@EXPAT American Joseph, how would you feel about the idea of doing reviews/reactions to Soviet/Russian movies? I don't think you will have to do such vlogs on a strictly regular basis, though, I personally wouldn't mind. I don't necessarily mean the purely entertaining side of such reviews and the jolly spirit that generally stemms from the observation of comedies. I mean, the Soviet movies, particularly dramas, are specifically rich with meanings and are known for the moral choice topics. I'd recommend you watch "We, the undersigned" (1981) - "Мы, нижеподписавшиеся". What does Svetlana think about it?

A Protestant from America was visiting our parish. On the last day, she said, "My church is a Bible study circle. It was only with you that I realized and experienced that the Church is about direct communication with God, that you can directly stand in front of icons, look at Him and talk to Him." So Joe, we're waiting for you. Just sincerely ask the Lord to guide you and discover where the true Church is. He will certainly guide you in some way.

Learning the differences between the Orthodoxy and Protestantism is interesting. In this video, it feels kind of rushed. But it's nice to see Fr. Joseph and his neighbours. They look very happy
This video is absolutely rushed. They are all rushed since I do about 2 a week. We just scratched the surface and if we get enough views we can dive deeper. Unfortunately this video isn’t getting many views yet. Maybe more people will share it or maybe the subscribers do not want that many religious episodes. You know the one before this one is part one.

Hello, my dear friend! This is definitely one of the best of your videos I have watched so far. Fr. Josef is really smart person to explain what Orthodox Christianity is in very simple words and just in a nutshell. I know many Americans practicing Orthodox Christianity, because I lived in Maryland and Virginia for about 10 years? and I got baptised in Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. John The Baptist in Washington, DC. The Cathedral always have two services: in English for American people and in Church Slavonic for Russian people immigrated to US. So, I knew personally many American parishioners of this particular Church. Rather then that, it is one famous American, who was born as a protestant, but found his faith not satisfactory and started to learn various spiritual practices, including Buddism, Islam and so on. Finally he went to the conclusion that Orthodox Christianity is just what does he really need and became Orthodox priest and later the monk. And you know what? He is known in Orthodox Church as Fr. Seraphim Rose. He even wrote several services, for example? Canon and Akathist to St. John of Shanhai and St-Francisco, one of the most valuable saints of 20th Century.

@@expatamerican3234 One of my favorite moments in an Orthodox service is during our easter (Pascha) service, in my church we will shout out "Christ is Risen!" in as many languages as people know. I have heard English, Russian, Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Italian, Serbian, Romanian, Hebrew, German, Latin, Coptic, Swahili!

Russians honor traditions, people's moral beliefs are based on conscience and respect. The moral beliefs of Russians do not arise from religious faith.
There are 100 million Russians living in Russia. The Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church, through the communication of people with the Holy fathers, recognizes that one million Russian citizens are Orthodox Christians who study and strictly observe the strict rules of self-control of Orthodoxy.
Most Russians are not interested in religion. Russians believe in justice and self-sacrifice.

to be an Orthodox priest, you need to study for 7 years in a religious school. There are many exams to pass - in history, philosophy, psychology, the history of all Christian churches. Now you understand that in 7 years the priest must become very smart and knowledgeable and he must decide for himself whether he needs this path

I have two disabled sons, so it is not an easy task but I am praying about it daily. My older son is finishing his BS degree in CS at a Christian University and plans to get his master's degree in CS online from the University of West Florida. We are in MN. I left Russia when I was 26, was born and raised in Moscow.

I am Russian, I was baptized in infancy in the Orthodox Church. But according to my views on religion, I am more of an agnostic than an Orthodox person. My husband is an Assyrian by nationality, his family lives in Dagestan in the city of Makhachkala, there are also relatives in Georgia. Assyrians are the oldest people who were the first to adopt Christianity. In 2018, my husband and I went to visit his relatives in the village of Kanda in Georgia. There is an Orthodox monastery named after the thirteen Assyrian fathers. There is a temple in this monastery, where divine services are held in Aramaic (the language spoken by Jesus Christ). I was lucky enough to attend such a service. After the service, tears involuntarily flowed down my cheeks from the emotions that overwhelmed my soul. You should definitely visit this place.

Интересный экскурс. Батюшка верно подметил, православие по тому и называется - ордодоксия, что старается следовать именно изначальным традициям. Вы и сами знаете, что в западных церквях на столько заигрались с модерном, что даже гомосексуализм больше не является грехом. По этому, Россия - то место, где верующие христиане могут чувствовать себя частью истинной(изначальной, ортодоксальной) веры.
К счастью, не во всех западных церквях. По крайней мере, пока.

Great interview! I was Baptist until I was about 28, joined a church where I was eventually ordained, then was baptized into the Orthodox Church when I was 58. Studying Orthodoxy paralleled studying the Russian language (slow progress) and Russian history.

For those who suffer from peace of mind, there are excursions around the "Golden Ring" of Russia. In each of the city excursions there will be an opportunity to visit dozens of churches and monasteries. If you find an interpreter, you can discuss theological issues with the priests (this is easy to do online). It's not ideal for understanding Provoslavia, but it's an ideal first step. And welcome to Russia)
You should definitely come and see / experience for yourself.
Well actually there's a sprawling network of pilgrim houses throughout Russian monasteries and large churches, but you have to be an actual pilgrim on a pilgrimage to be part of it I guess. Meaning waking to a morning service at 5am or smth., don't know the details. Ask around the Orthodox communities.

I think these are important questions for sure and one thing lead to another. Copernicus questioned our place in the universe. Darwin questioned our place among the other creatures on the earth, Freud questioned our God-like mind and soul. And before these scholasticism of the Frankish/Papal church said we speculate on these topics instead of relying on revelation

Father Joseph is in the process of the translation of a major work on science, creation, evolution, etc., written by a Russian scholar who is uniquely suited to address these issues, and from an Orthodox perspective, as i understand.

Interesting idea. I guess if more people move there then there will be more infrastructure and resources. We had to stop filming but Max is absolutely fine. He forgot soon after. Kristoff said the bat was just too heavy for him to hold.

Why would we ignore people that have been told a lie? 1000's of years ago God told us about "rivers in the sea", we call them currents. But science didn't discover this till the 1700"s. I like science, I'm not against science. But Peter wrote about denial of a 7 day creation and the flood of Noah's time,, that there would be scoffers.

Отец Джозеф приводит хороший и убедительный аргумент. Протестантизм возник только в 16 веке. А что же происходило в предыдущие 1500 лет? В православной церкви важную (возможно, важнейшую) роль играет преемственность священства. То есть, в Книге Деяний святых апостолов (Новый Завет) автор книги апостол Лука пишет о том, что ученики Христа (апостолы), когда проповедовали и основывали общины (церкви), то во главе этих общин сами выбирали главного - епископа - которому и передавали власть совершать таинства и управлять общиной. Они передавали эту власть при помощи наложения своих рук на голову выбранного ими человека, и он становился епископом, а в последующем епископы налагали руки на головы выбранных ими людей, и те становились священниками, то есть получали право тоже совершать определенные таинства (это было необходимо потому что общины росли, людей становилось больше, и епископ физически не мог управиться со всеми делами, ему необходимы были помощники). И передача этой преемственности сохраняется уже 2000 лет, поэтому сегодня если вы возьмете какого-либо православного епископа, то он него вы сможете построить цепочку передачи власти вплоть до апостолов, а апостолам эту власть дал Сам Иисус Христос, о чем написано прямо в Евангелии от Иоанна, когда Иисус говорит Своим ученикам: "Кому простите грехи, тому простятся; на ком оставите, на том останутся" (Ин 20: 23). В протестантской церкви такой преемственности передачи власти от апостолов в принципе не существует, а ведь это ключевой момент. Да и в целом, в протестантизме нет исповеди и Причастия. Если, по мнению протестантов, исповедь не нужна, то тогда зачем Иисус Христос обращается к Своим ученикам с приведенными выше словами: "Кому простите грехи, тому простятся; на ком оставите, на том останутся" (Ин 20: 23)? Это только такие отличия, которые видны сразу, а если разбираться подробно, то отличий много, но суть-то одна - что ближе к учению самих апостолов, учеников Христа, которых Он послал проповедовать всем народам, то и истинно, а что далеко от учения апостолов, то не содержит истины, а основано на мнениях, суждениях, фантазиях, выдумках различных исторических личностей, живших в разные эпохи (и живущих сейчас, если говорить о современных христианских сектах).
@@lindaphillips4646 Исповедь в православии, конечно, подразумевает совсем другое. В православии на исповеди грехи прощает Сам Бог, а священник является только свидетелем, который свидетельствует о том, что грехи прощены (читает специальную молитву). Я когда-то читал отрывок из речи православного священника, отца Александра Шмемана, в котором он рассказывает случай из своего детства, на примере которого объясняет зачем нужна исповедь. Он рассказывал это детям, которые в первый раз готовились к исповеди. Вот этот отрывок:
«Когда я был маленьким, у меня был товарищ, с которым мы играли вместе почти каждый день. Самая наша любимая игра была в солдатики. У нас была целая армия оловянных солдатиков, палатки, автомобильчики, танки, пушки. Часами мы расставляли их, строили мосты и дороги, передвигали наши войска.
Однажды мне подарили маленькую пушку для моего войска. Из нее можно было стрелять, и она была замечательно тонко сделана во всех подробностях. Пушка эта мне так понравилась, что я ею все время хвастался и выцарапал на ней особый знак на подставке. Товарищу моему она тоже очень нравилась. Мы весело играли вместе, но когда стали убирать наши войска - пушечки не было. Я очень расстроился, всюду искал, всех спрашивал, но пушка исчезла.
Когда через два дня мы опять играли вместе, я вдруг увидел пушку в армии моего товарища. Я глазам своим не поверил.
-Это моя пушка! - сказал я.
-Нет, моя, - ответил мой друг. - Мне тоже такую подарили.
Я ничего не мог сказать. Я видел на пушке выцарапанный мною знак. Я знал, что это моя пушка.
Мой друг молчал. Он знал, что я знал.
Я тоже знал, что он знает, что я знаю.
Нам обоим вдруг стало скучно. Мы не знали, как играть вместе. На следующий день мой товарищ не пришел. Не приходил он и еще два или три дня. Вдруг он пришел опять. Он прямо посмотрел мне в глаза и сказал: «Прости меня. Это я взял твою пушку. Возьми ее!»
«Да не нужно мне пушки! Пусть она будет общая! Будем вместе играть!» - закричал я. Я был так счастлив, у меня было так хорошо на душе, как будто холодный твердый комок у меня в сердце растаял. Стало весело, как на Пасхе.
Вот я и думаю. Говорят иногда: «Зачем надо называть свои грехи на исповеди? Я ведь каюсь, мне жаль, что я плохое сделал, да зачем же говорить?» Нет, недостаточно знать, что ты поступил плохо, недостаточно знать, что Бог знает, что ты сделал плохое и что ты каешься. Нет, надо сказать, надо по имени назвать то плохое, что в тебе. И это мы делаем, когда исповедуемся». Конец рассказа.
Что касается крещения младенцев, то тут можно сказать, что уже во времена проповеди апостолов Иисуса Христа, когда они приходили и проповедовали в Риме, там крестились целыми семьями вместе с детьми. Можно говорить о том, что и младенцы тоже были в этих семьях и их тоже крестили.
Что касается Причастия, то Иисус Христос на Тайной вечери прямо говорит о том, что хлеб это Его Тело и вино это Его Кровь. "И когда они ели, Иисус взял хлеб и, благословив, преломил и, раздавая ученикам, сказал: приимите, ядите: сие есть Тело Мое. I don't know if you know or not, you're the first one to do this research. At least on CZcams and at the same time between two Americans. That is, the first study was done by Joseph from Florida. This is an incredible discovery made by you.
The second thing I would like to say is Orthodoxy, unlike many other Christian denominations (for example, the Roman Catholic faith in Latin America), spread without pressure, absolutely voluntarily, and according to the good will of someone who wanted to accept the Orthodox faith.
All this was done with respect to other religions, and therefore Muslims in the Caucasus remained Muslims, Buddhists in Kalmykia, Tyva and Buryatia remained Buddhists, and Hebrews in all parts of Russia remained Hebrews. Such a respectful attitude towards other religions, nations and ethnic groups has created such a huge country.
You can feel this respect while living in Russia, being an American Protestant.

Good question. At my church you get baptized as an adult. We would like to do more videos and get more specific in our questioning if enough people watch these videos. Share them ;)
Yes, but it's not as formalized as RCIA. It is called becoming a "catechumen". You just take classes from an Orthodox Priest, and learn the teachings of the Church. Then you enter the Church via baptism. - In OT times, an adult could become a part of God's People by confessing belief in Israel's God, and receiving the rite of initiation (circumcision). Later, all his future children and grandchildren would be received into Israel in infancy, via circumcision. - In NT times, an adult can become a part of the Orthodox Church by becoming a catechumen, learning the teachings of the Christian Faith, and getting baptized. Later, all his future children and grandchildren are received into the Orthodox Church in infancy, via baptism.

To argue for a young Earth does a great disservice to the faith. Absolute biblical literalism is a disaster in the modern era. That's not to say it is wise to give ground where none needs given, as there is nothing to be gained. I admire the doctrinal resilience of the Orthodox Church, it has withstood all of the assaults the world can throw at it, but on this it is plainly wrong. Such data points are utterly meaningless, when one considers the timelessness of what is being defended. Just my thoughts, for what they are worth.
I think it is a scientific argument and so it is by design a trap set by atheists to trip up Christians but I also prefer not to argue with people who also believe in Jesus. My focus is on helping agnostic people understand.

I dont think the bible should be taken literally, as it was written historically. Its the main ideas and concepts that matter. Like St Paul wrote about Jesus after the fact, most accounts were true, however much would have been exaggerated over time.

он хотел уехать из США потому что ему не нравилось давление на семейные ценности там. Он выбирал между странами где есть образование на дому (его дети учатся так) и православие. Круг стран был небольшим и с учетом образования на дому фактически остался только выбор с Россией.

Father didn't say that the Russian church was the oldest he said Orthodox church. That includes all the churches in Jerusalem Antiohia Alexandria etc. But Orthodoxy was formed through great struggle with heretic teachings on the nature of Christ on Holy Trinity etc. First ecumenical council is very important but the others also. Church has 2000 years history
