    As someone else mentioned, the fibrous stuff is probably just used to hold the edges of the interior veneers together to make up the required length or width of the sheet. My degree is in Wood Products Engineering but long retired and I don't keep up with all the newer product lines but I used to represent Allied Plywood, headquartered out of the Boston area. At the time, they were the sole importer of Baltic Birch and it was all manufactured in the Soviet Union. Russia has untold miles of nearly pure birch forests in the taiga and all the plies were their species of birch, hence the weight and strength. Standard size was 5' x 5'. The only similar product was Finnish Birch, almost certainly the same species, differentiated because the 2 most inner plies ran lengthwise, resulting in an even total number of plies.

    In Australia, we have predominantly 2 types of plywood
    1. Radiata pine plywood (from AU & NZ), which yellows over the years and
    2. Huon pine plywood, which is a pail white colour that is stable and is lighter than radiata (which is important if you are building a Tiny House on Wheels)
    3. Recently, other types of ply, such as Baltic Birch, have been imported, but the price point is prohibitive

    I'm glad you found a way to be at home more with your special family. My wife and I are adopting our special needs grandson. We were blessed that she could retire early to meet his needs. I have a few years to go. Although spending time with him in the shop can be a struggle. Seeing his smile as he helps Grandpa with the simplest task warms my heart

    I’ve used Appleply - ordered it direct from the company and paid for the shipping. Great stuff! However, now I tend to use EuroPly. It can be ordered through Home Depot in both 1/2” and 3/4” in Maple and Walnut veneers. They don’t come in full sheets from HD, though - I can’t remember all the sizes, but 2’x8’ and 4’x4’ I think are available. Great stuff, lots of plies and I have not had problems with voids.

    3 Nov 2023 - Couple of things.
    1. Went to Hood Distribution today to get some plywood and, apparently, the prices you found are no longer available. The cheapest half-way-decent piece of plywood they offered me was Chinese made 7-ply at $41.00 a sheet.
    2. I got the impression they only wanted to sell to businesses and not private individuals. They agreed to sell to me when I said I wanted to buy in quantity.
    3. Told me over the phone that they had a discount of quantities over 20 sheets but didn't give me the discount when I arrived for pickup.
    4. Their normal customer pickup hours are 9:00 to 12:00 which seems a strange way to do business.
    This is in no way a reflection on you. I appreciate the research and hard work you did putting this, and all of your other, videos together. I also admire your entrepreneurial spirit and I wish I had your gift-for-gab. Thanks for your hard work. Keep it up.

    Chris, thanks for the "in depth" view of what our plywood is made of. I worked in Indonesia many years ago and watched freighters unload trees that were sometimes over 5' in diameter and was sickened to know that as these rafts were formed and pulled into the small cove, it would be the last time anyone recognized the pieces as trees and the output coming out of the loading area was tons and tons of plywood.

    Thanks Chris for showing us the insides of various different plywoods. It’s amazing that the big box store stuff is so bad! I bought a couple of sheets way back when as I thought it was good. But it’s horrible! Baltic is definitely the way to go, but that stuff out of Vietnam looks pretty interesting. I’d be curious on the Tiger Wood how that stuff holds up! Looking forward to more quality content from you!

    I think the nylon fibers are likely a tape that is being using to keep multiple layers edge to edge before the final glue up.

    • @stevesclocks
      @stevesclocks Před 10 měsíci

      This seems like a possible reason. The plywood factories could peel a log into huge sheets and join them using tape into even longer continuous sheets. The tape seams are rare and have no effect on the final strength. It was probably a coincidence that it showed up in one certain brand. They probably all have them.
