It was free. Those were military helicopters. The military was used fir security. The Russians didn’t know what to do with that kind of crowd ….. and in the beginning they beat allot of fans ….they were frightened by that energy. They had to stop the concert and talk to the military commanders and explain that this was normal behavior for a rock concert. And then they had to ask the crowd to calm down a bit or they would not be allowed to continue. There is a documentary on CZcams about the whole event. It’s well worth watching.

Where are those 1.6 Million Russians now? Even the Chinese show more resistance.

The number of attendance at this concert is a myth and grew over the years. This concert was held on september 28 1991 at Tushino Airfield in Moscow and was part of the Monsters of Rock festival that toured that summer in Europe. Don't forget that Russia still was a communist country on that day and was on it's last legs, a month prior this concert there was a failed coup attempt in the USSR and the people wanted a concert to celebrate the end of decades of supression by a communist regime. Yes a LOT of people came to this free concert but the 1.6 million attendance number is once again a myth because nobody knows, counting the attendance number of a free concert while your regime is dying isn't really a top priority if you ask me...

Fun Fact: In Nightwish - Greatest Show on Earth - Emppu is paying tribute to Metallica and included some seconds of Enter Sandman at the end of their song

The opening music is "Ecstasy of Gold" by Ennio Morricone, from the movie "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. I saw a comment somewhere "Hitler sent 150 divisions and failed. America sent four guys with long hair."

It was held at an airfield…..It was a concert with Pantera and AC/DC as well……a promise to the young people as part of glasnost……I’m sure most probably couldn’t hear much….but it was a “happening”……something to tell your children and grandchildren that you were there. An historic event.

it was on airfield "Tushino" (Tushino neiborhood). It was under "Monsters Of Rock" fest

It was a free concert (AC/DC and several other huge artists and groups played there as well). Just to clarify it for you... there was 1.6 Million in attendance over the course of the 3-day festival. It was called the Monsters of Rock Festival hosted by MTV (that's why it was free😉). The helicopters were there initially for security/crowd control. But they soon realized that the Helicopters were providing some MUCH-needed air circulation for the crowd.

as a moscovite and a metalhead I can say it was FIRST'n'LAST (Metallica's, Pantera's, AC/DC's) concert in the USSR (in december USSR was eliminated). BTW it was free (with no pay)
