    I feel like the easiest explanation for the fallout 3 sniper rifle's low durability is simple. Being a purpose built sniper rifle from pre-war, it likely uses rather complex internal mechanisms which were never intended to be fired so often without regular maintenance, especially in such a hostile environment like the wasteland.

    • @MitsukiTakeda
      @MitsukiTakeda Před rokem +89

      Whereas the New Vegas ones are in a less harsh wasteland and are likely better maintained, if not some of them also being factory new stock. The Fallout 3 ones are probably very poorly maintained so they can't get up to the same durability level as New Vegas' Hunting Rifles. Wouldn't surprise me in universe if they're effectively only maintained to 50% Durability compared to some of the more civilised parts of the post war wastes due to a lack of proper, new, spare parts and cleaning agents.

    The black powder rifle becomes very viable if you have nine of them assigned to your favourites… you can throw out single-shot kills for as long as you can switch to another loaded gun. You need to be strong to carry it all, and it’s quite funny to think of your character running around with NINE blackpowder rifles slung over their back. It’s not really a viable build, but it is quite a bit of fun.

    "Ol' Painless" was a bit of a meme long before Predator. You could find numerous mooks in cartoons and minor stories with guns called Painless, the obvious reasoning behind the name being that the bullet would end the target's life before he could feel pain. That's what made Ol' Painless as a chaingun a dark joke: a chaingun doesn't kill with a single bullet and, while you wouldn't live long if that thing raked over you, you would definitely be in agony.

    I was on my way to Novac one day on my no fast travel character and was pondering the difference between the way guns work between FO3 and FNV. What I came up with may or may not make sense. Remember that in FO3 you're playing as a teenager. The Courier is a seasoned, maybe even old, veteran of the wastes. They know more about guns than a teenager who grew up literally shooting a BB gun. Thus what we see in FO3 is representative of that person's level of understanding of gunny guns that gun. They get good enough in their way to kick ass, but the Courier can just get better. They get the nuances of ammo types and proper sight picture and shot placement. I'm guessing, but sounds good. Right? I finally put my theoretical degree in small arms arts to use.

  • @the_inquisitive_inquisitor

    In general, the only difference between a hunting rifle and a sniper rifle in real life is your target.
    The "hunting rifle" in FO4 most often resembles an "Oberez pistol" made by cutting a bolt action rifle so it can be fired with one hand.

    • @drivanradosivic1357
      @drivanradosivic1357 Před rokem +4

      given that is in the post war Wasteland, I can see people wanting Obrez pistols over nothing. Although the pipe guns should have been made better designed(and even include 3d printed weapons, plastic and metal) with makeshift weapon variants like the crude blowback and the makeshift anti material rifle from mods.

    • @failkingofguitar559
      @failkingofguitar559 Před rokem +8

      @@drivanradosivic1357 don't forget, there's a global resource shortage. Plastic does exist and is used, but it's likely much cheaper and more common to use wood furniture than plastic. 3d printing may or may not be a thing in the fallout universe but I won't comment for lack of knowing. Pipe weapons were a mistake. A fun idea in a vacuum but the devils advocate in my head won't stop screaming "you're gonna blow off your hand using that"

    • @drivanradosivic1357
      @drivanradosivic1357 Před rokem

      @@failkingofguitar559 Agreed, personally the wood and metal aesthetics are cool for me.
      Pipe guns, make the bolt on the other side and you solve most issues(same for the rest of the guns). If made more practically, they could serve as early game weapons platform(have them for low caliber weapons and something like a Varmint rifle for a proper lower caliber bolt rifle & a Lower caliber Combat Rifle made better as a early game thing, with better mid and late game weapons to represent improvement), and have other things be a niche for other stuff(Makeshift Anti Material rifle mod makes sense for a high caliber early game weapon, not conversion of pipe bolt gun into .50 cal) which would work better.
      3d printing could be a thing, the Workshop DLC practically has a machine that is something similar in concept but that makes things with ANYTHING instead of just a dedicated plastic station maker. although if we did have it, a way to have plastic mods for many weapons as well as to print out parts to make a weapon would be interesting. Actually, a series of machines where you make parts of a weapon would be cool and then you complete it at a workbench would be great.
      I think I answered the Pipe gun stuff first. Making them practical is for the best, but making better alternatives like the Crude Blowback is even better.

      @@drivanradosivic1357 I wasn't going to mention the Sierra madre vending machines at first, but upon reflection, that's not necessarily "3D printing" but I'll say it's close enough. The way they work isn't really explained and there's only theories floating around, but the idea that the chips are printed with common elements used to construct requested items is a personal favorite of mine. Rather than filament, the chips are broken down to their constituent elements and used instead, allowing you to print out of more than just polymers and metals

    For the fallout 3 hunting rifle reason it might be in .32 is some trader or builder rechambered the rifles to a pistol caliber for less recoil given how wired together the rifles are besides a possible plethora of what I belive to be .32 acp.

    noticed a slip-up when talking about the hunting rifle in fallout 4;
    you said the 50cal mod gives the gun slower reload times, but it actually gives faster reload times.

  • @Theegreygaming
    @Theegreygaming Před rokem +2

    out of curiosity, does changing the black powder rifle from cap-lock to flint-lock change it's reload animation? because... it sort of should...
    now that I'm watching you go through the firing animations on the varmint rifle, it is sort of pointless to have a thumbhole stock and then wrap your thumb over the top while firing.
    I the magazines becoming longer, but not gaining ammo capacity is actually pretty easy to explain, but still dumb that it works that way. so the tube magazine requires a spring loaded plunger to push the rounds to the rear of the rifle for feeding, but that spring, still requires a minimum amount of tension to be effective, so if the sole survivor extended the tube but doesn't have a sufficiently long enough spring, he would have to add a plug behind the spring effectively reducing the capacity back to base. many hunters drop their shotgun capacity down to the absurdly low 2 round max required for waterfowl hunting in the U.S. by plugging the tubes to reduce their capacity. this then sort of begs the question why the sole survivor would bother adding the weight of the longer mag since there would be no increase to capacity, but hey, it's a viable explanation none-the-less.

    The black Powder rifle with multiple barrels would it inspired from a Knox cannon or something, a small caliber gun that had 8 or 9 barrels and could easily bruise or dislocate your shoulder if you were not careful whilst shooting it?

  • @tateranus4365
    @tateranus4365 Před rokem

    2 things, you personally gave me your black powder rifle in 76, 2 one time I shot a 45-70 and it about broke my shoulder, somehow a sadist decided to make a 45-80, then again that wasn't even the worst gun to fire, that would probably be some early shotguns, they could have 7 barrels, usually 12 gage they all fired at once, they eventually stopped making them because of their tendency to break bones, it was common for the center to be used for housing the ramrod, the only thing helping the recoil is the ungodly weight of the barrels

    The Winchester model 70 is definitely not a generic hunting rifle. Its one of the best bolt action rifles ever made. Carlos Hathcock, a legendary Marine sniper used a Winchester model 70 along with other weapons during his time in Vietnam.

    I wish the hunting rifle in 4 was better. Also that the .38 conversion gave some sort of boost. Maybe MORPHIFYIN' it into a semi auto (somehow...) having basically no recoil, a higher critical build up, lower vats cost but a low magazine and weaker shot to balance it out.

    • @DaDunge
      @DaDunge Před 4 měsíci

      The boost is being a decent gun which fires the otherwise useless .38 ammunition.

      It's not useless, it's magically turns into caps. same with flamer and 5mm, which, will be more than enough to not have to use a weapon that's suuuuuper weak. I'd appreciate it if there was ever an actual NEED to conserve ammo, like a survivalist mod or something. @@DaDunge

    The real world reason for why the fallout 3 lever action shoots pistol rounds could be becuse that model of lever action does not have a strong enough action to handle the chamber pressure of any of the rifle rounds that were out at the time

    I like to think all the seemingly out of place guns like the AMR are the result of designs converging in the future, and allies having standardized arsenals. Would make sense for the gun designs of the far future being so good that various countries just say "screw it" and use each other's guns.

  • @MagraveOfGA

    For the record, .308 and 7.62 are basically the same cartridge... though usually .308 is more powerful.
    You can use 7.62 in .308 weaons but you cant necessarily use .308 in a 7.62 gun.
    Same concept for .357 mag and .38 special, .44 mag and .44 special, 5.56 and .223 etc.

    Also regarding The Dragon 2 and 3 star variants aren't legacy but rather rifles with the OLD explosive effect are. Old as in dealing a set amount of damage per explosion rather than a % of the weapons damage I think. Or maybe it was in reverse? I don't recall
