- The Soundstorm Evolution (SSL) EV5000D recently sold on SonicElectronix for $119 shipped as a refurbished version. I could not help myself and decided I needed to buy one to test for the masses. How much wattage does this 5000W "Max" amp put out? Let's try and see how this budget amp performs...

BigDWiz will you test the Boss 3400 watt mono block class D amplifier I bought two of them and strapped them to 2 w3 500 watt JL 15's and am wondering if Im getting 1500 watt RMS to the speakers?
Have you ever tested the sound stream ar1.4500d
Hi love your videos but have a question about the difference between watts on amplifiers, if your testing in rms is there a difference between Pmpo( peak music power output) as when you look at stereos in a retail store they’ll say 50w rms then in brackets ( 200w pmpo) I’m no expert or claiming this to be right would just like to know what’s the difference if there is one and what’s the best make of amps on the market today? I used to have 2 directed 1100ds and 2 15” T. rex subs that’s 16 years ago now and finding something good in the uk is hard everything seems to be subs with built in amps , seems like car audio isn’t that popular anymore
Starting to Bing your videos and it's great to see my suspicions confirmed. Up until you, I was recently just getting only externally fuzed amplifiers of fear of cheap caps and internals not being up to par. This is no guarantee of an amp being better, but my thinking is that if they care to put external fuses for the longevity of an amp, then in a perfect world the fuses should be what saves your amp from frying if it we're to short or a million other bad situations that could occur in line after the main in line fuzed.
I started figuring they would rate these ideally to what the internal components could handle.
You need to do a dyno on the nemesis audio amp
Most useful channel on whole internet. Keep it going!
+Jevgenij S 👌😊🤙
It's been the only channel on CZcams I've watched consistently since the nation went on Coronavirus lockdown!
Maybe its 5000 watts at 24 volts
if they just marketed the amp as an 1800 Watt amp they'd prob sell more. man what I would have gave for 1800 Watts for a 120 bucks in the early 90's.
love to see the new lanzar opti amps dyno'd and the new Orion. kinda like you did with rf 25 to life amp. kinda side by side comparison.
+Daniel Deleuw I agree. Still shake my head, but the amps are cheap at a cost...of American jobs and negative impact to our economy 👎
Hard to make that purchase I bet knowing they are gonna fail on the dyno. Would make me want to not even bother with the "el cheap-o" line. But I do appreciate you getting it out there. Almost be cheaper to have followers send there amps in to u.
If u are taking requests on dyno's and seeing how like me u are a fosgate fan. Love to see you do a 4080ix or dsm. Is my favorite rf amp of all time. I have one sitting in my closet. Did my whole system back in the day. Ran two mbquart 6x9's in the door and 4 series one 10's behind the seat of my Chevy luv...
+Daniel Deleuw I do that on occasion, but have had a few blow up and that gets complicated 🤔
wow i know its not 5,000 watts , But 1,500 watts for $120 is NOT bad for Temporary Amplifier. Thanks for The Help and dyno results
yeah i was thinkin same thing...and it says max - never says 5krms anywhere(most boss, power acoustik, planet audio, etc all do about 1/3 of rated power) [if it says 5000max it = 1700ish on music / 2500rms = 800rms certified maybe over 50% on a good day...but obviously this amp still would never touch 5k even on 40volts lmao but still for a cheap everyday amp for music not bad for price. i mean hell a normal 1.5k is like 400 bucks
b1782w 😁👍
You know this, I know this, but what about the kid who is just getting into car audio and doesn't know this "rule". It's misleading and "Max" power should never be posted because it's a made up number
+Dereck BigDWiz i kno but thats how they make sales lol smh and i appreciate guys like u and steve meade for lettin us see whats real (wish there was youtube and ampdyno vids when i was a teen dangit) had to live and learn and heck like meade said about the crunch amp he dyno'd for 100 or 150 bucks if you're gettin 1000 plus rms the company shouldnt be ashamed to put that on the damn box...but they know half of the market is ignorant to the facts so again i say thank u
+Dereck BigDWiz true they need to just put the truth . thanks BigDwiz
love these tests. you have saved me an insane amount of money.
SOOOO glad you got that AMP Dyno! So great to see what my money buys and what to expect.
+Michael Rinkle 👍
Hey Dereck, thanks for taking the time to do these vids, I appreciate you and the others doing the dyno tests. I have been trying to get a few others to run a test on the Kenwood KAC-9106D with no luck so far. I feel it would be a good amp to test because 1. it is a name brand amp 2. it isn't low budget but it is a budget minded amp 3. it claims to put out 1000W RMS @2ohm which is right in the ballpark for many running a pair of 10's, budget 12's or a single nice 12. Thanks for any response.
I have the same amp ,interested!
I can't believe you tested that amp! certainly appreciate it and everyone that asked better appreciate it!
Thanks brother John.
Cool to see how it preforms. I have a EV4000 in my truck. I knew it would never make the claimed power but its cheep and has done well the last several years I've owned it.
I have the same 4k ssl and performs great the amp kick my VM Audio 15 4k max 2k RMS in half power amp this is ridiculous
Aweseome vid, I love it when you do budget amps.
+sleepyboytx I always keep you guys guessin'...sometimes old school amps, sometimes new amps, sometimes Chinese mini amps, lol. Gotta keep things interestin' round here
It's insane how more efficient it is at 4ohm vs. 2ohm!!!
Thanks for posting this always nice to see manufacturer claims getting more and more astronomical than before. I miss the days when amps were sold underrated instead of overrated.
+jason29821 right, that's what's cool about the Amp Dyno...we can know the "truth" now without guessing
this is why i digg your ch you test high end and low end amps and that's what's up keep doing your thang man
+masterblaster735 thanks bro! I enjoy testing all kinds of amps, don't want to get bogged down into any particular brand/style/etc. Keep it fresh yo!
You do great work Derek!
Thanks :-)
people underestimate how LOUD even 2000 watts max is when done correctly with a quality sub and box. i wouldve murdered kittens to have that kind of power in the early 90s when i got into car audio
You said it
ive got two alpine type R 12s (2nd gen 2010-2012) on a alpine first gen PDX 1.1000....and it doesnt have the noise floor issues
1000W rms on two 12s....in a 99 buick centurys big ass truck.......it SLAMS so fucking hard.
and yes, i said 99 buick century.....doesnt break, great ride, great MPG....just kinda looks...old
but, man.....ive broken shit in my car like busting out the rear deck behind the rear seat.....rattling bolts loose...
im going to get some sundown SA-12s and possibly a scv 4000.....run it at 2 ohms for 1000w to each sub
2x my current power
should be retarded loud...
Jeff Barton
Jeff Barton I know that's right box and specs is a big deal can put a good subwoofer in a one box fits all and and do 100+db's...lol i've had cheaper sub before in a spec/ proper box and blowed peoples minds just saying...lol
Never heard of Audio Art amps huh?
love the dyno videos, keep them coming!!
+ThisIsSolution will do! Need more storage, hard drives are filling up with video content...no worries, more Dyno vids are coming
They did a good job on the finish no matter what it actually puts out
That CAB amp you and Steve Meade tested was something else, the best example of getting more than you paid for. My concern with amps like this one and the CAB is of course the build quality and how long they would hold up over time.
Please do more of these.
+thebestofall007 I like to mix it up a bit..some new amps, some old amps, other stuff, etc.
Moral of the story still very good power for $120, 1700 watts is awesome for that. But newbies beware do the research look at the real RMS to match to your woofer
hey good videos man, its really cool to see true power tests... keep it up
+JR rivers thanks bud 🤙
that's why I love audiopipe cheap and alot of there series are underrated
Did better than I expected
YAY! DEREK WHATS POPPING? (Load resistors and power amp coupling capacitors , and maybe a FET or MOSFET or three). Another good video bud. Go heels!
The audio industry needs some serious consumer protection. They can print 5000w on a 1000w amp. Sad.
Even pioneer prints 1600w on like 50w amps, its pathetic. Im never buying an amp that hasnt been proven by multiple amp tests
I could just imagine how many systems out there are being underpowered and clipped
@@rickytrevino8281 honestly I only buy from brands that are known to put out rated or under rated power, like kicker rockford or alpine. Skar, sundown and all those Taiwan usually make mkre power then rated but are not the best in quality and reliability it's a hit or miss with them most of the time. If it's made In china it's usually over-rated and again even if it hits rated they are also hit or miss. If you're on a budget and just want something to bump in your car always buy an amp with external fuses so you can see for yourself the amount of amperage it can pull. Add the total fuse amperage then multiply that by 10 to get it's rough watt output capabilities.
@@MrDelsoleg11 Lol what thats dumb youre going to purposely buy underpowered amps? Every amp can have a external fuse you just add it when you upgrade the wiring, unless its like some like highschool kid buying kicker kits that doesnt know what hes doing
I have a Skar 2000.1D pushing 2300w RMS to 3 SA12s, that's been my daily for the past two years. I live in Texas and my cars air conditioning doesnt work, yet I run it at full tilt every day with no problems. Never even gone to protect mode before
The subs, the box, and the amp were only like 800-900 it was real cheap
@@rickytrevino8281 I clearly stated that skar and all the Taiwan brands are usually underated, but that they are sometimes a hit or miss thats it never said anything negative about them. And by external fuses I meant on the amp itself as in the blade type that go on the side of the amplifier not the power line fuses.
I dunno if it's just the camera angle but those black 3,300uF 80v electrolytics looked puffy as hell n' ready to pop.
Good job dude. I was born in 1981 so old school is more like when I was in school. us old guys knew how to do it right.I had an old Rockford fosgate 150×2 amp. it put out 500 watts bridged back in the day before China started making them.
And 500 watts was plenty of power for subs back then. I remember the HiFonics Zeus amp absolutely destroying four 15" subs back then. You didn't need 2000 watts per sub to get some really big sounds
Big D...I wish to spark mutual curiosity. I had an ESX 275.1 by Zed Audio, which doubled up crazy fast on output. Put that small miracle on that dyno, ...and I can guarantee a ton of views from my clients that can't believe what this amp does! We love this channel cuz old school was tough before all the over-digitized tech took over. Keep rocking the math for us!
+Chris Black hey man, I've tested one of these. I'll have to go back through my video archive and edit this and upload to YT. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks dawg . You the man!
would love to see some old school amplifier and receivers from the seventies and eighties like Sansui Marantz pioneer on the test bench keep up the good work one of my favorite channels on CZcams
+MrFARTSANDWICH I have plans to test more home amps/receivers and even pro amps in the future. Thanks for the comment and for watching, I really appreciate it
Thanks as always Big D for your efforts in these videos!!!! Always good to see stuff like this tested and "outed" in performance of the amp!!!! Excited to see what is on deck next from ya!!!
+MrCpsloco big thanks for watching, commenting and sharing with your friends
Thank you for doing that that help me save a lot of money appreciate what you been very helpful
I used to sell these amps and I was always truthful to my customers about them but these dudes out here used to argue me down they did all that power lol I couldn't do nothing but laugh but hey the customer is always right. I sold these back in the day for about $150 or so at my part time flea market shop because that's the quality but I'm so glad for that amp dyno and people like you that show what power is being put out on these types of Amps good job and keeping it real. Peace and much respect.
+JustEnufCustoms thanks bro
😄😄im very grateful for you doing this test ! I actually have this amp & I'm in the process of returning it bcuz it thumps like its having a seizure for no reason
That could be ur ground or stereo. I had a pioneer head unit that did the same. Switched it for a kenwood and the bumping stopped. Gains could be set too high also.
My buddy just gave me a 1k watt. So I had to search for amp testing on this brand. Thanks
wow! I almost bought this amp 6 months ago. thankfully I ended up getting a JBL amp instead. Thanks Bid D!
+Brian Miles I don't think anyone really expects 5kW from this amp, but I was very curious to see what it did do
thanks for the test .. if they re packaged this amp as a 1200d it would be looked at completely different.. back a few years ago the cheap amp to get was the lanzar vibe 1200d and it cost a tad more and did less watts than this one but was correctly labeled as a 1200 watt amp..the Soundstream TN1.1200D dynoed almost the same watts as this amp you tested but is labeled as a 1200 watt amp correctly.. its like 50 bucks more ..
I bought a Soundstream Rubicon Nano RN1.5000D for $220 and I'm sure it's not pushing anywhere near 5000 watts, it's rated at 2500 watts max at 1 ohm, but I can tell you that it slams my two Sundown SA-12s. Flexes my roof and shakes the exterior trim on my doors. LOVE the Sundowns, kinda like the Soundstream. It DOES have 6-30 amp fuses on it, and it rocks the 12s on 50% gain, so it does what I need it to do.
I actually have a pair of these and was expecting almost exactly what you ended up with. They aren't super special, but if you just need watts...
FYI, the $119 price is for the refurbs, these haven't been made in a few years. They used to be more like $200-250ish.
Thanks for testing this thing, I just saw a few pop up on eBay from Sonic Electronics for the same price and snagged one for my work truck. I spend all day in it and want music but I'm not dumping a bunch of cash. For the price it'll push my 10's easily and will most likely last for years. My nephew had the 3000 watt one pushing 2 Rockford P3 12's and he beat the piss out of it for 2 years before selling the car. his friend still has it and the amp never gave up.
You know what, back in 1987 i'd be really happy with this amp instead of my Audition amp. It was i think 2x 60 @ 4ohm. 1000w for 120$ wow i wished i had one of those back then.
this is great , love it . thanks
dam so many people hate this amp but forget where and how they started the basshead life we all started out cheap and learned i just like that its funny how some knock and some say nice to know but nobody said i was a cheap prick and wanted bass and for the people that might comment to this yes i know you want true power then its a 1$ per watt enjoy and love the videos Williston Audio Labs
You said it
Have you done a dyno test on a DD M2c in the past? That’s one I would like to see. Great vids man. Very informative. Thanks
Not yet. Lots of amps lest to test 😬
Wish you guys would really test the 8000D soundstream amp for $170+
1800 watts for $119.... not too bad. I like these budget amp tests!
Thanks man.
whats happens if you put 16 volts in it instead of 14 volts
Great job bro.
+wade hicks thanks as always
Man the 90's were the best for us old men and our car stereos. Lol
Ha ha!
I've had personal experience with that amp. They failed all the time due to lack of support on the board. The board would flex and the solder would break on the coil right in the middle. You can even see the repair on yours.
SSL gives you "when lightning strikes" power ratings but the power you actually get for the money is worth it.
love your Dyno vids, very informative 👍
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Really helpful video
+Khumbi Banda thanks for watching and commenting
I had a good friend put my system together for me . He blew 2 of these amps before we realized that the sub was bad . Also , didn't know that this thing doesn't have any fuses on the Amp itself aside from the external you showed .
Not bad for price Big D and nice video 👍
I still have this amp I think and will sell it cheap. Shipping might GOTEEM some, but LMK if you want it.
Thank u Big D!
👌😬👍
very true. I have a 1st generation Rubicon 1002, and 2 of the 1st generation kicker kx 1200.1(the black ones with the green boards.
My very first car amp was a Sanyo 135x135 watt amp on two jvc 6x9s.
I dunno if u saw my comment about doing this amp but BIG THANKS! I appreciate u taking the time to check this thing out.
+Xpert2021 thanks for the comment and for watching!
This is a great deal for this amp. Think of it using your response to the Boss 4k for $100 that did around 1,000 watts. This amp costs $20 more and you get 800 more watts. And it's strappable. This is a sleeper amplifier. I bought three of them just to play around with them, and yep they get hot, but they're solid. Haven't had one issue with any of them, and all three are refurbished.
Good point. My frustration is not the value per watt, but the deceitful ratings. It just confuses the consumer.
They really should make testing these amps the same way you do a standard like Williston audio lab certified ✅✔️
We all know that 5000W "max" never means 5000 on the dyno, not sure why anyone expected that from it. However RMS before clipping for $120??? That's a bargain if I ever saw one! May not last like other high end amps but power is power! I think they misprinted the RMS rating @4ohms too, probably was meant to say 1ohm.
Thank you
Thank You
If SSL would have rated it for 1500 watts @ 1ohm they would've had a budget winner. Actually a really good looking amp, lots of internal cooling space 😀😁😂
I just buy this amp... and she run real good
I have one of these pushing an old school punch hx2 and it hits hard
+Mike Harriger lotsa power for the $$
Have you dyno tested the 1500w ssl evolution amp? Id like to know what it's putting out as it's definately not 1200 rms
Seem like they lie just to make money thanks man I use your channel for a lot of help keep it going bud👍🏽
I had the 2000 watt ssl amp on 2 kicker with the yellow stiching and a port boxs and it hit hard ass hell and push them things like crazy and you could blow the window out that's how hard I was hitting
i got the new Planet Audio BB 4000.1 hits pretty good, im curious to see what it does...hopefully one day you can test one :)
@dereck BigDWiz i need an amp the only brands tht I really trust has been PUNCH, MTX, & ORION. but rght now I'm looking for a dependable amp, tht keeps cool and pushes 3x12's 750-900 wts RMS ( I'd like to get one amp to push all three) wht would you suggest?
id buy one and recap it, it still would be a steal.
THAT SUCKS HOW MANY COMPANIES DON'T SAY THE TRUTH ON THEIR RATINGS FOR AMPS. I never knew that until I started watching Big D's videos.
Not a badly made amp for the price. It uses no-name caps but that is the case with any product in this price range. The power rating may be over optimistic but still its a nice looking amp, and over 1200W. It doesn't come with a name you can brag to your friends about but if you can live with that I'm sure this amp will be more than enough to drive a couple 12's and even a 15.
I was thinking the same thing. It's not bad for what it is. They should just have rated it honestly. You can't beat the price if your on a budget. I've never really cared about a name so long as it does what it says it can do.
If you ever get the chance I'd like to see the hifonics x14 on the dyno. Simply because most of the hifonics are rated at max wattage, but the x14 series are rated at rms.
I love watching these videos so I can prove people wrong when they buy a so called 5k amp and think they are loud lol
I am planning on getting three Orion HCCA 12's. These cheap amps would actually probably be good if I buy 3 of them for the three 12's. One of these amps on each 12.
Hey watched a lot of your videos and was curious about your opinion I wanted to buy 2 hdx3 sound cubed 12s but was wondering what kind of amp to buy the rms is 1500 and Max at 4500 any suggestions?? Or should I just get the sound qubed 2250 amp??
That's a big amp, it must do rated power, Big D! As long as I can get my 8 gauge remote wire in there it will push my 15's hard...
I have the 4k ssl its a extreme banger best amp I have ever had. And im still using it I been using it for 2 years
First, I do have an advantage, lol
+Dereck BigDWiz if i where to send you a banda 2.5k could you do a vid
+Dereck BigDWiz also have a banda 7k
haha and I'm outta heeeerrrree
BigDWiz hi, can you test 1 amplifier BOSS chaos epic ce4800d please!!
Do a video to test an audio pipe apmn-1300 1000 watts amp Please 👍👍
Derek just wondering if on some of your amp tests you might also measure damping factor and frequency response of the amp also a subjective listening evaluation would be helpful any thoughts ?
+George Empfield those additional tests would be nice, but I don't currently have the tools for capturing those additional measurements. I'm not a big fan of subjective tests, but I am thinking of additional methods as output wattage does not tell the entire story of an amplifier. Thanks for the comment 👍
I had one of these, but the EV4000 version (got it for $40) on a single 10 inch sub (vids on channel) and it did great. Surprised me. Just dont go crazy with it if anyone is thinking of buying these amps. I used 8 gauge ofc wire on the 4000 version.
That's a steal. Can't beat it for $40
Dereck BigDWiz
Most definitely
So this means my 3000 watt and my friends' 5000 watt SSL EVO isnt getting anything close to our ratings, I knew it but for the money being funny at times its an upgrade... Thank you for your videos...
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I can't hate on it, I run 1 of these wired at 1 ohm pushing 2 Kicker Solo Baric L7 12s and I'm doing 140s on stock electrical and it is possible to connect 0 gauge wire to it because I did. Fun to be able to say for 520 dollars I am hitting 140s with no electrical upgrades. The rms power is enough for the Solo Barics to compete with. all in all its a great budget build amplifier to me.
+Caleb Squires if you connected 0ga wire to this amp then you either had an adapter or cut a lot of the strands 😱. These amps have 4ga input terminals and they are slightly undersized as the Stinger 0ga/4ga adapters would not fit inside the terminals.
Dereck BigDWiz all I did was twist my wire as much as possible, I believe my 0 gauge wire is slightly smaller than normal, because of it being just no brand cable
Hey man, could you do the soundstream rubicon line amps. There old rubicon line was pretty damn good for the money. Curious about the new version of the rubicon line
500w rms @ 4 ohms $120 not bad at all. i wonder what the 1500.1 ssl does $59....150w @ 4 ohms?
I bough two of those SSL amps one 5000 watt for my bass and one four channel yeah i know they are cheap but until i can get enough money to replace them they will have to do , thanks man for this I do wish I didn't buy them after watching this but i already did so i'll live with it , which amp do you recommend for two 500 watt rms 10 inch skar audio dvc 2ohm subs
Thanks for testing amps in ways that most of us can't. I hope u know we appreciate it. How come u don't test JL audio amps? Haven't seen a dyno anywhere for the jlslash1200v3. Would like to know wat i paid for, I do love the amp but would like to know if it truly deservs it. Lol.
can you please help me I want to use a car amp in the house I need a cheap amp like this that will do to channels at 4ohm for both channels with at least 500 w rms per channel thank you so much
hey ive got rockford t8002. how much will she put out.. i cn smds t8004 is it the same?
I was waiting for Dick Riculous to make an appearance. Great video as always!
This may have been before he started making appearances in the channel
Williston Audio Labs Ya, I didn’t notice this was an older video until after I posted. It popped up on my recommended videos and I was happy there was a new one to watch. Thanks again for making these!
nice video, I was Just looking at these amps for a budget build and you helped me to decide. great channel and keep these videos going.
+mike waters thanks for watching and commenting
you did mention it had no voltage rating..if you could give it more voltage ..maybe it smokes mabe it gets close to 5k prob gonna need lots of volts quick dynamic burst
+Bassknots yeah, I think they got 5k "WLS" (when lightning strikes) 😜
I can tell you one thing about SSL amps their rms power might not be right on the dyno, but they still give you alot of wattage for the price. Iv own a ssl amp before and trust me it was pushing a 1000 watt rms 15" like nothing.
This is true
Had the 2000 watts version for years and now I finally understand why it never met my expectations in terms of loudness.. Very helpful video, thanks!
I really wish you would do the ssl 4000.1d I have two of them and they are the best thing I have ordered from e bay and lasted so long pleas do the 4000.1d
I also have the 4k it hits to hard tbh
I have 2 kickers cvrs 12 at 1 ohm each the speakers play for like 30 sec then distors and stops playing do you think im clipping the amp? I have a 3000 SSL Amp mono
Kickers wasnt ever good 😐 just my opinion. But did you figure out the issue? I have the ssl 4k mono never had that issue
what is the best amp for under 200$ that you've seen? i need about 1000 rms
hey big D can ya do some hifonics brx1516 and the x 14 line I got the brx1516 1500 rms but I feel it comes up short! by about 300watts did 2 ohm and says 900rms then did my 600rms alpine and sounded exactly the same.
