Hey Peter! I'm watching your series since the beginning of your trip to the Panama canal. I'm really happy to see your community grow and it's amazing how 100% percent of your viewers like the content. Very few youtubers could say the same about their channel.
    Keep up the good work,

i would recommend getting some cycling gloves (fingerless, padded in the palm and bottom part of the fingers) to prevent blistering. they are a life saver for me when i go on kayaking adventures. i hope you're planning to bring along some kind of patch kit and a water bailer in case you spring a leak! good luck! looking forward to these videos :)

You probably know this, but be very careful on the Mississippi R. I lived in Kansas City for ten years of my life and there was never a time that that river was NOT full of branches, snags, whirlpools, etc. It's dirty and treacherous, so make sure that you have something to patch up your canoe and yourself if things go awry!
Good luck, though, I look forward to seeing the videos and all the people you encounter! You're an inspiration for travel...

A bit of practice navigating big wakes from barges and tugs and various other large ship wakes as Old Man River is full of them. Their wakes close in can be surf city. Maybe a canoe with an outrigger would be a good improv. Good adventure!

I think you should take an hour to review the different canoeing strokes, it will really come across as handy once you're actually doing the series. Going down a river can be extremely easy if you know how to maneuver efficiently. An efficient stroke is one where the entire flat part of the paddle is in the water. Alternating sides is not necessary if you're using the right strokes too. It's also easy to cross a river against strong current using the right technique! Have fun, I will follow you!

Pdrop - There are a few lakes that you may want to be aware of. Lake Pepin in MN is big, wide, and slower moving water. On a windy day you will see waves bigger than your Big Bear experience. I also saw the dams mentioned, but you should be aware that there are a $hitload along MN/WI alone. If you need a MN connection, let me know...

couple tips...watch out for sunburn on the top of your legs...been there
a longer canoe is more stable
learn how to portage your canoe properly...that means carrying the canoe on your shoulders upside down
in windy conditions the canoe bow acts like a sail...put rocks up front to keep the bow in the water
also you can kneel down on a cushion on the floor of the canoe and paddle.. more stable this way
practice in calm water...and good luck

I live in NE and I'm only 30 minutes away or so from the Missouri River and you might want to do some research on any flooding going on in the Mississippi River right now. The Missouri R is backed up in Joplin MS and up in Sioux City IA, coming down to Omaha NE. I think the Miss R looks wider on maps, but just to be safe. Would hate for you to get all the way over there and towns are evacuated on you for lodging / food needs.

also! when you paddle move with your whole body with the stroke so your arms don't get as tired and you go a bit faster. and if there are rapids get on your knees in the boat to prevent tipping and if you see a thing in the water that looks like a V don't go over it cause theres a rock there but if there's an opening like looks like ^ and upside down thats ok

    @lianasamo Před 13 lety

ah i am a canoe expert!! haha but really look up the ways to get the water out of the boat if it capsizes (you can either to a t rescue or a capastrami flip) you probably want to research the capastrami flip since you only have one boat i think? and the right way to paddle also, like forward, back stroke, draw, and push away and j stroke. (j stroke is for the stern) just google all this stuff haha GOOD LUCK! canoeing is the best:)

You REALLY need to work on your paddling technique. The majority of your effort should come from your core, not your arms. That allows you to save energy, and it will feel much better.
Also, try to learn a self rescue. It may be hard on a canoe, once they get bogged down you are trying to lift the whole river. I would look for a canoe that the ends could be covered to keep some of the water out.
    Good luck!
