    Recipe
    1 tsp Linseed oil
    1 TBSP Mineral Oil (Baby Oil)
    1 and a 1/4 tsp Beeswax melted (This is a change from the 1 TBSP)
    1 Stick Oil Pastel
    2 tsp mica powder. You can adjust this if you want to decrease the pigment. Add a drop more Beeswax if you do.
    Directions
    Step 1.
    Chop up the oil pastel into very small chunks (Mince)
    Step 2
    Mix in the Mineral Oil and Linseed Oil into the Oil Pastel. Mix in mica powder. Let it stand for at least an hour to 3 hours while mixing occasionally. You can't over mix. You can leave it longer than an hour. I have let it sit for a full day. It won't go bad. If it gets dry, just add a few extra drops of mineral oil. It should look like a liquid paste. Thinner than toothpaste, thicker than water.
    Step 3
    Heat up about an inch of water to a boil. Using the bottom of a tin can (I use a soda can). You can use aluminum muffin tins too. Place the mix into the can and then the can into the water. It will float and create a double boiler. Do not heat the mix directly on a flame. Put the heat down so the mix stays warm to slightly hot. Do not boil the mix. It should not be hot enough to burn you if spilled. This is a project for adults. Children need supervision. Make sure you use adequate ventilation. Do not cook the mix. Melt slowly and gently. Do not leave the pot alone while on the flame. It's no different from making candles. Use all the same precautions.
    Step 4
    Melt down enough beeswax to add 2 tsps to each can. You can remelt and reuse the beeswax. Don't throw out the can.
    Step 5
    Once the oil/pigment is melted down, take it out of the warm bath and mix. Mix around 3-4 minutes until it thickens. Once it thickens put it back in the bath and melt it down again. It should take around 60 seconds.
    Step 6
    Remove the oil/pigment from the bath and add 1 and 1/4 tsp bees wax. Mix again until thicken begins. Put it back in the bath for around 60 seconds. Keep mixing. Remove from the water and pour into your container.
    This is a very pigmented mix and will thicken slower than the pencil base paste. Do not pick it up. Leave it for around 15 minutes and then you let it cool down. It's ready to use in about an hour. It will be softer than the pencil base paste.

    Lori, this was awesome. When you colored the bottom left, the beach scene, I literally saw the perspective change as you colored. I've never done that with a work of art. It was freaky.

    OK, tonight I'm starting my foray into the original (paler) base paste, using a cream color and a pale grayish blue and the gallery pastels. So far, they are chopped up finely and soaking in the oil in disposable aluminum muffin tins that I cut each cup out of. In the morning we'll do the melting and beeswax part. I'm starting to color in a book now, and want to add a nice background, if possible. I'll do my set very slowly, and may decide on doing the more vivid color recipe with mica added with the brighter color pastels.

    Hi Lori! Hearing you mention the weather in Vegas makes me curious if you miss New York. I can't imagine living in a place that has wind storms. When I was a little girl a tornado came through our neighborhood. I hate any type of storm. Anyway, I absolutely love the picture you left outside! It looks like a photo. You're such an inspiration! All of these make me want to try it. Thanks for all you do and share with us! 😘

      Yes, I miss NY a lot, but I like the storms here. It's could be bright blue skies and we get wind that would knock trees over in NY. I miss NY Winters. Vegas winters are so mild you would think it's like Fall in NY. I don't own a jacket. I have a warm sweat shirt. We may get a few days down in the 30's but not much colder than that and it always warms up the next week. I miss NY hurricanes. I know I am weird.

    This stuff may be the answer on how to color my Bob Ross coloring book, it's horrific, I was mad about it. But I can see this would greatly improve my situation.
    I don't feel so bad now, I thought I was the only one who skipped around pictures

  • @tiabeaniesemotionalsupportdmon

    That’s it… I’m DEFINITELY making Base Paste!! Thank you so much for sharing these experiments with us!! Also, I just wanted to say that pic that was blowing around outside reminds me of that scene from season 4 (I think) of Stranger Things where Will comes out of the arcade and sees that HUGE monster in the distance… the only thing missing in your pic is the creature!!♥️♥️

    Amazing drawings!
    I saw cold wax medium being used as a sealant, the person using it said it also dries in 24 hours, and it made me think of Base Paste.
    CWM + pigment = base paste?

    Lori, I remember a while back you were talking about the strathmore Bristol vellum. Is it the 400 or 300 series that’s better? Which one should I buy?

    • @ColorMyWorld
      @ColorMyWorld  Před 2 lety

      Are you talking about the pastel paper? It comes in a pack of around 24, is multi colored and goes through your printer really easily.

    • @colorecstasy6673
      @colorecstasy6673 Před 2 lety

      @@ColorMyWorld I don’t think so. I actually think it’s just called Bristol strathmore Bristol was it 400;or 300 you said it was your fave paper

    • @ColorMyWorld
      @ColorMyWorld  Před 2 lety

      @@colorecstasy6673 I use the mixed media. 300 series. What medium are you using. The mixed media is good for most things, but they put out paper specific for things too. I have really been loving the pastel paper for pencils. So much tooth but it doesn't come in white that I can find. I need to do a shop at Blicks and check them for it. I like the pastel paper for the tooth and the fact it goes through my printer easily. The 400 does not. I use that for original artwork.

    Can you work with the foundation colors in layers? Do they work above other colors, like pastels, acrylic paint or above color pencils? Thank you for sharing you expirience. As soon as I can I will try them myself, is not posibble jet.

    • @electrichen6243
      @electrichen6243 Před 2 lety

      There is a hierarchy of art mediums which starts with water based mediums, but I can't remember the rest of the order. Wax is a resist so you may have to experiment.

    • @ColorMyWorld
      @ColorMyWorld  Před 2 lety +1

      They work nicely above pencil. They work best as a single layer, but the more pigmented version blends with each other beautifully. The trick is to be fast. Don't let it dry or it doesn't work in layers.

    When you say beeswax, that’s the wax you put over a jar of jelly to seal? The oil can you use baby oil?

    • @ColorMyWorld
      @ColorMyWorld  Před 2 lety +4

      I have used baby oil or mineral oil. Same thing different smell. They squeeze babies and add their scent to the baby oil. I don't know what wax they put over a jar of jelly. Sorry. I have all the links in the description along with the full tutorials.

      @@ColorMyWorld It's an older person thing on jelly. We melt the wax for canning and when the jelly is cool and firm we pour the wax on top and it seals it for storage instead of lids.

      The wax sealer used for jams and jellies is paraffin wax. Very dangerous to work with. My godmother was mortally burned with it when her apron caught fire.

    • @ColorMyWorld
      @ColorMyWorld  Před 2 lety +1

      @@mookzmom No I would not recommend paraffin wax either. The melting point is much higher and it's a harder wax.
