The Silver Shroud has huge parallels with The Shadow, including the radio plays that feature in the game.
I was coming to say that. And the grey ghost.
Yes, I was surprised he wasn't actually mentioned.
Everyone forgets about The Shadow. I don't know about Dick Tracy, but batman is essentially a ripoff off the Shadow.
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!
My exact first thought, as well.
Yeah, I came here to say pretty much this. Lamont Cranston is much more the inspiration than Dick Tracy, IMO.
Dear radking: could you make a video on everywhere the bombs hit during the great war/ were intended to hit?
That's a good idea
It would be a great video
He did made a video on the most bombed places in Fallout.
the most bombed places, yes, but not every area that was hit by the Great War
I would wanna hear about it
Great idea and W pfp
The Silver Shroud is almost literally The Shadow. Down to the scarf and radio play. The intro of the radio play is almost the same as the original The Shadow one.
"When evil walks the streets of Boston, one man lurks in the shadows. Shielding the innocent. Judging the guilty. That guardian is... the Silver Shroud!"
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!"
Not "literally".
Biggest difference:
1 Thompson vs 2 1911s
@@Smorgasvord The similarities are so painfully obvious. Whoever made the Silver Shroud was clearly a fan of The Shadow and old radio dramas. The design barely makes any attempt to differentiate from its inspiration.
@@zenoblues7787 Yea, but you used the word "literally" incorrectly though.
In some ways he reminds me of the spirit
There is someone you failed to mention when talking about the Silver Shroud, and that is The Shadow. He dresses more like The Shadow than Dick Tracy, and the Shadow had no qualms about killing. He even had a catch phrase to strike fear in the hearts of his enemies.
Yeah! The Silver Shroud screams The Shadow… the costume is almost identical!
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow Knows!
I also came here to say that The Shadow is the most obvious inspiration for The Silver Shroud.
Silver Shroud definitely has some Dick Tracy but he has WAY more parallels with the Shadow. The Batman parallels mostly come from The Shadow as well since Batmans Creators were "inspired" by him
The Warmaiden of Mars is a reference to the Princess of Mars series, more commonly known nowadays as John Carter of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Gotta say, IMHO, the biggest influence on the Shroud is the Shadow. The Shadow has the trenchcoat, fedora, and red scarf covering his face, sticks to the shadows, uses a tommy gun, has been in radio plays, comics, movies, video games, and films, and a bunch of other similar tells. I'd also say that The Spirit could also have influenced the Shroud as well.
Doesn't the shadow usually pack 2 1911s...?
@@NoFlu I was going off this image: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shadow#/media/File%3AThe_Shadow_(character).jpg
K.D Inkwell is at least partially inspired by the character The Doctor from Dr. Who.
As they both travel through time and K.D's Atomic Quill is visually similar to The Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver which is his iconic gadget.
"What evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows" AKA another inspiration for the Silver Shroud :)
The Fallout 4 radio mod "Old World Radio 2" has a station called Repconn Radio hosted by Captain Cosmos and Jangles (he had become a ghoul and Jangles was mutated by radioactive water to become intelligent and capable of talking.) Their conversations with each other are pretty funny. The station itself plays some old sci-fi radio plays and has clips of old Captain Cosmos shows. (Made up by the mod authors of course, but it's an excellent mod all around.)
The green hornet seems another obvious inspiration, but not one that would be as popular.
One of my favorites.
That "Warrior Maid of Mars" reference is probably closer to a John Carter of Mars/Dejah Thoris reference. John Carter is kinda like a scifi adventure story counterpart to Conan, with a red martian princess that does end up being a warrior in her own right in some media
I believe that the silver shroud may have been inspired by The Shadow.
May have been? that's an understatement
One other very small detail about the Silver Shroud. His butler's name is Jarvey. Tony Stark's AI assistant is Jarvis, named after their household Butler from his childhood..
Yeah like a bunch of other people said in the comments, the Shadow is a very obvious inspiration for the Silver Shroud.
31:04 the Egyptian artifacts angle could be a number of things but Hawkman does stand out as a possible inspiration, especially the Carter Hall version
5:56 the Shadow feels like a good possible inspiration for the shroud. Not only one of the influences who inspired the Batman but also one of the most popular noire series and radio plays.
I’ve also seen an analysis comparing the Shadow to early depictions of the G-men stereotype for federal agents in media.
Y'all, I think he might be aware of the Shadow/Shroud parallels now 😅
Revenge of the Mansurian is most likely a reference to Sauron of Marvel, a half man half pterodactyl/ dinosaur whom Conan would frequently fight in Marvel comics centered around the Savage Land
Seeing that cover of Grognank in the Bosom of the Corsair Queen totally seems like an homage to the Simpsons when Marge is fantasizing over a romance novel.
Marge: "My, these seas certainly are heaving!"
PIrate: "Well, no more than your bountiful bosom, m'lady."
The Silver Shroud was inspired by The Shadow, unlike the shroud he used to carry twin browning hi powers 😊
K.D. Inkwell has major Doctor Who vibes.
Exactly what I was thinking as well.
also a bit of star trek in there
I think that in addition to being an obvious copy of Conan the Barbarian, he also takes inspiration from He Man, as the two are both muscular warriors who use a large weapon. Grognak’s villain being a necromancer named ‘Greylock’ seems like a reference to He-Man’s Skeletor and he-man’s castle Greyskull. As well as the fact that as you said there is a He man comic about Terror-dactyls. In addition while Conan the barbarian is not blonde, He man is, so it seems like Grognak is a combination of Conan and He Man
Always thought the Silver Shroud had more in line with The Shadow
The Silver Shroud is more likely to be inspired by the 1930's comic and radio play hero "The Shadow" who was a detective-esque Superhero who wore a black trenchcoat and fedora with a red scarf, often pulled up over his face. Although he weilded a pair of 1911s his methods and tactics are very reminicent of The Shroud.
He was also an inspiration for batman.
The silver shroud looks more like the shadow to me
the mistress of mystery reminds me alot of batman mythos stuff, especially stuff with the al Ghul family. Also the litteral batcave that she has is kinda on the nose there too.
I'd like to thank Grognak for giving me the only melee weapon I ever use, and the confusion as to why a real, steel, sharp and combat-ready axe prop was made for the TV show.
Fallout America; OSHA and the like clearly are not a thing; cause, y'know, that's commie twatprattle
I believe it was meant as a replica, a very good replica
It's Fallout.
They're about ~20-30% stupider than we are.
One thing to note about Captain Cosmos. The ads for the pre war show states that it was aired on Thursdays at 8:00pm EST, which is most likely a nod to the original Star Treks time slot of Thursdays at 8:30pm EST.
Hope you enjoy this coment that didn't mention that one pulp era detective that wore a trench coat and fedora.
The Silver Shroud also shares parallels with The Shadow and The Phantom. You can also go way back to the first incarnation of Batman where he wore a fedora and had a gun he didn't mind using.
The mistress kinda sounds like moon knight
I mean the fallout protagonists can definitely be classified as superheros with the inhuman feats and accomplishments they pull of like the courier single handily tipping the scale or braking the scale of the ncr and legion conflict and having the opportunity to carry like 30 gold bars
K.D. Inkwell heavily reminds me of doctor who with all the time traveling and her version of the sonic screwdriver
Sounds like it'd be a pretty fun show, honestly.
Honestly I wasn’t until I found the Silver Shroud script in Hubris Comics that the Shorud convinced me that there needs to be actual comics about these guys, like the line “Death has come and I am it’s Shroud!” goes so unreasonably hard.
Oh man the Silver Shroud is my favorite. I always keep the costume & The explosive Tommy gun(Spray & Pray) in my inventory. Plus the Shroud lines in the quests are a bonus for me lol 😂. It’s a shame that the silver Tommy gun doesn’t have a legendary effect.
It could have had a ricochet legendary effect. Missed shots will bounce off of walls and into enemies behind cover.
I think after silver shroud quest it would be a good idea if it would unlock radient quests, you go to the ghoul dude and gives you someone to kill or listen to the radio.
New RadKing video = better sleep tonight
Better sleep = more video to watch tomorrow
How could you not mention the Shadow? the Silver Shroud is a near one to one rip off of the Shadow
It's a good day when Radking uploads 🎉
The Silver Shrowd is based of The Shadow, who wears a black trench coat, red scarf, black cowboy hat, and a black and red cape. He weilds a pair of 1911s, and a tommy gun. He also has magical powers and has death related catch phrases. He also had agents who were regularl people that would inform the shadow, supply him with resources, and would dress as him to convince his enemies that he isn't his secret identity, LeMont Cranston. He also had a chick interested in him, and predates both Batman and Dick Tracy. His writer was familiar with Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard. Conan's writer, and the two were part of a team.
The twist at the end of the Silver Shroud play is more likely foreshadowing Father being Shaun, I think.
Now we need a video on the magazines of fallout! I really wanna hear you dissect these amazing sheets of paper in the name of Glorious Atom! Praise be to Division!
I definitely see some of The Shadow, an old radio hero, in the Silver Shroud. And He-Man in Grognak.
Happy Radsgiving to all who celebrate!
I really wish they would have made side quests for all of the heros.
Grognak was Nate's favorite.
Nora getting esoteric powers would be awesome considering the Lovectaftian influence on multiple quests.
I do wish we'll get more superhero costumes with their signature weapons like for Mantaman he has wrist blades that can definitely be an unarmed weapon
La fantoma is also a reference to the phantom
I got back into 76 and I themed my character around the Silver Shroud, I got super into what little superhero lore I could find, and I was genuinely disappointed that I couldn't find any videos on it. This video appeals to an unbelievably specific fixation so thank you!!
I’ve been binge watching your videos and it’s crazy to see how far you’re content has come definitely my new favorite fallout channel
my headcannon is that the silver shroud built up an immunity to bullets fired by the silver smg specifically
literally one of my favorite creators. makes content on one of my favorite games and when i can’t sleep i put one of his vids on and i’m out like a light
Jungle of the Batbabies might be a reference to this old newspaper gag where someone airbrushed a kid's photo to look like a batbaby
That "Visit the Un-Ron Galaxy" Cover kind of looks like it is inspired by the artwork of Mobius, at least shares similarities with a Phantom Menance-themed piece he created. Great video Radking!
Dude this is a cool video perfect timing too needed something to watch today thanks man!
Love watching all your videos but I gotta say the part at 45:55 where you walk up right in front of the BOS guy, vats target lock, and completely miss with every shot was hilarious. Least I'm not the only one that has vats do crazy stuff at times.
Rather than rib you for missing the connection to The Shadow, since everyone else has too, I'm going to point out that the Mexican version of Fantômas (Fantomas for ctrl+f users trying to see if he's been mentioned) is an obvious parallel for La Fantoma, with both being thieves from Spanish comic books (Yes, I know he was created by the French, but since the Mexican Spanish version of the character differs so much, is actually a comic book character, and could vaguely be described as a "hero" instead of wandering psycho the original doesn't really apply here)
It's not that his gun can't hurt him, the silver shroud just has the ricochet perk
Hey man i used to keep up with all your video watching them all. The past few months i been feeling more and more down im sorry i missed so many but they do really help me
Manta Man may be unpopular, but I really like his outfit I got from the Atomic Shop. 10/10 would recommend.
Thank you for your content,it is both entertaining, enigmatic, and calming after a long day. Thank you
Also, the terror Doctor one might be an excellent reference where they go back in time, and 1 of the human beings is immune that absorbs power becomes a flying talking terror Doctor with an alter ego. As for this weird whole bunch of alien ones, I think that's reference. We're all the heroes and one of the loose comic books back in the day. Go to find the Hawk after sending them away. In this space and they have wacky little adventures where they run into other alien life forms and stuff.Which kind of helps but also hinders them because then they have to fight some of them but some of them actually help fight the others and it kind of just gets a little convoluted after that
This means you've never seen The Shadow movie from the 90's. Please go watch it, and The Phantom. Both are incredibly underrated superhero movies.
Judging by the pose of the Black Devil, he might still be inspired by Daredevil, mainly because of the horn like potrusions and because of the devil like theme to the character
I think K.D. Inkwell might be a reference to Dr Who.
I love that later Fallout games have introduced superheroes to the world with memorabilia and other dedicated fans. Even allowing players to embrace some of the more popular heroes like Shroud or Mistress!
I really hope they go further with this in the next installment, maybe a more fleshed out questline where the player gets to actually meet or discover a hero that’s been frozen or displaced and fight alongside their cause. Or uncover what happened to their teammates like the Unstoppables.
Basically a short story that actually proves that superheroes did exist to an extent in the past before the bombs dropped. Maybe fighting a battle of the Sino American War in secret. Or stopping a nuke that was secretly launched and destroyed before the Great War.
just wanted to say i dig your content, man! : )
I feel like jangles is the gift you give to the child of someone you hate.
You missed the Chrono-Cowboy, mentioned as a new release in FO3. I'll second the notion that The Green Hornet may be part of the inspiration for the Silver Shroud - suit n Fedora, butler, good at close quarters, even had a green gun at a time
I certainly get a Phantom Stranger (DC) vibe from the Shroud. Especially considering his metaphysical relationship with his gun. Cool video!
Sliver shroud was awesome on fallout 4
Doing the calls for that guy
Calling me like sliver shroud come in , can you hear me
Go to back alley in good neighbor.
So fun!
"Visit the Ux-Rom Galaxy" could be a reference to the ninja turtles fictional race, the utroms. There were brain things in jars on the cover, and urtoms look like little brains with tentacles.
Captain Cosmos always reminded me of a re-skin of Space Ghost. Aesthetically speaking.
I think Captain Cosmos is based on space ghost and his monkey. He sounds like a mix of the 60s show and coast to coast.
Also, the Mistress of Mystory might be based on moon knight.
Great Video idea!
I think La Fantoma was a skill magazine in New Vegas as well
The Mistress of Mysteries is like Croft and Batman had a kid.
I came to the comments for all "The Shadow" fans and I was not disappointed.
Also I think Maula: Maiden Of Mars might be a reference to Bethesda's own game The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and it's final boss a giant four armed red guy named Mehrunes Dagon
Ok, I hope this will get seen because I literally wrote down this by hand so I wouldn't forget. First, Silver Shroud may also, or actually, be a reference to The Shadow. It was a 90's movie featuring Alec Baldwin. Second, Captain Cosmos may also be pulling inspiration from Space Ghost. La Fantoma could also be pulling from The Phantom which was another 90's movie which stars Billy Zane. Sounds like the one right before that is taking at least some inspiration from Dr. Who. Last, Mantaman is probably also slightly influenced by Submariner. I'm surprised you didn't mention the connection between Robert Howard, the creator of Conan, and H.P. Lovecraft. Fallout has been influenced heavily by Lovecraft so it's not surprising to get Conan in the mix and probably explains why they travel to such a place since in the Conan comics he faces off against "Lovecraftian" monsters.
The Fo3 Grognak cover is based off the Barbarian class picture from Oblivion. The board game reminds me of Hero Quest.
The axe both in game and in the cover is clearly heavily based on Oblivion's Iron Battleaxe too.
Hey radking, i loved your "fallout set in ______" videos, like your fallout in detroit one. Was wondering if you had anymore planned in the future. Whatever the case may be, keep speading Adam's message.
Love these videos.
I know who knows some inspiration about the Civil shroud the shadow knows the shadow being a pope hero from the golden age of superheroes actually I think the shadow is more of an inspiration than Batman and the current construct cuz in itself Batman was inspired by parts of the Shadow if I'm remembering that correctly
I do believe that the Silver Shroud also has Inspiration from the Question who like Batman is both a Detective and a DC character
Evidence: Silver Shroud has face in a way that we actually don't see his full Face shown (Except for extra arts seen online)
The Question has been shown to actually NOT have a face
Except in Justice League Unlimited.
I love "The Commie-Kazis". Especially when you know that's based on real life.... errr, sortuh.
The US Military IRL tested to see if Dolphins could be used to deploy bombs and stuff. Really psychotic and interesting.
La Fantoma is a pretty obvious reference to Lee Falks The Phantom
The Shadow could also be an inspiration for the Silver Shroud, they look very similar scarf and outfit. The Shadow also had a catchphrase "The Shadow knows." there was a movie with Alec Baldwin during the 90's but he's a 40's hero.
u should do a video on all the radio dramas and pop culture of pre war america in fallout tbh i feel like theres alot there thats just generally overlooked
The Shroud takes inspiration from "Batman" (IE the butler) (Which is funny because The Shadow gave inspiration to the invention of Batman.) and a lot of the outfit (Trench coat, Red scarf and hat) and weapon (The Thompson) and his love interest (Margo Lane) comes from "The Shadow" radio show.
There was production of a TV series that lasted one season. (considering The Shroud was just about to begin it's TV debut.)
In the printed version of "The Shadow" his name is "Kent Allard", which Kent is the name of the guy that gives the quest chain.
If you look up the title card picture for the 1994 movie of "The Shadow" you'll see Alac Baldwin in the outfit with the red scarf covering his face.
Didnt realise i'd find these comic books so intresting, nice work Radking!
I think the second picture of the silver shroud was a poke at the comic illustrator Robert Liefelds outrageous art style, bulging anatomically inaccurate muscles and blocky frames covered in pouches and bandoliers wielding confusing weapons.
Regarding the Silver Shroud: he seems to draw at least some inspiration from Will Eisner's "The Spirit" who couldn't be hurt by his own weapons IIRC.
The Inspector and the Mistress of Mystery seem to also draw inspiration from Dr. Strange.
One of my favourite playthroughs of Fallout 4 I've ever done was my "Silver Shroud" playthrough using the FudgeMuppet build. I named the character "Robert West" after two Batman actors from the 40s and 60s, Robert Lowery and Adam West.
Starts with Silver Shroud
Fails to mention The Shadow, the closest parallel. Looks exactly like The Shadow.
For clarifications sake, the Thinker was actually a flash villain, getting his start over in his comics. He is a villain that has gotten around a bit due to the connected nature of the dc universe but he is a flash rogue
I forgot about La Fantoma. She’s cool!
Radking always coming in clutch with existing
If you have ever heard of true Vault escapades they have a couple good episodes with the superheroes of Fallout love your stuff though keep up the good work and have a Happy Thanksgiving my irradiated brother
The front of the t51 power armor could be based on the hull of the m48 mbt
I always saw the Silver Shroud as inspired by The Shadow. The fedora, trench coat, scarf, clouding people’s senses by using the shadows….The Shadow uses two silver pistols. The Shroud could have also used a Stealth Boy to hide himself like the Shadow does. Batman and the Shadow are actually pals too. I have some of the comics where they team up
I named an Orc character in Oblivion Grognak gro-Maul after the Fallout comic character. He turned out pretty good.
The unstoppables terodactol comic is a reference to marvels savage land comics.
Where Sauron a giant big terodactol man like creature rules the savage land.
Also the savage land itself is lost in time. Lots of dinodaurs in general.
