicking.

    • @Motorsheep
      @Motorsheep Před 3 lety +4

      I'm pretty sure bodyweight plays an important factor. If you're big enough, you can just kick down and be done with it. But if you're skinny and on the short side like me (5'10" and about 150lbs at the time I owned my Ironhead), only chance you have is to build up some downward momentum with your whole body weight before hitting the starter, i.e. you gotta jump on it. And while jumping on it is possible when you're straddling the bike, it's a LOT easier to do standing beside it.

    • @dabprod
      @dabprod Před 3 lety +2

      Keith........Me too.

    • @Motorsheep
      @Motorsheep Před 3 lety +1

      @Scaryygarryy interesting. Technique probably plays a role, too. or maybe I wasn't fully committed to my kicks when I was just standing and straddling the bike..

    • @bottmar1
      @bottmar1 Před 2 lety +1

      @Motorsheep. Sorry, but you are not even close to being right when you say "it's a LOT" easier to kick start standing to the side to kick start. You have to raise your leg higher to get your foot on the kick pedal. That alone is harder. When straddling the bike, that is leaning on the side stand, your body is at the same angle so effectively you don't have to raise your foot/leg as high straddling it. You still can easily get directly over the kicker if you like but with less effort and both hands can stay on your handle bars. I see so many new-born bikers getting off their scooters at stop signs walking around, wasting other drivers time, taking longer to restart their scoot. I was riding a 45" Harley in 1963 when I was 13 years old and straddled to kick start. I only weighed 138 pounds 5 years later so I was even lighter at 13. You don't need to stand to the side to get all your weight on the kicker.

    My dad had a flathead, a knucklehead, a panhead, and two Indians. Never had to jump up and down from one side; get on the bike, hold it up with your left foot, kick with your right, you learned to do it right or you get thrown. The lost art is still apparently lost.

    • @kylenolanfilms4004
      @kylenolanfilms4004  Před 8 měsíci

      You do it your way and I’ll do it mine. You heard it start. How do you hold it with your left foot when the kickstand is already doing that. You can be thrown when you straddle it too. I’ve done it. Sounds like the biker in your family is your Dad …. not you.

    • @Thomasuki267
      @Thomasuki267 Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@kylenolanfilms4004 Jesus, a bit insecure? I don't claim to be a "biker", just a motorcyclist for about 50 years who has started a lot of non-electric large bore twins and singles. The point is, you can sit on the bike, stand on one leg, and start it, without jumping around on the right side with the bike on its sidestand. Of course you can be thrown if you don't do it right; the point is to learn the "lost art", right? Nothing wrong with jumping around if that's how you want to start it, you just don't have to. I wish you enjoyment riding in any case, old bikes can be fun.

    I don't understand how anyone thinks kick starting standing to the side is easier. You have to raise your leg higher that way because the scooter is leaning away from you. That tires you out MUCH faster. After kick starting for 57 years I'm not about to change to this newer 1970's way. I thought people would grow out of it by now.

      Yeah , you definitely should dress the part on a bike like this . It’s open belt , no guards , straight kick , straight pipes that are up sweeps and probably several other hazards, lol . Flip flops ain’t gonna get er done on this . A guy would hurt his self. I get a kick out of the people who don’t dress right too . One time of going down and sliding would change that forever, lol . I also found out years ago why we wear these chain wallets too . I looked down and my wallet was bouncing back n forth hanging by the chain . Right on Bud !
